Chapter 2

Autor: Goodtale
Michelle looked at me with a smug, self-assured smile.

“Olivia, don’t take it personally. At work, we’re used to being direct. It saves time. I suppose it’s different when you’re a stay-at-home mom with all day to dance around the point.”

She took a sip of her drink, then added, “Also, Olivia, you really shouldn’t think of me as a stranger. I know what George likes to eat and where he spends his nights probably better than you do.”

I fought down the nausea rising in my chest and tightened my grip on the purse resting in my lap.

“If George has something to say to me, he can say it himself. You and I have nothing to discuss.”

“Oh, Olivia, there’s no need to get worked up.”

She reached out and caught my arm, then casually pulled a photograph from her purse and slid it across the table.

She tapped the face of the young man in the picture.

“Take a good look. Doesn’t he look just like George?”

My heart lurched painfully in my chest.

“George and I have been together for twenty, maybe thirty years. At the office, in bed, everywhere in between. My son is a year older than that daughter of yours who does nothing but sleep all day.”

“Twenty or thirty years? That’s not a relationship. That’s an affair. You’re his mistress!”

Michelle laughed.

Someone at the next table glanced over.

Heat rushed to my face. I wanted to disappear under the table.

Michelle, on the other hand, simply smoothed her hair and seemed even more at ease.

“His mistress? When was the last time George even wanted you? If a man spends more than twenty years wanting another woman instead of his own wife, you have to ask yourself which one of us is really the other woman.

“The one who is not loved is.”

I bit down hard on my lip.

“I am George’s wife. Legally.”

“His wife?”

“You’ve been married to him all these years, but what kind of wife have you actually been? You gave him one useless daughter and then spent your life coddling her.

“Now she’s twenty-three, unemployed, barely leaves the house, and completely useless.”

I looked straight at her.

“Michelle, whatever is going on between you and me, leave my daughter out of it.”

Something flickered across Michelle’s face.

“I’m only saying this for your own good. Keep clinging to a marriage that’s already over, and eventually your daughter will be the one embarrassed by it.”

My fingers tightened around the strap of my purse.

She pulled a document from her purse and slid it across the table toward me.

“Sign it. It’s a divorce agreement. You waive any claim to the house, the savings, and everything. You walk away with nothing.”

“Why should I?”

Michelle snorted.

“I tolerated this arrangement for years because my son was still growing up, and I didn’t want him caught in the middle. But he’s grown now, and he’s getting married. He deserves to have his family be together.

“If you step aside willingly, we can all keep this civil. But if you force this into court, the only people who are going to end up humiliated are you and your useless daughter.”

I stared at the papers. A chill spread through my entire body.

Then, Michelle suddenly smiled.

She pulled out her phone, dialed a number, and deliberately put the call on speaker.

“Ruth, it’s me. Michelle.”

Ruth answered in a warm tone I had never once heard her use with me.

“Michelle, honey. What’s going on?”

Michelle glanced at me, then softened her voice into something sweet and apologetic.

“Ruth, I couldn’t keep it quiet anymore. I met with Olivia today and told her everything. She won’t sign the divorce agreement. You’re not mad at me, are you?”

I held my breath. My nails dug into my palms.

There was a second of silence on the other end.

Just one second.

Then, Ruth’s voice came through loud and clear.

“Oh, why would I be mad at you? You did exactly the right thing. God knows how long I’ve been waiting for this.

“That woman should’ve been gone years ago, along with that spoiled, useless daughter of hers. Come over, honey. I’ll make you something nice for dinner.”

Michelle raised her chin at me with a triumphant smile.

Humiliation washed over me so completely that I started trembling.

Michelle ended the call. Then, she picked up her purse and arrogantly stared into my eyes.

“You heard her. The Dunne family stopped thinking of you as family a long time ago.”

Her heels clicked across the floor as she walked away without looking back.

I barely remembered how I made it home.

When I walked in, Zoe’s bedroom door was closed.

I locked myself in the bathroom and turned on the shower.

The sound of the water drowned out my sobs.

I finally broke down, sliding slowly down the wall until I was sitting on the floor.

I had given up my career for this family.

All these years, I had turned myself into nothing more than the family housekeeper.

If I got divorced, how was I supposed to support my daughter?

Zoe was twenty-three years old and could barely peel an orange for herself.

What would people think of her if this whole scandal came out?

If she found out that George had built an entirely separate family with another woman, what would that do to her?

That night, I carried a mug of warm milk into Zoe’s room.

As I watched her sleeping peacefully, I nearly started crying again.

A few people in the audience laughed.I laughed too. Little by little, my voice grew steadier. “But eventually, I learned the truth. All those things I thought made her helpless were really her attempts to protect me. She slept all day because she was up at night taking meetings with clients overseas. “She made me peel her oranges because she did not want me to realize just how much she was actually handling on her own.“She let me believe she couldn’t take care of anything, while quietly taking care of everything that truly mattered. I’m incredibly lucky to have a daughter like her. I’m sorry she had to carry so much of it alone.”I lowered the pages and looked at Zoe, who was standing in the front row.She waved at me enthusiastically. Her eyes were already red with tears.“Zoe, from now on, I’m going to learn how to protect you too. You and I, we’re going to build a good life together.”The room erupted in applause.Zoe ran up onto the stage and wrapped her arms around me

I did not go.Zoe went in my place. When she came home, she brought the final court papers with her.“The divorce is final. You got the house and the remaining marital accounts. “The six-point-seven million George spent on Michelle has been recovered and credited back to you. He also pleaded guilty in the corporate fraud case and got five years.“Michelle’s case was handled separately. She got three years for her part in the scheme.”She recited all of this in the same tone she might have used to read off a grocery list.I took the judgment from her and ran my fingers over George’s name. After twenty-eight years of marriage, all that remained between us was a court verdict with his name on it.“Did he say anything?”Zoe tilted her head and thought for a moment.“He asked me to tell you he was sorry. He said he regretted everything.”I nodded, folded the papers neatly, and put them away in a drawer.“I see. Zoe, what do you think he regrets?”Zoe leaned against me and gave

Zoe sighed.“I kept thinking that whatever else he was, he was still your husband. Maybe he’d come to his senses, and we could still have some kind of family. “Instead, he only got worse. Then, he had the nerve to bring his mistress and her son right into our home.”She looked at me. Her eyes were bright with an almost childlike hint of pride.“Mom, you don’t have to be scared anymore. I have money, a company, and an entire team behind me. “As for that promotion he’s so proud of, and all those connections he thinks he has, I know exactly where they came from. He’s not going to get away with what he did.”I opened my mouth. I still had so many questions for her. However, when I saw the exhaustion around her eyes, I could not bring myself to ask even one.She had kept all of this from me for years. She had let me believe she was a hopeless freeloader, all because she did not want me to worry.I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close.“Zoe, I’m sorry. All this time,

Still on the floor, Michelle loosened her grip on my legs and began pleading desperately. Her voice broke between sobs.I took a step back as I felt a wave of disgust rising in my stomach.“Don’t touch me.”Zoe immediately pulled me away and stepped in front of me.“Now you’re begging, Michelle? You weren’t so humble when you barged into our home with your son.“You certainly weren’t worried about Mom’s feelings when you had George trying to force her into signing those divorce papers. It’s too late.”As soon as she said that, the sound of police sirens came from the street. The sirens grew louder as they approached, then cut off somewhere below. A moment later, hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway outside. George shoved Michelle aside and rushed over to Zoe. Then, his legs seemed to give out. He sank to his knees in front of her.“Name your price! Whatever you want, I’ll pay it! Just drop the charges! Zoe, I’m your father! You can’t do this to me!”He clutched at th

“You’re right about one thing. Having an affair by itself isn’t going to cost you everything. But wasting marital assets on your mistress? That’s a very different story.”She opened one of the files and slid a page across the table toward George.“Starting four years ago, you were transferring fifty thousand dollars a month to Michelle. After you took over those projects, you doubled it to one hundred thousand. “Then, there were vacations, gifts, jewelry, and all the other extras. Altogether, you’ve spent about six-point-seven million dollars on her.”“That money came out of marital income and assets. “You secretly funneled millions to the woman you were having an affair with, and Mom’s attorney can ask the court to credit every bit of that against you when the marital estate is divided.”George’s breathing grew ragged. His chest heaved violently. “But that was my salary.”“Your salary is joint marital property.”Zoe’s tone was completely flat, as if she were reading from a

Michelle’s lips trembled. When she finally spoke, her voice cracked.“Wh-What did they say?”“They said you and George only started sleeping together four years ago. For the twenty years before that, you were the one throwing yourself at him. “George barely gave you the time of day. If you hadn’t used your son to pressure him, he never would’ve chosen you.”Michelle whipped around to look at George. Tears welled up in her eyes. “George, that’s not true, is it?”George avoided her gaze. His throat bobbed as he swallowed. His fingers tightened around the arm of the couch.Zoe kept going.“Michelle, you didn’t actually think George was with you because he loved you, did you? Take a look at the paternity test.”She rifled through the papers on the table, pulled out one document, and tossed it in front of Steve.“Steve, you’re twenty-four. Your mom told you George was your father. But over twenty years ago, George wasn’t even sleeping with her. So, how exactly could you be his s
