Chapter 4

Penulis: Sugarless Boba
At 8:30 am the next morning, I arrived at the city police headquarters.

My legs felt like jelly. It took me three times as long as usual to climb the dozen or so steps to the second floor.

A veteran officer in his 50s was waiting for me.

He slid a clear evidence bag across the desk.

Inside was the silver locket. It had darkened with age, and part of the chain had broken, but its shape was still the same.

I reached out and touched the scratch in the lower-left corner through the plastic.

It was mine.

It belonged to my daughter.

I collapsed onto the office floor and sobbed.

She had been gone for 25 years.

I clutched the evidence bag, tears streaming down my face.

I didn't know how long I cried before finally wiping my face and pulling out the bank statements and evidence of Sophie's theft.

I slapped them onto the desk.

"I want to file a report. My adopted daughter, Sophie Bennett, stole 300 thousand dollars. I want the Financial Crimes Division to open a case."

The veteran officer gave me a strange look.

He didn't take the documents.

Instead, he stood and retrieved a cotton swab and a sample tube.

"Ms. Lyons, first, we need to perform an expedited DNA test."

I bit down on the swab, tears still streaming down my face.

Then came the waiting.

Three hours passed.

I sat in that office without drinking a sip of water or even using the restroom. I couldn't stop thinking about the same question over and over.

If my child had survived, what kind of life had she lived for the past 25 years?

Had she been sold by human traffickers? Or forced into child labor somewhere? Or left homeless, begging on the streets?

She had been just a tiny baby when she went missing, left to fend for herself in this world for 25 years.

The more I thought about it, the more unbearable it became. My fingernails dug into my palms until they left bloody marks.

At 1:17 pm, the door opened.

A brown envelope was placed on the desk.

But I didn't look at it.

My eyes were fixed on the woman standing in the doorway.

She was young, dressed in a crisp police uniform, with two bars and a star on her shoulders.

Her short hair was neatly tucked behind her ears. Her back was straight, and every step was quick and steady.

The moment she entered, the three officers sitting in the room immediately stood.

"Captain Reed."

She nodded in acknowledgment, then looked straight at me.

Her eyes were red.

But she didn't cry.

She walked over, knelt in front of me, and took both my hands in hers.

Her hands were warm and strong. There was an old scar across the back of one.

When she spoke, her voice trembled slightly, but every word was clear.

"Mom."

After a moment, she added, "Mom, I'm sorry you had to suffer all these years."

I went numb.

That single word, "Mom", hit me like a defibrillator, pulling me back from 25 years of darkness.

She picked up the brown envelope and pulled out the DNA report. She pointed to the result and held it out to me.

"My name is Liana Reed. I'm the captain of the Financial Crimes Division. Three years ago, while investigating an international fraud case, I discovered the truth about my identity. That trail eventually led me to the locket."

My ears were ringing.

She tightened her grip on my hands.

"Sophie is suspected of involvement in the largest international telecom fraud case we've been investigating. The mastermind goes by the codename 'Black Dragon'. My team has been tracking him for three years."

She paused, then lifted her chin resolutely.

"I'll get you the justice you deserve."

Four months later, the verdict was handed down. Sophie was sentenced to seven and a half years for concealing criminal proceeds and acting as an accomplice to fraud. Daniel received 23 years for money laundering, extortion, and additional charges stemming from his previous drug-trafficking case. On the day the judge delivered the verdict, I sat in the gallery and watched Sophie being led out of the courtroom in a gray prison uniform. When she passed me, she stopped and looked back. Her lips moved, but no words came out. I said nothing. A bailiff urged her forward, and she stumbled out of the courtroom. Most of the 300 thousand that belonged to Ethan was eventually recovered through international legal cooperation. He came to our house in person and apologized sincerely. "Margaret, I'm sorry. I know my family said some terrible things before." I asked him to sit down for tea and told him he still had a long life ahead of him. He couldn't let this one thing hold him

On the third day, one of Liana's colleagues called me, sounding uneasy."Mrs. Bennett, Sophie has been causing trouble in the interrogation room for three days. She won't confess to anything, but she keeps demanding to see you and Captain Reed."When I arrived at police headquarters, I watched through the one-way glass. Sophie sat in a metal chair, her messy hair falling around her face, her handcuffs secured to a metal ring on the table.A stack of printed transaction and call records sat in front of her. She hadn't even looked at them. Liana sat across from her, reviewing the case file and taking notes. Suddenly, Sophie spoke, her voice sharp enough to carry through the glass. "So you're Liana? Who the hell do you think you are? You were found in a trash heap. What makes you think you have any right to interrogate me?"Liana didn't look up. She kept writing. When Sophie got no reaction, she started pounding the table. "You're interrogating me? What right do you have?

At the notary's office, Daniel sprawled across the leather sofa, legs crossed as he casually chewed on the complimentary chips. Sophie sat beside him, sipping water and looking around the nicely furnished room. Daniel tapped his fingers on the coffee table. "One million isn't enough. My daughter told me about your daughter. I'm sure a police captain makes a ton of money. And she gets to inherit your house, right? Let's add it all up and make it five million." I sat across from them, opened my briefcase, and slid a thick document across the table. "This is an agreement terminating the adoption and waiving all rights and obligations between us. Once you two sign it and stamp your fingerprints on it, we'll be strangers for good. You will no longer contact or harass me or my daughter again. Once it's signed, you'll get your money." Daniel grabbed the document and flipped straight to the signature page. "Where's the pen?" The notary handed him one. He signed the page. Be

Four days later, our quiet life fell apart. On the fifth morning, I had just stepped outside to go to the market when I found a crowd gathered downstairs. Three news vans were parked along the street, with cameras pointed at my balcony. Two people stood in the middle of the crowd. One was Sophie. She had changed into clean clothes, covered her bruises with makeup, and made herself look as helpless and pitiful as possible. The other was a thin man in his 50s, wearing a gold chain and reeking of cigarettes. I recognized him immediately. He looked much older than he had in the police records from 25 years ago, but that greasy, sinister look in his eyes hadn't changed. He was Sophie's biological father, Daniel Mercer, a convicted drug dealer and fraudster who had also been involved in illegal fundraising. He had been released from prison just last year. The moment he saw me, he forced tears into his eyes and shouted toward the cameras."Look at this woman! 25 years ago, s

Two months later, I was washing dishes one evening when the doorbell rang. I dried my hands and opened the door. It took me five seconds to recognize the woman standing there. Her hair was matted, her coat was torn in several places, and her shoes were mismatched. Her face was sunburnt and covered in bruises, and she had lost so much weight that her cheekbones jutted out. It was Sophie. The moment she saw me, her knees gave out. She collapsed in the doorway and screamed loud enough for the whole building to hear. "Mom! Please, save me! He's not some powerful man. He's a scammer! He locked me in a factory and forced me to work. I spent six months saving enough money to buy a ticket and sneak back!"I held onto the doorframe and didn't move. She crawled toward me, sobbing. "Mom, please forgive me. I was completely fooled. Please let me in. I'm starving." I stepped aside. It wasn't because I felt sorry for her. I wanted to see what she would do next. The first thing sh

I held Liana and cried in that office for nearly half an hour. She didn't pull away or try to comfort me. She simply patted my back over and over. When I finally caught my breath, she handed me a tissue and blinked hard, fighting back her own tears. My voice was hoarse. "How did you live all these years?"She pulled a chair across from me and sat down, her legs planted wide apart, looking almost like a soldier. "After I was found, the officers put me in an orphanage temporarily. Three days later, a recently discharged detective came there to investigate a case and ended up taking me home." Her voice was calm, almost as if she were giving a work report. "He was single. As a man raising a baby, he had no idea what he was doing. I grew up on baby formula. He raised me until I was 18, and then I joined the military. After I was discharged, I entered the police academy."I opened my mouth to ask more, but she waved me off. "Mom, we'll have plenty of time to talk about that la
