Chapter 1

Author: Goodtale
George Dunne and I had been married for twenty-eight years. We had only one daughter, Zoe Dunne.

She had graduated from the prestigious Summit University. She had once been my greatest source of pride. Somehow, she had turned into a complete deadbeat.

Every morning, long after the sun was up, she would lie there with her eyes closed and call out, “Mom, where’s my phone?”

It was always right under her pillow.

I would pull it out and put it in her hand. Only then would she finally crawl out from under the covers.

If she wanted an orange, she would peel it for all of a few seconds before giving up.

“Mom, peel it for me.”

Whenever I told her to start sending out resumes, she would grab her phone and furiously tap away at the screen right in front of me.

“Done, Mom. I applied.”

The first time I leaned over to see what she had actually done, I was speechless.

She had been applying to random jobs on JobNest.

On one end of the spectrum were executive positions at major corporations offering seven-figure salaries.

On the other were street-cleaning jobs that barely paid enough to live on.

The worst part was that she operated on a strict apply-and-ignore policy.

It was not that recruiters were ignoring her. She was the one ignoring every message they sent.

The first time I saw her do that, I nearly blacked out on the spot.

After more than twenty years of raising her, I could not help wondering where on earth I had gone wrong.

At this rate, my daughter was well on her way to becoming a completely helpless freeloader who could barely fend for herself. It seemed like she planned to live off her parents forever.

However, useless as Zoe could be, she was also the only person in that house who genuinely cared about me.

Whenever I got home late after spending the day helping George's mother, Ruth Dunne, Zoe would be curled up on the couch waiting for me.

There would always be a bowl of my favorite chicken soup on the table, ordered for delivery just in time for me to get home.

Whenever George raised his voice at me, Zoe would be the first one out of bed, ready to give it right back to him.

“What gives you the right to talk to Mom like that?”

Over the years, George had grown colder toward me. He started coming home later and later.

Most days, it felt like Zoe and I were all each other had.

Whenever I quietly started crying, she would stumble over, half-asleep, and wipe my tears away.

Once, she ended up with snot all over her hand.

She made a disgusted face but kept wiping anyway.

Whenever I got sick, she worried about me even more than I worried about myself.

“Mom, want an ice cream bar? It’ll cheer you up, and then you’ll get better faster.”

I looked at the ice cream in her hand and smiled with resignation.

Her face immediately lit up.

“See, Mom? I told you! Ice cream makes people happy! You’re practically cured already!”

“I’ve got a cold, sweetheart. I think I’ll pass on the ice cream. I appreciate the gesture, though.”

For once, her expression turned unusually serious.

“Mom, do you think I’m completely useless? Do you ever regret having me?”

My nose stung. My eyes began to burn.

“Not for a second.”

Her face softened, as though an enormous weight had just been lifted off her shoulders.

“Thanks, Mom. Although, to be fair, I’m pretty useless right now.”

I nearly choked on the pill I was swallowing.

One afternoon, I got a text from a number I did not recognize.

The sender asked if I could meet her at the cafe near the entrance to our neighborhood.

At the bottom of the message was a name.

[Michelle Tyler.]

I knew who she was.

She had worked with George for years.

She was also the woman people at his workplace had called his “close friend” for over twenty years.

Ruth mentioned her on the phone more often than she mentioned me and Zoe combined.

However, George always brushed it off. “We work in the same office. Stop reading into it.”

I believed him.

Michelle and I had barely crossed paths in all those years.

So, when she suddenly asked to meet, every instinct I had told me this was not going to be a friendly chat.

Feeling uneasy, I sent my best friend, Kaley Mayhew, more than a dozen texts.

She was away on a business trip that day. She must have been swamped because she did not reply to any of my texts.

I glanced at Zoe’s closed bedroom door.

She was probably still asleep.

There was no point in telling Zoe and making her worry.

After all, she did nothing but eat and sleep all day. If something really was wrong, there would be little she could do about it.

If there really was something going on between Michelle and George, Zoe would probably have even less idea what to do than I did.

By the time I got to the cafe, Michelle was already waiting for me.

She was even more attractive in person than she was in photos, with her hair styled in loose, glossy waves.

When I sat down, I was still in a daze. She got straight to the point.

“Olivia, I asked you here because I want you to divorce George. It’s been years, and the kids are grown now. It’s time you stepped aside and let me have him.”

It felt as though all the blood in my body had turned to ice.

My nails dug painfully into my palms.

For a long moment, I could not utter a word.

A few people in the audience laughed.I laughed too. Little by little, my voice grew steadier. “But eventually, I learned the truth. All those things I thought made her helpless were really her attempts to protect me. She slept all day because she was up at night taking meetings with clients overseas. “She made me peel her oranges because she did not want me to realize just how much she was actually handling on her own.“She let me believe she couldn’t take care of anything, while quietly taking care of everything that truly mattered. I’m incredibly lucky to have a daughter like her. I’m sorry she had to carry so much of it alone.”I lowered the pages and looked at Zoe, who was standing in the front row.She waved at me enthusiastically. Her eyes were already red with tears.“Zoe, from now on, I’m going to learn how to protect you too. You and I, we’re going to build a good life together.”The room erupted in applause.Zoe ran up onto the stage and wrapped her arms around me

I did not go.Zoe went in my place. When she came home, she brought the final court papers with her.“The divorce is final. You got the house and the remaining marital accounts. “The six-point-seven million George spent on Michelle has been recovered and credited back to you. He also pleaded guilty in the corporate fraud case and got five years.“Michelle’s case was handled separately. She got three years for her part in the scheme.”She recited all of this in the same tone she might have used to read off a grocery list.I took the judgment from her and ran my fingers over George’s name. After twenty-eight years of marriage, all that remained between us was a court verdict with his name on it.“Did he say anything?”Zoe tilted her head and thought for a moment.“He asked me to tell you he was sorry. He said he regretted everything.”I nodded, folded the papers neatly, and put them away in a drawer.“I see. Zoe, what do you think he regrets?”Zoe leaned against me and gave

Zoe sighed.“I kept thinking that whatever else he was, he was still your husband. Maybe he’d come to his senses, and we could still have some kind of family. “Instead, he only got worse. Then, he had the nerve to bring his mistress and her son right into our home.”She looked at me. Her eyes were bright with an almost childlike hint of pride.“Mom, you don’t have to be scared anymore. I have money, a company, and an entire team behind me. “As for that promotion he’s so proud of, and all those connections he thinks he has, I know exactly where they came from. He’s not going to get away with what he did.”I opened my mouth. I still had so many questions for her. However, when I saw the exhaustion around her eyes, I could not bring myself to ask even one.She had kept all of this from me for years. She had let me believe she was a hopeless freeloader, all because she did not want me to worry.I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close.“Zoe, I’m sorry. All this time,

Still on the floor, Michelle loosened her grip on my legs and began pleading desperately. Her voice broke between sobs.I took a step back as I felt a wave of disgust rising in my stomach.“Don’t touch me.”Zoe immediately pulled me away and stepped in front of me.“Now you’re begging, Michelle? You weren’t so humble when you barged into our home with your son.“You certainly weren’t worried about Mom’s feelings when you had George trying to force her into signing those divorce papers. It’s too late.”As soon as she said that, the sound of police sirens came from the street. The sirens grew louder as they approached, then cut off somewhere below. A moment later, hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway outside. George shoved Michelle aside and rushed over to Zoe. Then, his legs seemed to give out. He sank to his knees in front of her.“Name your price! Whatever you want, I’ll pay it! Just drop the charges! Zoe, I’m your father! You can’t do this to me!”He clutched at th

“You’re right about one thing. Having an affair by itself isn’t going to cost you everything. But wasting marital assets on your mistress? That’s a very different story.”She opened one of the files and slid a page across the table toward George.“Starting four years ago, you were transferring fifty thousand dollars a month to Michelle. After you took over those projects, you doubled it to one hundred thousand. “Then, there were vacations, gifts, jewelry, and all the other extras. Altogether, you’ve spent about six-point-seven million dollars on her.”“That money came out of marital income and assets. “You secretly funneled millions to the woman you were having an affair with, and Mom’s attorney can ask the court to credit every bit of that against you when the marital estate is divided.”George’s breathing grew ragged. His chest heaved violently. “But that was my salary.”“Your salary is joint marital property.”Zoe’s tone was completely flat, as if she were reading from a

Michelle’s lips trembled. When she finally spoke, her voice cracked.“Wh-What did they say?”“They said you and George only started sleeping together four years ago. For the twenty years before that, you were the one throwing yourself at him. “George barely gave you the time of day. If you hadn’t used your son to pressure him, he never would’ve chosen you.”Michelle whipped around to look at George. Tears welled up in her eyes. “George, that’s not true, is it?”George avoided her gaze. His throat bobbed as he swallowed. His fingers tightened around the arm of the couch.Zoe kept going.“Michelle, you didn’t actually think George was with you because he loved you, did you? Take a look at the paternity test.”She rifled through the papers on the table, pulled out one document, and tossed it in front of Steve.“Steve, you’re twenty-four. Your mom told you George was your father. But over twenty years ago, George wasn’t even sleeping with her. So, how exactly could you be his s
