Chapter 2

Author: Pinehart
“Mr. Black, don’t be angry. Peter’s in the wrong, but I’ll immediately get my workers to get rid of these bricks. Tomorrow, I’ll personally pick the best marble for you.”

Walter snorted, showing that he was not buying it.

“John, don’t sweet-talk me! I don’t care how you do your business with your cousin, but you have to give me an explanation today! A hundred thousand dollars’ worth of material turned into a truckload of bricks. Do you really think I’m an idiot?”

Walter was extremely furious as he yelled at John, who endured the scolding without refuting. Then, he turned around and lashed his anger out at me.

“Peter, what are you standing here for? Apologize quickly to Mr. Black and give out the money that you’ve taken!”

I looked at John’s shameless face, and I felt numb. I spent these few years working hard for his company. Every time he transferred me money, he paid me way less than due.

Sand and concrete that were worth three thousand dollars, and he only paid me thirty dollars. The customized doors and windows that were worth five hundred thousand dollars, he only transferred me one thousand five hundred dollars.

I viewed him as family, so I forked up money from my pocket to pay for materials that were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When things went wrong, he did not feel bad. Instead, he pushed the responsibility onto me.

He wanted me to be his scapegoat. I took a deep breath and suppressed my anger.

I stared into his eyes and said firmly but calmly, “John, do you really want me to pay back the differences in money?”

John was momentarily stunned before he started to avoid my gaze.

Rory immediately yelled.

“Of course! You stole money from the company! Are you actually planning to just keep it? You have to tally the account before Mr. Black and the rest of the workers today!”

I sneered. “Alright, then let’s look into the account.”

Rory heard that I agreed to her request and immediately brightened up. She pointed at me as her voice became higher.

“Let’s do that! If you can’t show me the receipt of the hundred-thousand-dollar purchase, then you’re an embezzler! I’m going to call the cops on you! And you’re going to jail!”

The workers discussed even louder on the second floor.

“It’s game over for Mr. Smith. His greed was too obvious.”

“A hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money. It’ll result in a few years of jail time.”

“He seemed pretty generous recently, and he always paid for our meal. It turned out that he was just using Mr. Anderson’s money!”

The workers were gossiping in disdain, and Rory looked extremely smug.

John pretended to sigh too.

“Peter, it’s not too late to own up to your mistake. Just hand us the money. I won’t call the cops on you. We’re family after all.”

Walter crossed his arms and stared at me coldly as he waited for my explanation.

I ignored John’s and Rory’s words.

I immediately took out my phone from my pocket and clicked on my text messaging app to pull up the conversation of transaction details with John from the previous night. Then, I turned up the brightness of my phone and passed it to Walter.

“Mr. Black, have a good look at this. This is the money John transferred me last night when he requested me to purchase your imported marble.”

Walter glanced at the phone.

Then, his eyes immediately widened in disbelief.

“A thousand dollars?”

Walter immediately looked up and glared at John.

“John! You took my hundred thousand dollars, and you only transferred a thousand dollars to your subordinate to purchase imported marble?”

After he said that, everyone became quiet.

Rory’s smug expression froze.

Blood drained out of John’s face. He frantically rushed over, clearly wanting to snatch my phone. I dodged his hand and then showed my screen to the workers upstairs.

A few days later, his work license was revoked according to law. The renovation company owner that was high and aloof immediately turned into a person that many despised. A few masked gangsters sneaked into our site and smashed a dozen expensive windows that we had just installed. The next morning, the workers looked at the glass shards and cursed. When I received the phone call and reached the site, I was not panicked at all. I knew that John would not be happy and that he would cause disruptions. I had thus installed a few high-resolution cameras in the hidden corners of the site. I immediately retrieved the surveillance footage. The videos clearly revealed their unique marks, even with their faces covered. One of them was a gangster who usually hung out with John. I immediately sent the video to the police. The gangsters were captured by the police in less than a day. Under the police interrogation, they very quickly confessed that John was behind this incident. John was called to the police station. He had no way of lying his way out with the evidence. In the end, he was forced to compensate me thrice as much as the original price

“However, I’ve looked into these few banks of the checks given.”I waved the check and immediately tore it into pieces in front of everyone. “This is a fake check! It’s worth nothing! John wants us to go back to work after giving us fake checks!”The senior workers were enraged after hearing that. They rushed forward and grabbed John’s collar. “You’re a liar! How dare you lie to us with fake checks!”John cowered in fear. I looked at the anxious workers and immediately walked toward them. I took out my phone and pulled up my bank app. “Everyone, since you’ve worked with me for so long, I won’t let you starve. I still have a hundred thousand dollars of personal savings. For those of you who desperately need money, come and register with me. I’ll help you with your expenses for this month!”The workers teared up after hearing my offer. A few young workers stepped forward. “Mr. Smith, you’re the man!”“We can no longer work with a horrible boss! We’ll work for you, Mr. Sm

“John, I have paid six hundred eighteen thousand dollars of material fees! You have to pay me back today!”John saw that the situation no longer favored him, so he immediately started to throw a tantrum. He stood up and patted the dust from his pants. “I don’t have money! You can take my life if you want! You delayed my project progress with those bricks, and it resulted in Mr. Black terminating his contract with me. I will sue you for my damages!”Rory was still held back by the workers as she yelled. “That’s right! We’re not even giving him a single cent! Let him sue us!”I no longer wasted my breath on this unreasonable couple. I took out my phone and made a call to the labor inspection team. “Hello, I want to report John Anderson’s renovation company for delaying payment and salary to his employees.”After I ended the call, I called the tax bureau. “Hello, I want to report a serious corruption and tax evasion case of John Anderson’s renovation company. They’re also cheati

John was terrified. He fell onto his knees. “Mr. Black! Hear me out! This is the norm in the industry!”I ignored John’s cries and took out my phone to log into the workers’ group chat. Then, I sent a form detailing all the expenses that I had prepared the night before into the group chat. “Everyone can read the list in the group chat.”I looked at the workers on the second floor and said firmly.“For three years, I helped John pay six hundred and eighteen thousand dollars! I do not owe him a single cent. He owes me six hundred and eighteen thousand dollars of my hard-earned money instead!”John’s lies were finally unraveled. The workers read the information I had sent. Everyone was shocked. “So Mr. Anderson’s the bloodsucker!”“He’s scamming his own cousin! He has no morals!”Walter kicked the table before him. “John, you’re a scammer! I’m not going to let you off the hook!” John collapsed onto the floor and looked defeated. Rory finally came to her senses as she screa

John’s expression changed. “Peter! Don’t go overboard!”I ignored him and walked out of the mansion. Rory was screaming behind me. “He’s going to run! Stop him, quick! Don’t let him escape!”The workers stared at each other, helpless. None of them dared to stop me. I walked towards my pickup truck and opened its door. Then, I took out a stuffed black bag from underneath my passenger seat. I walked back into the living room with the bag. Rory saw the bag in my hand, and her eyes immediately brightened. She yelled smugly at Walter and the workers. “Quick, look! He came back with the money! I told you that he stole money from the company! I bet this bag is stuffed with cash!”Rory rushed forward and tried to grab the bag from me. I dodged her and walked to the wooden table in the middle of the living room, where I zipped the bag open before grabbing its other end and flipping it over. It was not money that came out. Instead, it was stacks of receipts, invoices, and ba
