As I stepped out of the interview office, I spotted Lily approaching. Her eyes lit up with mischief and as if she was about to speak, but I didn’t slow down. I

I had no patience for whatever she wanted to say. Without acknowledging her, I turned in the opposite direction, quickening my steps until I was outside.

The moment I stepped out of the office, my phone rang again.

Mom.

I clenched my jaw, torn between ignoring it and knowing she wouldn’t stop until I picked up. With an exhausted sigh, I swiped to answer.

After this call, I can finally have her out of my life… again, until she needs something and calls.

“Finally,” her voice chirped, too sweet, too fake. “I was starting to think you would never pick up, sweetheart.”

I rolled my eyes, already regretting my decision. “What do you want?”

“Oh, Sophia, don’t be so cold. I have wonderful news! I’m getting married.”

I stopped walking. Married? Again?

I had lost count of how many times my mother had gotten married. Since my father left, there had been dozens of men in her life. I couldn't even remember the name of the last one.

“I know, shocking, isn’t it?” she giggled, as if she hadn’t just dropped a bomb on me. “He’s absolutely perfect. Filthy rich, darling. You’re going to love him.”

Translation: Maybe he’s widowed or divorced, showers her with gifts, has more money than God himself..Yes, my mother was that unscrupulous.

My stomach twisted. I wanted to tell her I didn’t care, that she could marry the entire billionaire’s club for all I cared, but I knew my mother, this wasn’t just about her happiness.

It was about appearances.

“I’m having a family dinner tomorrow to introduce everyone,” she continued. “And you, my dear, are expected to be there.”

I pressed my fingers against my temple. “Mom, I—”

“No excuses,” she interrupted, voice sharp. “I already sent a dress to your place. Don’t embarrass me by showing up in one of those cheap things you call clothes.”

Her words cut like they always did, but I refused to give her the satisfaction of reacting.

I wasn’t the sixteen-year-old girl she could put down with a few words. My mother was, without a doubt, a bitch. She didn’t even ask about my job interview. She was beyond selfish.

“Fine,” I said flatly.

“Wonderful! See you tomorrow, sweetheart.”

She hung up before I could change my mind.

By the time I got home, a sleek black package sat on my doorstep. I didn’t even have to open it to know what was inside.

When I finally peeled back the expensive wrapping, I let out a dry laugh.

Red.

A bold, scandalous red dress. The dress didn't look like something I would wear to a dinner. It looked like a stripper dress.

As if she was auctioning me out or something.

My mind flashed back to Ethan’s words earlier.

"Red suits you."

I shoved the memory aside. He didn’t matter. This dress didn’t matter.

Yet, as I ran my fingers over the rich, silky fabric, something twisted in my stomach.

I wasn’t dressing for him. I was doing this to survive another night with my mother.

That’s all.

***

The next evening, I stood before my mirror, smoothing out the dress that clung to my body like sin itself.

Red indeed suits me.

The neckline plunged just enough to make me self-conscious, the slit running high up my thigh. I looked... dangerous and sensual.

I straightened my hair, letting it fall sleek and smooth down my back. A touch of red on my lips, smoky eyes, a pair of heels I rarely wore.

I couldn't step out like that, so I wore a black coat that made me feel somewhat better about my outfit.

For once, I looked like someone who belonged in my mother’s world.

I hated it.

And yet, when I walked into the five-star restaurant, heads turned, trying to get a better view of me.

But still, I felt as if I was a mummy wrapped in my coat, so I removed it. And that was when I blended in with the environment.

The atmosphere screamed wealth, the scent of aged wine, the glint of diamond-studded watches. I barely stepped inside when a familiar presence washed over me.

No.

I turned my head, and there he was.

Ethan, my possible boss and almost one-night stand.

He was standing at the bar, a drink in hand, eyes already locked on me as if he had been waiting.

My breath hitched. What the hell was he doing here?

I stalked toward him, heels clicking against the floor.

"Are you stalking me?" I hissed under my breath, aware of the curious glances around us.

His smirk was pure arrogance. “You wish.”

"Then what are you doing here?"

He lifted his glass, taking a slow sip before replying. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Before I could demand an answer, a voice called my name.

I turned to see my mother waving me over, beaming with artificial warmth. My stomach sank.

I barely had time to process before she took my hand and led me toward the table.

And then I heard her next words.

"Darling, I want you to meet your new step brother… Ethan."

The world stopped. I didn't even know how to continue breathing, but my mother kept talking.

"Ethan, meet Sophia." My mother beamed, and I wanted to die of embarrassment.

"Step-sister," his sinister voice dripped with amusement. "How convenient.”

I looked at my mother, then at Ethan, whose smirk deepened with amusement.

Stepbrother.

No. No. No.

My heart pounded as I considered running, because this was a nightmare I had no idea how to wake up from.

I heard the words, but my brain refused to process them. Ethan. My stepbrother. No. Fucking. Way. The restaurant spun around me, my mother's voice fading into the background. My legs refused to move, but finally, I forced them forward. As soon as I reached the table, she looped her arm around mine, her grip too tight, too controlling. "Everyone, this is my daughter, Sophia." I barely had time to register the older man sitting beside her before she gestured toward him with a manicured hand. "This is Robert Blackwood, my fiancé." "And this is his son, Ethan. But I’m sure you already know that." I didn’t miss her wink. Then she gestured toward a girl sitting beside Ethan. "And this is Rachel, his daughter." Rachel looked just like her father, but I barely spared her a glance. Because my attention was locked on Ethan. His smirk was slow, knowing. “Looks like we’re family now, little sister.” Rachel smiled warmly, completely unaware of the earth-shattering bomb that had just b

I knew they were getting married soon, but still. My mother had a toxic talent: luring in old, bored men with her hourglass figure. I had inherited the same shape, but unlike her, I preferred to cover it up rather than flaunt it.She played the part of the long-suffering woman who had raised her daughter alone, and that was exactly why she needed me here today. But I knew how this worked. She would get bored after six months, divorce him, and if she was lucky, walk away with half his money or at least the expensive gifts. That’s how we went from a trailer to a suburban house in three years. And now? Now she owns a mansion. One would think I am being too harsh on her, but stick around and see for yourself.I kept my focus on Rachel, pr

Ethan found his way to my side, his demeanor annoyingly relaxed. "Just tired. It has been a very long day." He knew I was talking about the hell of an interview, so he smirked. I knew he was was still hellbent on turning me into the joke of the dinner. I hated how he looked so handsome. Then again, the devil was once the most beautiful angel. "Hope you're njoying yourself?" he asked, changing the topic with that fake innocence in his voice. “I guess so?” I shrugged, uninterested in entertaining him. “You guess so? You're at a Michelin-star restaurant Little Sophie.” I raised my eyebrow at that nickname, 'Little Sophie' but I don't know why I found myself liking it. • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter Eleven: Welcome to Hell

Monday morning arrived far too quickly. The elevator ride up to the executive floor of Blackwood Corp felt like a slow march toward my hell, doom, and possible end. I had decided to dress down today, violently avoiding anything red or remotely appealing. Instead, I wore a slightly ruffled black dress that stopped below my knee and a blue blazer jacket, my hair in a plush bun. And after downing three cups of coffee, I knew I could do this. Lie. I can't do this. I can't handle this at all. My heart pounded against my ribs, my palms damp as I clutched my bag. But despite the anxiety clawing at my throat, a sense of satisfaction settled deep in my chest. I had gotten the position. Not my traitor of a best friend. That fact alone made this worth it. I told myself this job was a fresh start, a chance to prove myself, but when I stepped into Ethan’s office, I realized just how naive I had been. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, hands in his pockets, looking effortlessly

The room smelled like expensive cologne and power, a scent that was quickly becoming suffocating.I moved toward the copy machine in the corner, trying to do my job and leave as fast as possible, but his voice cut through the silence.“You and your mother,” he mused. “You guys are not close at all, are you?”My hands shook for half a second before I continued. “I don’t see how that’s relevant.”Ethan leaned back in his chair, watching me like a hunter amused by his prey’s weak attempt at esc

The wedding rehearsal dinner was exactly what I had expected, it was lavish, excessive, and filled with people who thrived on appearances. It was the kind of event where people pretended to be happy, pretended to be invested, but in reality, they were just waiting for the perfect moment to sink their claws into someone else's life, and my mother was at the center of it all.She laughed a little too loudly, touched Robert a little too often, and made sure every single person in the room knew how “blissfully happy” she was. But it wasn’t just Robert she was entertaining. I caught the way men looked at her as if she were a prize to be won. She knew it too, and from the way she entertained them I was almost certain she had found her next husband here. But if you ask me, This rehearsal dinner was pointless. ONE WEEK LATER- Sophie's POVIt had been a week, seven freaking long, quiet days since Ethan last spoke to me.He hadn’t called or even texted, I didn't even get a forwarded meme or a “hey.”And I didn’t reach out either, not because I didn’t want to, but because I meant what I said. I could still work without him.I didn't know if it was because I hadn't been here for a while but everything came together just perfectly, to say that it was stunning was an incredible understatement. It was regal with floor to ceiling windows and it didn’t look like something built in under a year.“This is impressive,” I muttered to myself as I smooth

We were just about to leave when the receptionist called me back."Miss? The second she said his name, it was like an electric shock shot straight through Ethan. His body tensed, his usual composed exterior cracking as his eyes locked onto the nurse with an intensity that almost startled me. His reaction wasn’t subtle in any way it was as if someone had just tossed a bucket of ice-cold water over him, and he was struggling to process it.He looked both relieved and scared at the same time, and it was understandable. I could practically feel his anxiety pressing on my chest.“You worked with Dr. Callahan?” Ethan asked, his voice desperate. The nurse blinked at him, a little startled by his intensity. “Yeah. Unfortunately,” she muttered as she didn't try to hide her bitterness. “For a long time.”“Can I—” Ethan paused, swallowing the words as though they were fighting their way out of him. “Can I ask you some questions about him?”He asked it like she was offering something precious, like every word she could give him was the missing piece to a puzzle tha
