Chapter 4

Author: Gilbert
Back in the hall, the final ritual was about to begin: the exchange of the family daggers.

It was an oath of blood and loyalty.

Under Mafia rules, each side's most trusted underboss had to present the dagger.

The Rossi elder behind me stood solemnly, holding the ruby dagger my mother, Lucia Rossi, had left me.

But from the Corsini side, the one who stepped forward was Elena.

The whole room erupted.

Dante had actually allowed Elena, an adopted daughter with no Corsini blood, to take his underboss's place as his sacred witness.

It was the worst possible insult to the blood pact and the Rossi family.

Dante acted like he didn't see a problem. He even gave her an encouraging look.

Elena carried the tray, gliding forward like a viper.

Just as the two daggers were about to be exchanged, she casually tilted her wrist.

The heavy steel Corsini dagger slid off and slammed down on my mother's ruby dagger.

Clang. Then came a sharp crack.

A chip had broken off the blade my mother had left me, along with a corner of the ruby in its hilt.

"Oh no," Elena cried out, covering her mouth.

"Serena, I'm sorry! The dagger was so heavy, I couldn't hold it steady... I really didn't mean to." She put on an innocent look, but her eyes glittered with a vicious challenge. "A chipped dagger can't be used for the alliance anymore, can it?"

The whole room went dead quiet.

It was the last thing my mother had left me. My anger ignited. Elena had humiliated me, stolen my man, and now she was destroying my mother's last gift to me.

And my so-called fiancé just stood there like a dead man.

I crouched down. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely pick up the damaged blade.

Dante watched me, and instead of reprimanding Elena, he frowned. "Serena." He sounded impatient. "It's just a dagger. Use the backup. Don't hold up the ceremony."

I shot to my feet.

I pulled the Beretta strapped to my outer thigh and smashed its steel grip into Elena's face.

Crack.

The sound of bone breaking.

Elena screamed and went down, clutching her nose as blood poured between her fingers.

She gaped up at me in shock. "You hit me! Dante, she hit me!"

Dante yanked the gun from his waistband and pointed it straight at my chest. "Serena, put the gun down!" Rage rolled off him. He was trying to make me back down with the full weight of his family behind him. "Even if she was wrong, you can't go crazy in front of the Council! Put the gun down. Don't make me do this!"

I looked at him. A soft laugh slipped out of me and echoed through the cavernous hall, sharp and broken. "You promised you'd respect my limits." I aimed the barrel at him. "She destroyed my mother's dagger in front of the five families, and you're pointing a gun at me?"

Something flickered in Dante's eyes, but his voice stayed deadly. "It's a goddamn knife! Elena is family to me. She made a mistake..."

"A mistake?" I cut him off, my soft laugh turning into a scoff. "You're pathetic, Dante.

"You said you loved me. But every time you had to choose, every single time, you chose her.

"And now you want me to apologize to her?"

I looked around the room.

The heads of the families had unreadable expressions.

My father was on his feet.

Vincenzo looked ready to kill.

And Elena, hiding behind Dante's legs, gave me a bloody, triumphant smirk.

Enough.

I looked at Dante and spoke up. "There's something I never told you.

"I never loved you."

Dante froze.

"You know why I picked you in the first place?

"Because three years ago, in that shootout, the way you drew your gun... reminded me so much of someone else."

I watched the color drain from his face and spelled it out for him. "You were just a cheap stand-in, Dante. And now..."

I bent down and picked up the Corsini dagger. "The alliance is off."

The moment I finished speaking, there was a soft rustle of suit fabric from the corner.

Gabriel stood up, like he'd been waiting for his cue.

He walked over, step by step.

Everyone in the room held their breath.

Someone recognized him and gasped.

He came to my side, took off his black suit jacket, and draped it gently over my shoulders. "Serena." He slid an arm around my waist. Then he looked at Dante. "As of today, she's mine."

The hall went deathly silent.

Dante went white, then gray, and the gun shook violently in his hand.

I leaned into Gabriel and breathed in that familiar cedar scent.

My devil had finally come back.

After the wedding, Gabriel and I cemented our hold on the underworld. The Rossi family and the High Council became one.Our life was full of danger, power, and an intoxicating passion.Every morning, I woke up to the rich smell of coffee.Gabriel was an early riser. He controlled half of Europe's underworld and had thousands of hardened criminals under him.But he still insisted on making my espresso himself every day.I leaned against the kitchen doorframe.I watched him in a black silk shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbows, showing the old scars crisscrossing his strong forearms."Morning, Serena." He brought the cup over and bent to kiss my forehead. To the outside world, Gabriel was the ruthless Ghost Don.To me, he was the man who would burn down a whole city just to keep me warm. One day, I finished my rounds at the port early and pushed open the door to the underground meeting hall.He was sitting at the head of the room.Kneeling at his feet was a traitor who'd leaked our

The wedding was held at the oldest estate in Sicily. It was the wedding of the century.Every boss, captain, and underboss in Europe came to bow before the new Supreme Don and his Donna.I wore a diamond-studded wedding gown, its train sweeping over a blood-red carpet.Gabriel wore a tailored black suit with a dark gold rose pinned to his lapel, the symbol of absolute power. We stood beneath the dome and exchanged our vows."Serena, pushing you out of that car seven years ago was the best decision I've ever made." Gabriel laced his fingers through mine. "I'm back now. I swear on my life, I will never let you go again. No one will ever touch a hair on your head."My vision blurred, and warmth spread through my chest.I couldn't stop the tears. But this time, they were happy ones."Gabriel, I waited seven years." I squeezed his hand back, my voice shaking but completely sure. "I love you. I have since I was 17, and I will until the day I die."We exchanged rings. Then he pulled me tight

Dante didn't believe I would really marry Gabriel. He thought it was just a power play.A bluff to make him give in.That changed when the Rossi family, with Gabriel's quiet backing, swiftly seized the Corsini family's southern port and three of its main smuggling routes.Under pressure from both sides and with nowhere to turn, Dante lost control. He tried to win me back with what little leverage he had left and memories of the past we had shared.Every day, he sent crates of uncut diamonds and antique guns to my estate. Each delivery came with a desperate letter begging for peace. He even stood outside the Rossi family's council hall all night in a downpour, swearing to my father that if I'd just come back to him, he'd send Elena's head over in a box.But I didn't care.Because we'd started planning the wedding. It wasn't just a marriage between two families. It was the crowning of the Supreme Don.Gabriel stood behind me in front of a full-length mirror. His large hand rested on my w

The streetlights cast a dim yellow glow over the hospital garden. We walked in silence until Dante stopped. "Serena, I screwed up."I shouldn't have given her the necklace. I shouldn't have let her smash your pocket watch."Give me one more chance. We'll start over."I'll send Elena away to South America. You'll never see her again."We'll redo the blood pact ceremony. No, forget that. We'll just get married! I swear to you, Serena."I stopped and looked at him.In the dim light, he was still the dangerous, handsome mob boss I'd once loved.Three months ago, those words might have gotten to me.But now I felt nothing."Dante, do you remember what you promised me when we first got together?"He hesitated."You said that in public, I'd always come first and Elena would never get in the way."And what happened? At my father's birthday party, she showed up and made a scene, claiming she was your woman. It almost turned into a shootout. You told me it was a joke."She ruined the smuggling m

Sure enough, Dante called. When I picked up, he sounded exhausted, with a trace of panic just under the surface. "Serena, come to the Corsini hospital. Elena's in bad shape. She thinks you humiliated her in front of everyone, and she's threatening to put a gun in her mouth."Please, just come. Do it for the three years we had. I promise, if you come, I'll make her kneel in front of you and apologize."I watched the sky darken outside the window. "Dante, you think this is my fault?"The line went dead quiet."That's not what I meant. But the Corsini elders want blood right now. If the alliance falls apart completely, it means all-out war. Help me one last time, Serena. Please."One last time. For three years, he'd used those words as a weapon. One last time, let me take her back to the safe house. One last time, let me go comfort her.And every time, I gave in."Fine," I said. "One last time."I agreed, not because I'd gone soft, but because I needed to end this three-year farce myself.

A wave of gasps went through the crowd."Falcone..." The Rossi elder stared at Gabriel. "The High Council's Ghost Don... Weren't you killed in that car bombing seven years ago?"The words sent a shock through the hall.Dante went rigid. He stared at Gabriel, every drop of color gone from his face."That's impossible..." he muttered.Elena shrieked in terror and scrambled behind Dante."Serena..." Dante swallowed hard and tried to regain control. "Let me explain. This doesn't change anything. I'm sorry. Let's just finish the ceremony."Too late."I said it's off." I raised my voice so every captain and soldier in the room could hear. "The blood pact is void. The Corsini family is at fault, so they must hand over the southern port. If they don't, the Rossi family will wage all-out war.""Are you insane?" Dante roared, his finger tightening on the trigger. In that instant, Gabriel moved. He drew his gun so fast that no one could follow the motion.Click.A cold barrel pressed against the
