Chapter 3

Author: Redleaves
After Marlow left, Nina circled me once, and finding my face calm, she felt a little deflated.

I couldn't stop myself from asking, "Why did you tell the Don all that?"

Nina folded her arms, lifted her chin, and answered like she had every right to. "I'm an honest good girl. If I lie, my nose grows like Pinocchio's."

"And yesterday you said it yourself. I'm stolen!"

It was true. I'd said it the day before, to punish her.

So this was deliberate. She was punishing me right back.

And even "a bullet from the Family" hadn't fazed her.

A chill went through me. I made myself ask, "What if you really aren't mine? What if your real parents were bad people, and I took you away from them?"

I paused, clinging to one last thread of hope. "Would you really call the Don?"

"He's Daddy and Mommy's boss. His word is law. He really will put a bullet in Mommy."

Nina clapped her hands, thrilled.

"Of course I would! I'm an honest good girl!"

The words knocked the breath out of me.

I didn't know when Vincent had come back, but he'd been standing in the doorway for a while.

His face was dark. "Nina, I'm warning you. No calling the Don whenever you feel like it, and no posting videos about this family. You hear me?"

Then he sighed and rubbed my back. "She's still little... maybe when she's grown... she'll understand when she's grown."

Watching the hurt on my face, Nina covered her mouth and giggled.

Was she actually pleased she'd gotten away with it?

Seven years of caring for her, and this was what it bought me.

With my temper, I should have cut ties long ago.

But seven years. Seven whole years.

Did she really not care about us at all?

Nina, I would give you one more chance.

But this was the last one.

Looking at the number clutched tight in her hand, I said, deliberately, "Nina, you really aren't mine by blood. The file on your real parents is locked in the safe at home."

"From now on you learn to respect your mom and dad. If you don't change, we'll send you back to them."

At that, the careless look finally vanished from her face.

In its place came a flicker of unease.

She tugged at Vincent, her voice catching. "Daddy, is it true what Mommy said?"

In the end, Vincent went soft, though he kept his tone rough. "Mommy's just scaring you, since you can't keep that mouth shut. Let's see if you run it again."

Nina's tears turned to a grin. Hands on her hips, she pouted. "I knew you were just scaring me! I knew it wasn't real!"

"Hmph! This year I'm wishing on Santa to send me back to my real parents. I hate Mommy!"

She said it, then stared straight at my face on purpose.

I gave her the hurt look she wanted, and sure enough she smiled wider.

So that was it. She just liked hurting me.

She'd always believed she was mine by blood, and that was why she felt safe enough to wound me however she pleased.

Seven years of love, and she'd turned it into a license to do whatever she wanted.

Something in me went cold for good.

I didn't say another word to her.

And I didn't see the venom crawling into her eyes at my silence.

That night, I heard the bedroom door handle turn.

A small shape slipped inside.

Three minutes later, it slipped back out.

A little while later my phone chimed with a text from Marlow. "Your daughter called me. Says I should punish you, and hard... Sophia, if it comes to it, let the child go."

I gripped the phone and got up to deal with the safe. I'd made my decision.

But just then a new notification came in.

The Family group chat.

"@Sophia, uh oh, your Nina's acting up again!"

Nina had posted another TikTok.

I opened it and went rigid.

In the video, Nina sobbed straight into the camera for a crowd of total strangers.

"Somebody please save me! My mommy stole me! The proof is hidden in the safe at my house!"

"My mommy's a scary mafia lady! Bring lots of people!"

Nina had recognized me, I think.I'd changed cars, after all, but not the plate. She struggled to her feet and beat the dust off herself. She spat into her palm and smoothed down her tangled hair with it.Then she came limping toward me.In the car, Dolly was in the middle of telling me, with great animation, all the funny things that had happened at school.Seeing me drift off, she tilted her head and asked, "Mommy, why do you keep staring at the mirror like that?"I came back to myself and reached over to ruffle her hair."Nothing. Mommy just saw someone she knew a long time ago..."I stopped, suddenly unsure what to call her.Family? Not anymore. In the end, I found the right word."...someone. Mommy saw someone she used to know a long time ago."What Nina meant to me now.Just someone. Nothing more.Dolly tilted her head at me, not understanding, but she smiled sweetly and suddenly said, "Mommy, you're so pretty!"Warmth spread through me, and I glanced at the mirror.Seven years h

That familiar voice, those familiar words, made me stop the car and look a little longer. Her clothes were cheap and gaudy, and her face looked thirty. It took me a while to place her.It was Nina.Six years earlier, a caseworker from the orphanage had come to see me.She'd wanted to talk me into adopting Nina again."That girl you adopted before, her parents are truly worthless. For money, they sold her straight to an organ ring. She's already lost a kidney, and now she's too terrified to go home. She wants you to take her back. Would you?"I looked at Dolly in my arms, smiling up at me, sweet as anything."No. I have my own child now. I won't have her affecting Dolly."The caseworker sighed and said, softly, "I figured as much. I read up on her before I came. I knew it was a long shot.""You were so good to her, and she was so cruel to you. Who'd dare raise a child like that?""And with parents like hers, it looks like she'll just have to stay at the orphanage."Where Nina went after

Once the clarification video went up, the whole storm finally died down.Nina posted nothing more. How the Morettis managed that, I didn't care to know. Then came the court date, and Vincent had everything arranged. With the birth parents' claim and the statement Nina had signed herself, the judge honored her stated wishes and returned custody to her real parents. And on the very day my ties to Nina were severed for good, the hospital called with good news.I was pregnant.Ten months later, the baby came. A girl.I held the baby who looked almost exactly like me and wept for joy.Her eyes weren't open yet, but when I lifted her, she smiled, sweet as could be.This was my daughter.Vincent and I named her Dorothy, and we called her Dolly. She was our lucky star. The year she turned two, Vincent got his wish and founded his own Family, becoming a Don.He was Don Hale, and I was his Donna.Dolly grew day by day, and before long seven years had passed and she was starting grade school.I c

But no matter how she begged, I didn't look back.I said quietly, "Is that so? I gave up on you a long time ago.""Don't forget." I bit out the words. "You're the one who said it. I'll be useless when I'm old. This family doesn't feed freeloaders.""It's not true! None of it's true! I was just angry!"She screamed it, frantic and afraid. "I said it on purpose to make you mad! It wasn't the honest truth!""Oh?"I gave a cold laugh. "That can't be right. You're an honest girl, remember? You told me again and again it was the truth.""Not once, not three times, but..." I laid each word down. "Every single time."Nina didn't answer. She couldn't, I think. She'd dug this hole herself, and now she'd fallen straight into it.The moment the door closed, I let out a long breath.Vincent pulled me in, sighed, and rubbed my back. "She’s just an ungrateful ingrate through and through. All those years of kindness, and not a scrap of it stuck.""Don't grieve over it. Treat it like a nightmare you've

Looking at Nina's face, I couldn't help thinking back to three days before. She'd openly threatened a classmate she didn't like, saying she'd bring a gun the next day and shoot him dead.It took me endless talking to convince the teacher it was just something she'd said in anger. But she held it against me, and went on at me every day."Honest truth, Mommy, I think you're completely useless.""I don't like that kid, and not only did you not stand up for me, you apologized to him.""People online say If you can’t protect your children, you shouldn’t have them."I'd explained to her a hundred times that violence is the very last resort.Besides, she and the boy had only been arguing over which character in some cartoon was more likeable. There was nothing for me to avenge. But none of it got through. She just held her grudge and looked for ways to get back at me.I sighed, and my mind came back to the present."Nina, whether I ever abused you, you know perfectly well in your own heart. A

The man stared me down, smiling like a snake."You think an adoption's a game? You can just decide you're done?""Until a judge says otherwise, you keep her whether you want her or not! You don't want her? What makes you think I do?"His eyes lingered on the sapphire at my throat, and he ran his tongue over the corner of his mouth."Rich as you are, and after abusing my daughter all these years, it'd hardly be right if you didn't pay up. Would it?"Vincent and I exchanged a look that said the same thing. “There it is.”Seven years ago, the forty thousand hadn't satisfied this pair of junkies. They'd wanted four million to call it even, and only vanished when other creditors hunted them into a corner."You fobbed me off with that paltry sum back then.""Now you want me to take her off your hands? You'll make up the difference." The man's eyes rolled, and then he said it. "Five million!"The woman put out her hand too."That's right, not a cent less! Pay up!"I gave a cold laugh. No wond
