Chapter 3

Author: Little Joy
The next time I saw Aaron again was at the hospital. By sheer coincidence, we ended up taking the same elevator together. However, he was accompanying Candace to the obstetrics and gynecology department.

Before getting out of the elevator, he stole a glance at the medical examination report in my hands but didn't say anything.

It wasn't until I reached the examination room that I finally got a text message from him.

"Did anything go wrong during the physical exam? Or are you just feeling unwell?"

I didn't reply to him, and he transferred another 1,000 dollars to me.

I read the notification from my bank app and didn't say a thing, heading straight toward the clinic instead.

I asked Dustin, "If I'm still alive and kicking after giving birth to the baby, is there any possibility of curing this cancer?"

He carefully looked at my examination report, took a deep breath, and said, "Viola… I hope that you can become that miracle."

My nose tingled with emotion. I nearly burst out crying at that moment.

I knew that hope was slim, but I still had to try. What if it all worked out in the end?

I walked out of the hospital and saw Aaron crouching by the roadside, next to a stone wall.

"Were you waiting for me?"

He stubbed out the cigarette hanging from his lips as he nodded. "Are you sick?"

I didn't deny it. Instead, I asked tentatively, "Is Candance…pregnant?"

He lowered his head and said with some difficulty, "No. The pregnancy test expired."

I heaved a sigh of relief and thought of coming clean to him.

"Aaron, I'm p—"

"But we've agreed on a wedding date."

We both spoke at literally the same time.

My expression froze on my face. A few seconds of silence ensued before he continued, "We had sex again while I was staying with her. I need to take responsibility for her.

"We'll be getting married in three months."

When he realized that I wasn't responding, he pulled out a card from his pocket and pressed it into my hands.

"This is the money that the Blanchards gave me after learning that I was marrying Candace. There's 180,000 dollars in the card.

"She'll be giving you an invitation then, but please…don't come."

I dug my nails into the palms of my hands. I didn't know what to say to him. I simply couldn't find it in me to wish him well at all.

Ultimately, I just hummed in acknowledgment and turned to leave.

"You should stop digging your nails into your palms, Viola. It's a bad habit you need to unlearn."

I heard him. He was speaking quite loudly, after all. However, the only response he got from me was the sound of the bustling traffic behind me.

After getting back to our rented apartment that evening, I sat on the couch, reading up on prenatal education. The sound of a key turning in the door made me tense on instinct.

It was Aaron. He glanced at me with a troubled expression.

I put on my indoor slippers and went up to him. It was then that I realized Candace was there too, holding a limited-edition handbag while leaning lazily against the door. Her long, wavy hair cascaded down behind her.

So, he was feeling troubled because I was in this dilapidated apartment right now.

I observed his expression and went to my room, grabbing the biggest travel bag I could find. Then, I quickly began packing up my things.

Fortunately, our lease was ending soon, and we hadn't renewed it yet.

While dragging my things out of the door, Candace called out to me.

"Viola, Ronnie and I never intended for you to move out. You don't have a job, do you? Why don't you stay behind and work as our housekeeper? I'll pay you 5,000 dollars a month."

I clenched my fist and grabbed the nearest mug, throwing it at her dolled-up face.

The mug smashed to pieces, but I'd missed her.

Candance immediately ran back into the apartment and into Aaron's embrace, telling tales on me with an aggrieved look on her face.

"Did I say anything wrong, Ronnie?"

Aaron pushed her aside and marched up to me.

"You actually dared to lay a finger on her, Viola Goodwin? Are you out of your mind? Are you bipolar or something? You weren't like this in the past!"

I raised my head high and glared at him before grinning with my eyes wide.

"Yeah, maybe I am bipolar. So, do you still want me to be your housekeeper? Would you dare to do it?"

He plucked the cigarette from his ear and put it into his mouth. Then, he looked at me and softened his tone with me.

"I wouldn't dare. You should go as far away as you can. It'll be even better if we never meet again."

Hidden inside the box was the bank card that Aaron had given me, containing the 180,000 dollars in it. The other card was mine, containing all of the copyright fees and royalties from my written work. There was also a letter addressed to him. That was the backup plan that I had prepared for my baby.Aaron slowly opened the envelope and began reading."Hi, Aaron. If you're reading this letter, it means that I'm most likely not around anymore. But I just wanted to explain myself to you."I never betrayed you ever, ever since the beginning of our relationship."I guess I'd have already given birth to my baby by now, but I unfortunately didn't make it in the end. I can't stop worrying about the baby. That's why I'm writing this letter to you."Please take good care of the baby until they've grown up. You're a very good and kind person, and I feel at ease leaving my baby to you."But Candace isn't a good person. If you manage to bring our baby home, please, please always keep our ba

"I hate Viola," Candace said. "I hate her pretentious attitude. She's dirt poor, and yet, she still acted so arrogantly and refused to accept handouts and charity. She kept saying random bullshit like 'poverty doesn't diminish ambition' or something. It's hilarious."As for why I targeted you in the first place? Well, I wanted to see if the supposedly unbreakable and unwavering love she always talked about in college really existed."Aaron's chest heaved violently. He was so agitated that he wanted to rush forward and tear Candace apart with his hands."You murderer! You destroyed her! You completely destroyed her!"Candace screamed and staggered backward. As a result, Aaron was detained for a couple more days.I looked at the dejected Aaron with a million thoughts running through my head. I should be happy that his marriage had broken up, but I couldn't bring myself to laugh.During the days he was detained, Aaron kept staring at the CCTV camera above him. The moment he was rel

Aaron slowly stopped struggling. He raised his head, looking up as he grabbed Dustin's trouser leg."That's impossible! Viola was still fine when I left her! How could she possibly be dead?"He refused to believe anything Dustin told him and continued clinging to his pant leg. "I've already allowed her to get together with you! There's no need for you to continue hiding her from me like this."Dustin crouched down and grabbed Aaron by the collar."Too late. Maybe if you allowed it five years ago, she would never have had to die so young!"Then, he puffed out his cheeks, kicked Aaron away, and strode back into his clinic.Aaron lay on the ground, covering his face as he sobbed, "No… There was so much blood by the table… Did it hurt, Viola?"After he was done crying, he staggered toward the information desk in the main lobby and asked the staff for a copy of my medical records. Instead, the nurse told him that I had died two days ago, and gave him a copy of my death certificate in

"Dustin Krause? Shut the fuck up!" Aaron yelled into the phone. "Where's Viola? Let her speak on the phone! What, she's asking you to come and crash my wedding now?"I'm telling you, I am marrying Candace by hook or by crook, and nothing is ever going to change that! It won't matter even if you crash it!"Dustin sighed before flinging the phone from his tight grip onto the floor below. Then, he dragged his feet heavily back into the morgue. He crouched over my frozen body, smiling bitterly to himself."No wonder that clingy guy never came to the hospital with you after all… Didn't I tell you that he was an unreliable good-for-nothing five years ago? "What do you think would have changed if only I'd— Whatever. There's no going back or changing anything anyway."He turned and held my cold hand. His hot tears splashed down onto the back of my hand."How could you have lived such a miserable life for so long, Viola…"I floated in the air, patting him on his shoulder from afar.I n

Aaron then threw my bag out the door. He'd barely even left when Candace suddenly ran out after me, grabbing me by my arm at the stairs. She grinned sweetly at me. Her tone was gentle, as though she were coaxing a little child."Come on, Viola, won't you please stay? It's only for three months. I promise that I won't bother you anymore after the wedding."I didn't even spare her a glance and shook her hand off, trying to leave. However, she came even closer to me and spoke directly into my ear."Wasn't that prenatal education book really interesting? Say, what do you think is going to happen if I shoved you down the stairs right now? It wouldn't have to be a hard one. Just a little push… What if someone died?"And if you left now, who's to say that an accident wouldn't happen to you while you were out?"I gasped and felt the hairs on the back of my neck rising. I immediately spun around and grabbed her by her neck.My hands trembled. "You wouldn't dare!"She grabbed at my hands
