Chapter 2

Author: Little Joy
Dustin shook his head. Frowning, he asked me, "Does your…husband…already know about this?"

I lowered my head and didn't answer him.

Dustin held me by my shoulders and said, "You should tell him about it! I think that he loves you very much. He won't let you abandon yourself to choose the baby!"

When I heard this, I suddenly burst into tears in the clinic and wailed like I was possessed. I didn't even know how I managed to leave the hospital afterward because I was in such a daze the entire time.

While walking past the town hall, I suddenly stopped and thought about the fate of my baby. I sat at the steps for a long, long time.

If Aaron didn't love me anymore, would he still treat the baby with love if it was born?

If he really married Candace, surely she wouldn't be a good stepmother to my baby with how wicked a person she was!

However, if I were to abort this baby, I realized that I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I didn't have any memories of my parents. Aaron had always been the one by my side ever since I could remember. But now, Aaron wasn't mine anymore. That meant that this baby was the only person I had left.

I remained at the town hall for a long time, spending nearly the entire day there on the steps. I didn't even realize that it had gotten dark out.

When Aaron called me, I realized then that it was already 1:00 am.

He asked me impatiently, "Where are you? Why aren't you home yet?"

I clutched at my thin coat and said, "I'm at the town hall entrance."

Ten minutes later, Aaron appeared before me on his scooter. When he saw that I still wasn't moving, he came up to me and yanked me up from the steps. He pointed a finger at me like he wanted to yell at me, but thought better of it and suppressed his anger instead.

He took off his coat and put it around my body. Then, he turned around and lit a cigarette.

I took the hint and climbed onto the back of the scooter. We never said a word to each other on the way back.

After reaching home, I stroked my belly and asked him awkwardly, "Aaron, who do you love? Me, or Candace?"

He spun around to stare at me.

"What about you? Viola Goodwin, who do you love? Dustin, or me?"

"You, of course!" I replied without any hesitation.

He raised his hand to wipe away the tears I didn't even know I was crying. He laughed self-deprecatingly as he said, "You're a liar, Viola."

Obviously, he didn't believe me.

"If I didn't love you, Viola, would you even have made it until today? Did you agree to my proposal because you loved me, or because you felt guilty?"

I was just about to answer him when we were rudely interrupted by the shrill sound of his phone ringtone.

"Ronnie? It looks like there's going to be a thunderstorm. I'm afraid to be alone. Also, you didn't use a condom the other day, so we're going to have to find out in half a month. Who knows? Maybe you're going to be a father real soon."

Candace's sickly sweet voice floated right into my ears from his phone.

Aaron just glanced at me before looking away and cursing out loud. Then, he grabbed a coat and rushed toward the front door.

I called out to him.

"I won't let you go to her, Aaron."

He paused, but only slightly.

I pressed, "I said you're not allowed to go see her!"

Seconds later, he still turned his back on me and left.

I crouched on the couch. My gaze landed on the framed photo on the table. In it, I was wearing my graduation gown and happily posing with Aaron, who was wearing his food-delivery gear. He was also smiling widely and proudly at the camera.

Back then, we believed that we had a beautiful future together. We even shouted, "Till death do us part!"

I turned my head away so I wouldn't have to see the photo again. Instead, I lay down on the couch and tried to force myself to sleep so I could stop thinking about it.

However, the moment I closed my eyes, Aaron's voice appeared in my head again.

"If I didn't love you, would you even have made it until today?"

His voice wouldn't stop echoing in my head, and I began agreeing with him. He was right. I had him to thank for letting me stay alive until now. I had to thank him for holding me back then and telling me to bet on my recovery at the hospital.

Aaron barely came home to the apartment for the next two weeks after that.

However, I received some good news in his absence. I'd managed to get some of my written work published, and the hefty royalties might just give me a second chance at life.

Hidden inside the box was the bank card that Aaron had given me, containing the 180,000 dollars in it. The other card was mine, containing all of the copyright fees and royalties from my written work. There was also a letter addressed to him. That was the backup plan that I had prepared for my baby.Aaron slowly opened the envelope and began reading."Hi, Aaron. If you're reading this letter, it means that I'm most likely not around anymore. But I just wanted to explain myself to you."I never betrayed you ever, ever since the beginning of our relationship."I guess I'd have already given birth to my baby by now, but I unfortunately didn't make it in the end. I can't stop worrying about the baby. That's why I'm writing this letter to you."Please take good care of the baby until they've grown up. You're a very good and kind person, and I feel at ease leaving my baby to you."But Candace isn't a good person. If you manage to bring our baby home, please, please always keep our ba

"I hate Viola," Candace said. "I hate her pretentious attitude. She's dirt poor, and yet, she still acted so arrogantly and refused to accept handouts and charity. She kept saying random bullshit like 'poverty doesn't diminish ambition' or something. It's hilarious."As for why I targeted you in the first place? Well, I wanted to see if the supposedly unbreakable and unwavering love she always talked about in college really existed."Aaron's chest heaved violently. He was so agitated that he wanted to rush forward and tear Candace apart with his hands."You murderer! You destroyed her! You completely destroyed her!"Candace screamed and staggered backward. As a result, Aaron was detained for a couple more days.I looked at the dejected Aaron with a million thoughts running through my head. I should be happy that his marriage had broken up, but I couldn't bring myself to laugh.During the days he was detained, Aaron kept staring at the CCTV camera above him. The moment he was rel

Aaron slowly stopped struggling. He raised his head, looking up as he grabbed Dustin's trouser leg."That's impossible! Viola was still fine when I left her! How could she possibly be dead?"He refused to believe anything Dustin told him and continued clinging to his pant leg. "I've already allowed her to get together with you! There's no need for you to continue hiding her from me like this."Dustin crouched down and grabbed Aaron by the collar."Too late. Maybe if you allowed it five years ago, she would never have had to die so young!"Then, he puffed out his cheeks, kicked Aaron away, and strode back into his clinic.Aaron lay on the ground, covering his face as he sobbed, "No… There was so much blood by the table… Did it hurt, Viola?"After he was done crying, he staggered toward the information desk in the main lobby and asked the staff for a copy of my medical records. Instead, the nurse told him that I had died two days ago, and gave him a copy of my death certificate in

"Dustin Krause? Shut the fuck up!" Aaron yelled into the phone. "Where's Viola? Let her speak on the phone! What, she's asking you to come and crash my wedding now?"I'm telling you, I am marrying Candace by hook or by crook, and nothing is ever going to change that! It won't matter even if you crash it!"Dustin sighed before flinging the phone from his tight grip onto the floor below. Then, he dragged his feet heavily back into the morgue. He crouched over my frozen body, smiling bitterly to himself."No wonder that clingy guy never came to the hospital with you after all… Didn't I tell you that he was an unreliable good-for-nothing five years ago? "What do you think would have changed if only I'd— Whatever. There's no going back or changing anything anyway."He turned and held my cold hand. His hot tears splashed down onto the back of my hand."How could you have lived such a miserable life for so long, Viola…"I floated in the air, patting him on his shoulder from afar.I n

Aaron then threw my bag out the door. He'd barely even left when Candace suddenly ran out after me, grabbing me by my arm at the stairs. She grinned sweetly at me. Her tone was gentle, as though she were coaxing a little child."Come on, Viola, won't you please stay? It's only for three months. I promise that I won't bother you anymore after the wedding."I didn't even spare her a glance and shook her hand off, trying to leave. However, she came even closer to me and spoke directly into my ear."Wasn't that prenatal education book really interesting? Say, what do you think is going to happen if I shoved you down the stairs right now? It wouldn't have to be a hard one. Just a little push… What if someone died?"And if you left now, who's to say that an accident wouldn't happen to you while you were out?"I gasped and felt the hairs on the back of my neck rising. I immediately spun around and grabbed her by her neck.My hands trembled. "You wouldn't dare!"She grabbed at my hands

The next time I saw Aaron again was at the hospital. By sheer coincidence, we ended up taking the same elevator together. However, he was accompanying Candace to the obstetrics and gynecology department. Before getting out of the elevator, he stole a glance at the medical examination report in my hands but didn't say anything. It wasn't until I reached the examination room that I finally got a text message from him."Did anything go wrong during the physical exam? Or are you just feeling unwell?"I didn't reply to him, and he transferred another 1,000 dollars to me.I read the notification from my bank app and didn't say a thing, heading straight toward the clinic instead.I asked Dustin, "If I'm still alive and kicking after giving birth to the baby, is there any possibility of curing this cancer?"He carefully looked at my examination report, took a deep breath, and said, "Viola… I hope that you can become that miracle."My nose tingled with emotion. I nearly burst out crying
