Chapter 59

The Mist of Noctaris

The expedition left the capital before sunrise.

Twenty of the kingdom's finest warriors rode behind King Kael and Queen Lyra. The streets were lined with people despite the early hour. Human children waved beside wolf pups, cheering as the royal procession passed.

No drums were played.

No victory banners flew.

This was not a celebration.

It was the beginning of another uncertain journey.

Kael looked back one last time at the palace.

From the highest tower, a nurse stood holding baby Lucian. Though too young to understand, the child watched his parents leave without crying.

Kael silently promised, I will return.

Then he turned his horse north.

For five days, the journey was peaceful.

They crossed green valleys where farmers worked side by side with wolf clans. Villages welcomed them with warm meals and hopeful smiles.

But as they traveled farther north, the land slowly changed.

The trees grew twisted and leafless.

Birdsong disappeared.

The rivers became unnaturally still, reflecting the sky like polished glass.

Even the horses became restless.

On the evening of the sixth day, Captain Rowan halted the column.

"Your Majesty."

Kael rode forward.

"What is it?"

Rowan pointed ahead.

A thick silver mist stretched across the mountain pass.

It rose from the ground like a living wall, hiding everything beyond it.

Marcus frowned.

"Our maps show a road here."

"There should be a valley."

"There is," Selene said quietly.

"You simply can't see it."

She climbed down from her horse and approached the mist.

As she raised one hand, faint silver runes appeared within the fog before fading again.

"This barrier is ancient."

"Older than the Moon Kingdom itself."

Lyra stepped beside her.

"Can we break it?"

Selene shook her head.

"No."

"It isn't meant to be broken."

"It decides who may enter."

That night, they made camp a short distance from the mist.

No one slept well.

The silence was unsettling.

There were no insects.

No wolves howling.

No wind through the trees.

Only the quiet hum of ancient magic.

Near midnight, Kael awoke to the sound of footsteps.

He reached for his sword.

A small figure stood just beyond the firelight.

It was a little girl wearing a white dress.

She couldn't have been older than eight.

Her long black hair covered most of her face.

"Are you lost?" Kael asked gently.

The girl didn't answer.

Instead, she pointed toward the mist.

Then she turned and walked into it.

Kael followed without thinking.

"Your Majesty!" Rowan called as he noticed Kael leaving the camp.

Within seconds, Lyra, Selene, and the others rushed after him.

The moment Kael stepped into the silver mist, the world around him disappeared.

He found himself standing in a vast field beneath a black sky.

There were no stars.

Only a crimson moon hanging overhead.

The little girl stood several yards away.

When she finally looked up, Kael froze.

Her eyes were completely silver.

"Who are you?" he asked.

She smiled sadly.

"I've been waiting."

"For me?"

"No."

"For the last king."

Kael frowned.

"I don't understand."

The girl slowly raised her hand.

The field vanished.

Now Kael stood in the middle of an enormous battlefield.

Thousands of warriors lay dead.

Broken banners fluttered in the wind.

At the center of the carnage stood a man wearing black armor trimmed with crimson.

His face was hidden beneath a crown of shadows.

He held a sword unlike any Kael had ever seen—a blade forged entirely from black crystal.

"The First Shadow King," the girl whispered.

"He was once a hero."

Kael stared in disbelief.

"What happened to him?"

"He tried to defeat death."

"And death defeated him."

The armored king turned as though sensing Kael's presence.

Even across the battlefield, Kael felt the crushing weight of the stranger's gaze.

Then everything shattered like broken glass.

Kael gasped as he stumbled back into reality.

He was standing at the edge of the mist once again.

Lyra grabbed his arm.

"What happened?"

"You were gone only a few seconds."

Kael looked around in confusion.

"It felt like hours."

He described everything he had seen.

When he mentioned the little girl, Selene's expression changed.

"There are stories..."

"Of the Guardian of the Mist."

"They say she appears only to those destined to enter Noctaris."

Marcus frowned.

"So... does that mean we can cross?"

Before Selene could answer, the silver mist began to move.

Slowly, silently, it parted down the middle.

A stone road appeared where none had existed before.

Ancient pillars lined both sides of the path.

Each was carved with wolves on one side...

And humans on the other.

Kael stepped forward cautiously.

"The kingdom wasn't built by enemies," he murmured.

"It was built by allies."

Selene nodded slowly.

"I think we've misunderstood history."

Far beyond the opened path, high upon the black walls of Noctaris, the hooded ruler watched through a crystal mirror.

He had seen everything.

The little girl entered the chamber and knelt before him.

"They have crossed the first gate."

The ruler smiled beneath his hood.

"Good."

His voice echoed through the silent throne room.

"The son of Alaric walks exactly where fate intended."

One of his generals stepped forward.

"Shall I prepare the army?"

"No."

The ruler rose from his throne.

For the first time, he removed his hood.

A long scar crossed his face, and one eye glowed with crimson light while the other remained a piercing blue.

He looked almost... human.

"Not yet."

"I want to meet King Kael."

"Face to face."

Outside the towering black castle, the great gates of Noctaris slowly began to open.

Beyond them waited a city that had been hidden from the world for thousands of years—and secrets powerful enough to change everything Kael believed about the origins of humans, wolves, and the Shadow Devourer.
