Chapter 2

Author: Splitting Spring
Memories surged again, sending chills down my spine. I instinctively recoiled to dodge Antonio's outstretched hand.

"I-I'm not—" My voice was so hoarse.

I wanted to say I wasn't pretending. Here, dodging a beating was already a small win.

But before I could finish, the door was kicked open with a loud bang.

Against the light, I saw Orfeo rushing in.

"Sofia! You know today is Emilia's birthday. Even if you want to die, don't do it today and ruin her day!"

So, that was why they'd been desperate to keep me alive. They were afraid I'd die on Emilia's birthday and ruin her day.

I wanted to laugh but had no strength. Darkness crept over my vision little by little.

When I woke up again, I was in Lombardi Manor.

I heard Orfeo's gentle coaxing from the next room. "Emilia, come on, one more bite. Just one more."

I glanced at the clock. It was already the next day. Emilia's birthday had passed, so I wouldn't ruin her day anymore.

Now, I could finally die, right?

At that thought, my eyes landed on a fruit knife not far away. I pushed myself up and tried to get out of bed.

The moment my feet hit the floor, a sharp, tearing pain shot through my private part, and I collapsed heavily to the ground.

It hurt so much. Tears spilled uncontrollably as I hugged my dirty self tight and curled into a ball.

If I died, it wouldn't hurt anymore. If I died, I could forget the pain and let my memories stop at the good times.

That thought kept me going. My arm stretched toward the knife.

The moment I yanked the tablecloth off, glass shattered everywhere, slicing my skin, but I didn't notice.

Finally, I grabbed the knife and slashed at my neck without hesitation.

My strength drained fast as blood poured out. I slumped against the wall, powerless.

I was free now.

"Silvio, I'm sorry. I can't stay by your side until your last moment."

That was my last thought.

After that, I was jolted awake by violent shaking.

As I stared up at the hospital ceiling, a cold wave of emptiness washed over me. I hadn't died.

What greeted me was Orfeo's sharp and angry voice. "Sofia!"

I turned to him blankly.

Orfeo stood at the bedside, looking like a wreck despite his white coat. His eyes were red, and his voice trembled as he screamed, "Are you crazy? You actually tried to kill yourself just to compete with Emilia for our attention? Do you know you'd be dead if I'd been a minute later?

"Emilia was right next door! She faints at the sight of blood! If you want to die, do it somewhere else!"

His yelling made me feel even more aggrieved.

In my memories, Orfeo was the most cheerful and lighthearted of the Lombardi brothers.

When I was sick and burning with fever, Antonio went to pray in the church. Meanwhile, Orfeo—who was a medical doctor—stayed up all night by my bedside. He'd tell jokes to cheer me up and bake cupcakes to make me smile.

Even when Emilia first came, he dismissed her and made his stance clear to Antonio. "Sofia's my only sister."

Until that one banquet, when Emilia suffered an allergic reaction.

After checking her over, Orfeo tested the wineglass I'd given her and found the allergen.

That was the first time he snapped at me. "Sofia! What do you have to say? You just can't stand Emilia, huh? Do you want to get rid of her so badly?"

I shook my head helplessly, unable to defend myself.

A sudden phone ring interrupted my thoughts.

When Orfeo saw the caller ID, all his anger vanished. A smile I hadn't seen in a long time took over his face.

"Emilia, don't be scared. Sofia's okay now. She wouldn't really want to die. She's just being childish. She knows you faint at blood and wanted to scare you. I've already scolded her harshly.

"Alright. I'll make you some cupcakes when I get home."

When the call ended, the gentleness on his face vanished instantly. He shot me a fierce glare.

"Emilia has been crying so much out of worry that she couldn't even eat. Her depression had just gotten better, and you almost made her relapse with this stunt.

"Stay here and think about what you've done! When you realize your mistakes, then maybe we'll think about taking you back."

With that, he gave me a harsh sedative injection and slammed the door behind him.

Watching his retreating back, I forced a bitter smile and thought, "Don't worry, Orfeo. I'll die far away. You won't have to take me back."

My gaze drifted out the window.

This was Elythra Sanatorium. Down below stretched an endless ocean.

Not bad. Dying here wouldn't scare anyone.

I grabbed the edge of the bed and slowly shuffled toward the window.

Farewell, Antonio, Orfeo, and Carlo.

As I jumped, the door opened. Carlo rushed in just in time to see it all. His face twisted with rage.

Emilia's coquettish voice, mingling with a man's low breaths, drifted through the slightly ajar door. "Hey, be gentle. I can't let those three idiots see any marks on me. Now that stupid Sofia is dead, I don't even know who to pin the blame on."I originally planned to find an excuse to have her die out there. Maybe stage a car accident and tell them she was gone. Who would've thought she'd actually drop dead right in front of them? Lucky for me, those three are as brainless as they come."Don't worry. They won't be back anytime soon. They're off to handle that bitch's funeral. It'll take them a few days."Outside the door, Orfeo grabbed Carlo's hand just as he was about to push it open.Inside, the man's breathing grew heavier."Good thing she's dead. Now you don't have to keep pretending every day to please those three guys. Anyway, with her dead and no one to testify, no one will ever find out about the dark web live stream you set up back then."Laughter echoed from inside.

After a long silence, Orfeo finally spoke, "You're saying it was Sofia who trashed your room?"Emilia didn't catch the change in his tone and replied, "Sì, it was Sofia."Orfeo's voice grew cold. "Tell me—how exactly did she do it? She can't even stand now! How did she manage to trash your room?"There was silence on the other end. After a moment, Emilia suddenly seemed to think of something and hurriedly defended herself, "She's faking her leg injury! It's not really hurt!"Orfeo gasped sharply. His fingers trembled so badly he could barely hold the phone. He ended the call immediately, and the room fell deathly quiet.Carlo snapped back to reality and muttered, "Never mind whether Sofia can stand. She's lying right here. How could she possibly trash Emilia's room?"He paused, his face paling more and more. "Emilia lied so smoothly. She must think all three of us are idiots."I nodded strongly in the air. Yes, that was exactly how she thought of them.Antonio's and Orfeo's f

Antonio snapped back to reality. His eyes turned bloodshot as he grabbed his phone and called the men he personally assigned back then. The man on the other end hesitated, then stammered, "B-Boss, you did ask us to keep your sister with us for a while until Emilia's depression got better. But the young lady you sent us wasn't your sister."Later, Emilia even messaged us, saying that woman nearly killed her. She told us to make her suffer just as long as she's still breathing. You know how we operate. We don't hold back."So, following Emilia's orders, we hired people to set up a 'stage play,' and the torture went on for three months. The guys said the woman was totally fooled. She really believed she'd been sold to Aleroth."Oh, and Emilia said you planted people in the live stream to hand out tips. The guys followed orders and forced her legs apart for the audience. Gosh, she cried so hard. I couldn't even bear to listen."Before the man finished, Antonio slammed his phone to the

Orfeo stood still, staring at me on the bed.My lips were pale, my legs were limp, and my white dress was soaked through with blood. Even the hospital bed was stained. When he'd carried me earlier, his heart had dropped. He felt dazed. When had that chubby young lady with dimples, who used to smile so brightly, turned into this?I had sunken cheeks, bones sharp to the touch, and no smile left at all.Orfeo parted his lips. His voice was so soft it was almost inaudible. "Sofia…"He sank to his knees, not daring to move any closer.Doctors and nurses filed out one by one. The last nurse walked over quietly, pulled the white sheet up, and gently covered my face. Before leaving, she patted Orfeo's shoulder. No one knew how long he'd been kneeling when a single tear suddenly splashed onto the floor. Then, another followed. His suppressed sobs grew louder until he clutched his head and wept openly. As I looked at him, memories from the past three years surfaced.Every time I got si

My consciousness drifted in midair as I took in everything before me.Carlo's face was frighteningly pale. He stared down at my body on the floor and asked in a trembling voice, "Antonio, is Sofia…"Antonio didn't even bother to listen. Frowning, he stepped past Carlo and impatiently nudged my shoulder with his shoe."Sofia, I'm counting to three. Get up. After years of running wild outside, you've learned nothing, but you've certainly mastered the art of playing dead to throw a tantrum."I curled my fingers lightly in midair. A dull ache throbbed in my chest.I looked down at Antonio. Seeing that he still wore that look of disgust, I sighed quietly.Though he held back, Antonio was still from a mafia background. One kick was all it took to send my body tumbling down the stairs like a rag doll.Blood spread quickly beneath me.As a doctor, Orfeo saw this, and his face went pale. He rushed over, scooped me up, and checked my breath and pulse."Get her to the hospital. Now!" he

After a long pause, he spat out through clenched teeth, "Take her back."They roughly threw me into the trunk. In the darkness and jostling, my consciousness started to fade.
