Chapter 2

Author: Flowering Tree
Lucia's POV

"How can I destroy Matteo?" I got straight to the point.

The man, Carlo Lombardi, narrowed his eyes at my words. Then, a smirk crossed his face before he replied, "You've got some nerve to say that out loud."

I had no intentions of beating around the bush. "Just get to the point."

Carlo drummed his fingers against the table before he finally spoke. "Someone like Matteo can't be ruined that easily. But if you can get me a map showing the Castello Famiglia's arms-traficking sites, I can make sure he pays dearly."

"Alright. I'll do it."

My decisiveness caught Carlo off guard. He froze for a beat before asking, "Aren't you afraid of what happens if Matteo finds out you've betrayed—"

"I've already tasted the price of betrayal," I said, cutting him off.

After everything I'd endured this past year, no one knew the cost of betraying him better than I did.

Before leaving, I paused in my tracks and added, "In return, you need to get me out of the Castello Famiglia."

When I returned to the villa, I saw Matteo and Gisella in the garden. I told the bodyguards to carry the shopping bags inside before I approached them slowly.

Matteo's voice drifted into my ears, carrying a gentleness so unfamiliar it almost didn't sound like him. "Alright, don't be jealous. Lucia's return isn't necessarily a bad thing. If anything, she gives us the perfect cover."

Gisella nestled against him with red-rimmed eyes. "What if she exposes our relationship?"

"She wouldn't dare." He let out a cold sneer, his eyes filled with indifference. "If she dares to run her mouth, I'll dig up those three men's remains and force her to identify them again with her own eyes. I'll make sure she never forgets that they died because of her."

The last flicker of hope vanished from my eyes as I leaned against the wall. I took out my phone and snapped a photo before turning to leave, only for my foot to catch the flowerpot beside me.

Matteo immediately turned around. "Who's there?" he snapped.

The next second, the door was pushed open. By then, I was already seated on the couch as I unwrapped the things I'd just bought.

I looked up at him in confusion. "What's wrong, Don Castello?"

Matteo's gaze lingered on me for a long moment before he asked quietly, "When did you get back?"

Pretending to be taken aback, I replied softly, "I just got home. Did something happen?"

As soon as I finished speaking, I acted as though something had just occurred to me. I reached into the pile of gift boxes and took out a tie. Then, I rose to my feet and held it out to him.

"I saw this while I was passing by. I thought it suited you, so I bought it on a whim."

Matteo gave me a long, searching look. A few seconds passed before he finally reached out and took the tie.

Just then, Gisella's voice rang out from behind him. "If we'd known the punishment chamber worked this well, you should've thrown her in there sooner to teach her a lesson."

A frown crossed Matteo's face before he snapped under his breath, "That's enough. Watch your tongue."

Matteo turned back to study my expression, as though he was hoping to find some trace of emotion there. But my face remained completely blank.

I simply lowered my head and continued sorting through the clothes I'd just bought.

It didn't take long before Matteo noticed something was off. "Why is everything here long-sleeve shirts and pants? Didn't you use to love wearing dresses?" he asked.

A faint smile crossed my face.

"People change," I said softly.

That was a lie. I never changed, but the scars covering my body had long since trapped me in long sleeves and pants.

Matteo didn't press any further. Instead, he turned around and asked the housekeeper, Paolo Romano, to prepare our dinner.

The meal was unusually quiet. So quiet that, in the end, Matteo couldn't help breaking the silence. "Why have you become so quiet now, Lucia?"

I tightened my grip on the cutlery slightly. The questioning tone in his voice reminded me of the twisted, hideous faces in the punishment chamber. All of a sudden, a wave of nausea churned in my stomach.

I lowered my eyes and forced down the discomfort before replying softly. "I'm just a little tired from shopping all day."

He didn't ask any further. Before he left, he asked Paolo to take me to the best rehabilitation therapist in the city. "There's a Commissione tonight. You don't have to wait for me," he added.

I gave a soft hum in response. Then, I casually picked up the coat beside me and handed it to him.

"Have a safe trip," I replied.

Matteo's brows furrowed slightly when his gaze dropped to the coat. For a moment, he suddenly felt as though I had become a stranger.

He was just about to speak when his phone suddenly rang.

Matteo glanced at the caller ID before turning and leaving in a hurry. It didn't take much to guess that the call was from Gisella.

But now, it no longer mattered whether it was her.

I turned and headed upstairs. Using dizziness as an excuse, I turned down the rehabilitation session before stopping outside Matteo's study.

After a brief moment of hesitation, I still entered the numbers 0902.

That was the day he'd first confessed his love to me. I hadn't held out much hope, but the door opened with a soft click.

For a moment, an inexplicable feeling washed over me. But there was no time to think. I hurried inside and rifled through the room before taking a photo of the arms-dealing map.

My gaze faltered slightly when I turned to look at the unlocked door. But the next second, the memory of the day my child was tortured to death flashed through my mind.

At the thought, I lowered my gaze and stared at the scar on my finger. Just like that, all my hesitation flew out of the window.

Carlo replied immediately after I sent the photo.

"I'll pick you up in three hours."

Instead, I simply gave the person beside me a look. The next moment, a guard stepped forward and slapped her twice across the face. Blood appeared at the corner of her mouth as she was left completely stunned. Only then did I look at her. "Insult me again, and I'll make sure you'll go without food for a day," I said with a faint smile.Gisella glared at me fiercely, but in the end, she didn't dare to make another sound. Then, I turned my gaze to Matteo. In just a few days, he'd lost all traces of his former arrogance. He stared at me for a long while before his dry lips finally slipped out an apology. "I'm sorry."A laugh escaped me before I looked at him coldly. "Don't you think it's a little too late to say that now?"With that, I turned to look at the guards. "Put them through every torture method you once u

On the other hand, he couldn't stop thinking about the inexplicable child Lucia had spoken of.After some thought, he still decided to head to the punishment chamber first. The guards hurried over to greet him with fawning smiles as soon as he arrived, only to be shoved aside."Pull up all the surveillance footage from the year Lucia was imprisoned here," Matteo ordered. The guards exchanged glances as a flicker of panic flashed across their faces.Matteo's gaze darkened, and his voice grew colder. "Don't make me repeat myself."Soon, the surveillance room fell silent as the screens lit up one by one. The footage was dim, and a figure could vaguely be seen chained in the corner as she talked to herself."Be strong, Tesoro. We can definitely get through this," Lucia whispered. In that instant, all the blood in Matteo's body seemed to freeze. The footage slowly

Lucia's POVI stopped a few steps away from Matteo. My gaze swept over him before I let out a soft, mocking laugh. "I have to say, I'm quite satisfied to see you in this state." Matteo's expression instantly darkened. "Do you know the consequences of doing this, Lucia?" he questioned."Consequences?" I repeated the word as though I'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. "I think you've misunderstood something, Don Castello. You're the one standing here today begging for a ceasefire."For a moment, he was left speechless by my words. A long silence passed before he finally clenched his jaw and asked," Why? Lucia, why did you do this?"My smile slowly faded as the breeze whipped across my face like a knife."Why?" I echoed, my eyes reddening as I looked at him. "Shouldn't I be the one asking you that?"A frown crossed his face. It was clear that he didn't understand what I meant.I kept my gaze fixed on him and enunciated each word. "Weren't you the one who betrayed me fir

Third-Person's POVMatteo glanced at the timestamp. Lucia had taken the photos before the Commissione had even convened.Did Lucia resent him for throwing her into the punishment chamber? Was that the reason why she wanted revenge? But in the past, Lucia would only throw a tantrum whenever Gisella taunted her. A few soothing words from him were all it took to smooth things over.Even after Lucia had been wronged, she had never once betrayed him. The same went for the night she'd spent with the three traitors. She never would've cheated on Matteo if he hadn't drugged her.Besides, there had been no hint of resentment in her gaze when he brought her home that day.The frown on Matteo's face only deepened as he stared at the surveillance footage. Before he could dwell on it further, the Capi in the Castello Famiglia called for another Commissione over the mole. The atmosphere was heavy and tense in the Commissione. One of the Capi immediately spoke up the moment Matteo arrived. "

Third-Person's POVGisella had her arms wrapped around Matteo's neck inside the car. Leaning in, she tried to press a kiss to his lips when he turned his face away. "How many times have I told you not to do this outside? As far as everyone else is concerned, we're still siblings," he warned.Gisella's lips pressed into a pout. Though reluctant, she settled back into her seat before muttering under her breath, "It's not like we're actually related."With that, her eyes drifted back to Matteo. "Are we going to spend the rest of our lives sneaking around like this?"Matteo's silence said enough. Gisella's eyes reddened at his reaction before tears spilled down her face.He let out a resigned sigh before comforting her. "Gisella, titles don't matter. I may not be able to make our relationship public, but you already have all my affection. As for Lucia… she may be the Donna, but that's all she has left."Only then did Gisella's tears finally stop. Just then, Paolo's call came throug

Lucia's POVTears instantly brimmed in Gisella's eyes at Matteo's words. She threw herself into his arms and sobbed softly. "I just couldn't stand how lenient you were being with Lucia. Are you still in love with her?" she choked out.A frown crossed his face. "You're overthinking it. Back then, I only drugged her to make sure the charges against those three traitors would hold. "At the end of the day, she didn't deserve such a harsh punishment. Besides, she wouldn't have broken down if you hadn't sent her the condom just to provoke her," he said. His words only deepened Gisella's grievance. "So, are you trying to pin the blame on me? If that's the case, you might as well throw me into the punishment chamber too!"Gisella made a show of leaving as soon as she finished speaking, only for Matteo to grab her and pull her straight into his arms."Alright, don't make a scene. How could I bear to send you to a place like that?" he coaxed her.The revelation left me reeling in sho
