Chapter 2

Author: Gilbert
When it was time for the toasts, Dante led me from table to table.

But he made sure to introduce Elena to every family boss.

"This is Elena. There's no one I trust more. We grew up together. She's family to me."

Elena leaned into him, her smile sickly sweet.

I looked at their nearly touching shoulders, but my mind drifted to the figure in the corner of the hall.

It was summer in Sicily, seven years earlier.

Seven years ago, I'd stared a second too long at a red dress in a shop window. Gabriel had taken on a local gang by himself, robbed them, and used the money to buy it for me.

He stood in front of me covered in blood, grinning like an idiot. "Serena, my girl deserves the best."

He never let anyone treat me badly, not even a little.

Then came the hit meant for me.

When the car bomb went off, he covered me with his body.

The flames swallowed everything.

I dug through the blood-soaked wreckage with my bare hands for three days and three nights.

All I found was a broken pocket watch.

Those were the darkest days of my life. Dante sat at my bedside every day, brought me water and medicine, and handled family business for me.

I thought he was my salvation.

I thought that if I held on to that one lifeline, I could survive without Gabriel.

So I agreed to the marriage alliance.

Looking back, it was a joke.

"Serena, why are you spacing out?" Dante nudged my elbow. "Head table."

I pushed down the turmoil in my head and pulled my eyes away from the corner.

It was time to clean up tonight's mess.

We walked to the east side of the hall.

My father, Don Lorenzo Rossi, head of the Rossi family, sat with Dante's father, Don Vincenzo Corsini.

Gabriel stood quietly a step behind me and to one side, like a shadow.

I could feel him watching me.

His gaze stayed on my back the whole time.

I barely dared to breathe. I wanted so badly to turn around and make sure it was him.

But I couldn't.

"Serena looks beautiful tonight." Vincenzo raised his glass. "Dante, you'd better treat her right."

"Of course, Father." Dante nodded, then said, "Let's take a group photo to mark the alliance."

The older generation agreed.

The photographer scrambled to set up his equipment.

"Wait." Dante and I said it at the same time.

I took an antique pocket watch out of my clutch.

The edge of its face was stained with dark red blood that would never wash off. It was the only thing Gabriel had left me seven years ago.

"I'm holding this." My tone left no room for argument.

Dante's mother frowned. "That old broken watch? Holding that at a blood pact ceremony is terrible luck."

"It means everything to me."

I gripped it tighter, feeling the cold metal edges.

Dante tried to keep the peace. "Mother, if Serena wants to hold it, let her."

He turned to the photographer.

The photographer began, "Okay, if everyone could..."

"I want to add someone." Dante cut him off. Before anyone could react, he reached out and pulled Elena into the center. "Elena, come here."

I stared at him.

He'd actually pulled an outsider into the picture.

He'd already humiliated me, and apparently that wasn't enough.

The air in the room froze.

My father's expression darkened. "Dante, Ms. Ferri isn't an official member of the Corsini family. She doesn't belong in the alliance photo."

"Don Rossi, Elena is family to me." Dante casually draped an arm over her shoulders. "What's wrong with Elena being in a picture?"

Elena leaned right into his side and gave my father a taunting little smirk.

We stood on either side of Dante in almost identical gowns.

To everyone watching, we looked like two women sharing the same man.

Whispers broke out all around us.

The photographer was sweating and had no idea what to do.

Gabriel stepped forward. "I'll take the photo." He took the camera, his movements smooth and precise. "Ready?" He raised the camera.

Just as the flash went off, Elena gasped, pretended to twist her ankle, and slammed her shoulder into me.

The pocket watch slipped from my fingers.

Crack.

Its glass face shattered on the marble floor.

"My watch!" I dropped to my knees.

Elena stepped back in alarm and smoothed her skirt. Then she covered her mouth and cried out. "Oh my God, Serena, I'm so sorry! I really didn't mean to!"

Her eyes reddened as if she were about to cry, but her voice was just loud enough for everyone around us to hear.

A chill crept up my spine.

I stared at the broken glass.

"Elena." Dante immediately stepped in front of her. "Serena, she didn't mean it. She just tripped. Throw that junk away and let's finish the photo, okay?"

I looked up at him. That watch was what had kept me alive for seven years.

And he still had that smug, superior look on his face, like none of this was his problem.

"You know how much this watch means to me."

"I know, I know." He tried to calm me down. "It's just a watch. Tomorrow I'll buy you a Patek Philippe. Whichever one you want." His voice softened. "Serena, do this for me. Don't make a scene in front of the five families. Just let it go."

Whatever I'd felt for him was dead. All that remained was cold disgust.

Footsteps came closer.

It was Gabriel.

Without a word, he took out a clean handkerchief and carefully gathered up the pieces.

The tears came all at once.

In the end, they took the photo anyway.

It was a twisted picture.

Dante and Elena stood front and center, smiling sweetly.

I stood off at the edge, and I wasn't looking at the camera.

I was looking past it, at the man behind the camera whose eyes were locked on me.

After the wedding, Gabriel and I cemented our hold on the underworld. The Rossi family and the High Council became one.Our life was full of danger, power, and an intoxicating passion.Every morning, I woke up to the rich smell of coffee.Gabriel was an early riser. He controlled half of Europe's underworld and had thousands of hardened criminals under him.But he still insisted on making my espresso himself every day.I leaned against the kitchen doorframe.I watched him in a black silk shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbows, showing the old scars crisscrossing his strong forearms."Morning, Serena." He brought the cup over and bent to kiss my forehead. To the outside world, Gabriel was the ruthless Ghost Don.To me, he was the man who would burn down a whole city just to keep me warm. One day, I finished my rounds at the port early and pushed open the door to the underground meeting hall.He was sitting at the head of the room.Kneeling at his feet was a traitor who'd leaked our

The wedding was held at the oldest estate in Sicily. It was the wedding of the century.Every boss, captain, and underboss in Europe came to bow before the new Supreme Don and his Donna.I wore a diamond-studded wedding gown, its train sweeping over a blood-red carpet.Gabriel wore a tailored black suit with a dark gold rose pinned to his lapel, the symbol of absolute power. We stood beneath the dome and exchanged our vows."Serena, pushing you out of that car seven years ago was the best decision I've ever made." Gabriel laced his fingers through mine. "I'm back now. I swear on my life, I will never let you go again. No one will ever touch a hair on your head."My vision blurred, and warmth spread through my chest.I couldn't stop the tears. But this time, they were happy ones."Gabriel, I waited seven years." I squeezed his hand back, my voice shaking but completely sure. "I love you. I have since I was 17, and I will until the day I die."We exchanged rings. Then he pulled me tight

Dante didn't believe I would really marry Gabriel. He thought it was just a power play.A bluff to make him give in.That changed when the Rossi family, with Gabriel's quiet backing, swiftly seized the Corsini family's southern port and three of its main smuggling routes.Under pressure from both sides and with nowhere to turn, Dante lost control. He tried to win me back with what little leverage he had left and memories of the past we had shared.Every day, he sent crates of uncut diamonds and antique guns to my estate. Each delivery came with a desperate letter begging for peace. He even stood outside the Rossi family's council hall all night in a downpour, swearing to my father that if I'd just come back to him, he'd send Elena's head over in a box.But I didn't care.Because we'd started planning the wedding. It wasn't just a marriage between two families. It was the crowning of the Supreme Don.Gabriel stood behind me in front of a full-length mirror. His large hand rested on my w

The streetlights cast a dim yellow glow over the hospital garden. We walked in silence until Dante stopped. "Serena, I screwed up."I shouldn't have given her the necklace. I shouldn't have let her smash your pocket watch."Give me one more chance. We'll start over."I'll send Elena away to South America. You'll never see her again."We'll redo the blood pact ceremony. No, forget that. We'll just get married! I swear to you, Serena."I stopped and looked at him.In the dim light, he was still the dangerous, handsome mob boss I'd once loved.Three months ago, those words might have gotten to me.But now I felt nothing."Dante, do you remember what you promised me when we first got together?"He hesitated."You said that in public, I'd always come first and Elena would never get in the way."And what happened? At my father's birthday party, she showed up and made a scene, claiming she was your woman. It almost turned into a shootout. You told me it was a joke."She ruined the smuggling m

Sure enough, Dante called. When I picked up, he sounded exhausted, with a trace of panic just under the surface. "Serena, come to the Corsini hospital. Elena's in bad shape. She thinks you humiliated her in front of everyone, and she's threatening to put a gun in her mouth."Please, just come. Do it for the three years we had. I promise, if you come, I'll make her kneel in front of you and apologize."I watched the sky darken outside the window. "Dante, you think this is my fault?"The line went dead quiet."That's not what I meant. But the Corsini elders want blood right now. If the alliance falls apart completely, it means all-out war. Help me one last time, Serena. Please."One last time. For three years, he'd used those words as a weapon. One last time, let me take her back to the safe house. One last time, let me go comfort her.And every time, I gave in."Fine," I said. "One last time."I agreed, not because I'd gone soft, but because I needed to end this three-year farce myself.

A wave of gasps went through the crowd."Falcone..." The Rossi elder stared at Gabriel. "The High Council's Ghost Don... Weren't you killed in that car bombing seven years ago?"The words sent a shock through the hall.Dante went rigid. He stared at Gabriel, every drop of color gone from his face."That's impossible..." he muttered.Elena shrieked in terror and scrambled behind Dante."Serena..." Dante swallowed hard and tried to regain control. "Let me explain. This doesn't change anything. I'm sorry. Let's just finish the ceremony."Too late."I said it's off." I raised my voice so every captain and soldier in the room could hear. "The blood pact is void. The Corsini family is at fault, so they must hand over the southern port. If they don't, the Rossi family will wage all-out war.""Are you insane?" Dante roared, his finger tightening on the trigger. In that instant, Gabriel moved. He drew his gun so fast that no one could follow the motion.Click.A cold barrel pressed against the
