Chapter 8

Penulis: Scholar on Fire
The day Elliott came to the house, Dad was crouched by the balcony replacing the clasp on the chest. He worked the small screwdriver slowly, sunlight falling across his graying hair.

The doorbell rang. Owen went to answer it, and when he saw Elliott, his face hardened. "What are you doing here?"

Elliott was holding a bag of gifts wrapped in expensive packaging that had Catherine written all over it. He stood in the doorway with most of his usual composure stripped away. "I want to see Sadie."

  • My Dad, Sidelined at My Wedding   Chapter 10

Two months later, Everwell landed the Whitfield project. On the day of the signing ceremony, Dad sat in the front row. He was wearing a new light blue dress shirt. It wasn't expensive, but it was pressed crisp and clean. Owen sat beside him, clutching a folder, flipping through it nervously over and over.Dad nudged him quietly. "Stop flipping. You're going to wear the pages out."Owen didn't back down. "I'm checking."I stood on stage looking at the two of them, and suddenly I was back at the wedding, watching Dad sit by the kitchen doors with the catering carts behind him and broth stains at his feet, barely daring to clap.Today, he was in the front row, and nobody asked him to move aside. Nobody told him he was in the way of the cameras. After the signing, James shook my hand. "Ms. Reed, looking forward to the partnership."When those words landed, Dad's eyes lit up. He straightened up a little in his seat, like he wanted everyone to know I was his daughter. When the event

By the time Elliott got back to the office, the board was already waiting for him. The wedding fallout, the Whitfield project suspension, and Theo's disaster at the dinner—all of it had been laid out on the conference table.Howard sat at the head, his expression grim. "I gave you that project to deliver results, not to drag outsiders along and embarrass this company."Elliott stood in the conference room without sitting down. He'd always been comfortable being questioned and pressed and scrutinized, and he could usually handle it all with composure. But this time, he couldn't even get through a single explanation, because every one of those things really had been his doing. He was the one who pulled Owen. He was the one who gave Theo free rein. He was the one who let Claire's family take the main table. And he was the one who stood on stage thanking the Carver family by name without once mentioning Dad.When the meeting ended, Howard left him with one sentence. "Your succession c

"What are you doing here?"Elliott was holding a bag of gifts wrapped in expensive packaging that had Catherine written all over it. He stood in the doorway with most of his usual composure stripped away. "I want to see Sadie."Owen scoffed. "She doesn't want to see you."Elliott didn't leave. He looked past Owen and spotted Dad out on the balcony. Before all of this, Dad would have been on his feet the moment Elliott walked in, calling out his name with a smile, scrambling to find something to offer him. This time, Dad just set down his screwdriver and slowly straightened up. "Mr. Chambers."Elliott stiffened for a moment. He carried the gifts inside and set them on the coffee table. "Sir, the way things were hand

Elliott didn't believe he couldn't handle James without me. He'd always been like that. When I stayed up all night reworking proposals, he said that was just part of my job. When I rode out to suburban factories with the client until my shoes gave me blisters, he said women were better at that kind of detail work anyway. When I negotiated the budget down to a number James could live with, all Elliott said in the meeting was that the team did a solid job. He didn't say my name.So naturally, he assumed all I'd taken with me were a few files and not the project itself.Three days later, he set up a dinner with James and brought Theo along. I heard about it while I was standing in line at the clerk's office, filing paperwork.Owen was next to me, holding a stack of documents, and Dad was sitting in one of the waiting chairs with the half-repaired chest on his lap. The clasp still wasn't fixed properly, so he kept one hand pressed against the lid to stop it from falling open.Owen mu

The call connected, and James's voice came through. "Sadie?"The ballroom was silent. Everyone was watching me. Elliott's expression shifted from impatience to warning, but I didn't flinch."Mr. Whitfield, the wedding's been called off."Elliott's face changed instantly. Catherine rushed forward. "Sadie, don't you dare!"I kept going. "I'll no longer be handling the Chambers Corp account going forward. If you're open to it, I'd like to resubmit the proposal independently, under my own name."The line was quiet for a few seconds. Then James asked one question. "Are you still in?""I am.""Then I'm backing you."Catherine's composure cracked. "The Whitfield account is a Chambers Corp project. Since when do you get to make that call?"I hung up. "Since I spent three straight months reworking the proposal for Chambers Corp, visiting factories with Mr. Whitfield, auditing the supply chain, and rebuilding the budget from scratch."Elliott kept his voice low. "Sadie, do you really n

The room went dead silent, and then the murmuring erupted all at once.Elliott seized my wrist. His jaw was clenched, and his voice was barely above a whisper. "Sadie, have you lost your mind? Do you have any idea how many people are here today?"I pulled my hand free.Catherine rose from the main table. The smile was gone."A wedding isn't something you start and stop whenever you feel like it. The venue, the planners, the guest accommodations... Do you have any idea what all of this costs? Can your family even afford to pay it back?"Dad's face went white, and he stood up from his corner. "Catherine, this whole thing..."A server pushed a cart past behind him, and he stepped aside to make room. It was the smallest step, and almost nobody noticed. But I saw it. At his own daughter's wedding, he couldn't even find a place to stand and speak.Claire walked up with tears in her eyes. "Sadie, if this is because of me, I'll leave right now."She looked at Elliott, her voice shaking
