Chapter 2

Author: Yearning
Heavy rain hammered against the car windows. Long streams of water blurred everything into a gray smear. It mirrored my own restless, burning heart.

The caretaker said Dad had collapsed after returning from the celebration. Before being rushed into the emergency room, he had insisted they not tell me so I wouldn't worry.

When the 11th call went straight to voicemail, my heart felt like it had been dropped into the rain and gone ice-cold. With no other choice, I called the Beta, Mark Sylvester.

The call quickly connected, and I got straight to the point.

"Where's Ethan? I need him to contact the healer we used last time. My dad's heart condition has flared up, and he's in emergency care."

Mark's voice came back at once, though too polite and cold for my liking. "I'm sorry, Ms. Clarke, but Ms. Stonehart just gave the instructions. She said we're no longer allowed to assist you with any personal matters, including contacting Mr. Thornfield, after you signed the mate bond termination.

"Unfortunately, I'm only following orders. You know how much Mr. Thornfield favors her. I can't possibly go against her. Why don't you try contacting him yourself?"

"I can't," I replied flatly, so desperate that my voice had turned strangely calm.

"I understand. But you know how much he dotes on her," Mark said, his tone carrying a trace of pity. "Why don't you visit them in person? They're heading to…"

I didn't wait for Mark to finish. I turned the car around and drove straight to that address. I knew that place far too well because Chloe Stonehart had invited me there more than once.

When Chloe opened the door, she was wearing my night robe, the silk one Ethan had given me last year. My initials were still embroidered at the collar. Now, it hung on her body, mocking me like a banner of victory.

"Well, look who we have here. It's our noble Luna."

She leaned against the doorframe, blonde curls cascading over her shoulders. "How did you end up looking like a soaked hyena?"

Her gaze dropped to my dripping hair, and a cold smile curled on her lips. "Kneel, or don't even think about seeing Ethan."

The next second, footsteps echoed from down the hall. Ethan strode over with his robe hanging open at the chest, fresh bite marks staining his neck. He frowned when he saw me and wrapped an arm around Chloe's waist without thinking.

"What are you doing here again?" he questioned, shielding her as if I were something filthy that needed to be kept at bay.

Dad's pale face swam before my eyes, so I swallowed the metallic taste rising in my throat. "My dad's having a heart attack. I need that healer now."

Chloe tightened her fingers around Ethan's sleeve, looking wronged and pitiful. "Ethan, she's doing this on purpose. She's using that old man to threaten you so you'll go back with her!"

"Chloe, enough," he interrupted her, looking at me. "Isabelle, if you really care about your dad, you should learn how to surrender."

The rain roared so loud it nearly drowned everything else. I watched how his arm shielded Chloe, how she smirked, and how soaked to the bone and miserable I looked in the foyer mirror.

When my knees hit the cold marble floor, I heard my pride shatter. The words scraped out of my throat. "Please… Save my dad."

At that, Ethan finally relaxed. With an arm around Chloe, he condescended to make the call to Mark. "Bring the healer Ms. Grey requested to the werewolf hospital."

He even called me Ms. Grey, as if our years of marriage had never existed. To him, I was nothing more than a troublesome stranger.

I didn't look at him again. I stood up and walked back into the rain-soaked night.

On the way to the hospital, my thoughts drifted back to the year Ethan and Chloe had known each other. At first, I hadn't taken her seriously at all. She came from nothing, just an Omega serving drinks at a trendy werewolf cafe.

I thought Ethan had simply lost focus for a moment in our long marriage… until Chloe openly sent me messages meant to humiliate me. I showed those texts to him.

Calmly, he had said, "She's young. You're the Luna—you should give way to her."

That was when I realized Chloe wasn't as harmless as she seemed. Even then, I still didn't take her seriously, not until she pushed me so far that I lost my pup.

Ethan said it was because my body was too weak and had nothing to do with Chloe. Only then did real fear set in.

I started to look into her past, and that was when I learned the truth. She hadn't won him over through schemes or tricks. She had been his schoolmate back in high school.

During the years when Ethan was at his lowest, cast aside by his own family, she had brought him leftover pizza for three years straight. That small kindness stayed with him until then, to the point that he was even willing to dissolve a mate bond for her.

The moment I learned the truth, pain tore through my chest.

When I arrived at the werewolf hospital, the emergency room light was still on. I slid down against the wall and sat on the floor, the chill eating me alive.

Suddenly, another memory surfaced. On a winter night in the senior year of college, Ethan's voice cracked over the phone. "I owe them two million dollars, Isabella. Let's just break up."

That night, I knocked on Dad's study door, took the life fund he had prepared for me, and handed Ethan the check. His eyes were red as he pressed my hand to his chest.

"Isabella, I'll spend my whole life loving, protecting, and repaying you."

His whole life, he said.

I slowly curled my fingers, my nails digging into my palms again. His life was shorter than the shelf life of a frozen pizza, huh?

Since then, I had lived a life rich in both money and time.I turned Dad's manor into a small werewolf history museum. Inside were the books and manuscripts he had collected over his lifetime.I also took over his unfinished research. In the second year, I published "A Study of the Evolution of Social Structures in Northern Wolf Packs".The book earned praise in academic circles. More importantly, my name, Isabella Clarke, was engraved on the Radiant pack's Wall of Honor. It stood there on its own, without the name of any Alpha beside it, without any mate's title attached. I was no longer someone's daughter or someone's mate. I was my own mark.…50 years later, on a rainy morning, Ethan was released from prison. Before his release, he sent me a thick letter. The handwriting was messy, but every line was filled with regret and foolish hope."I know I was wrong, Isabella. Please give me another chance. I'll rise again and spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Let's go ba

Due to my early preparation, Ethan never walked out of the werewolf prison again. Under my control, his company filed for bankruptcy in just 15 days. A month later, he was sentenced to 50 years. When the verdict came down, I didn't feel much joy. After all, Dad was already gone. As I thought of him and started crying again, Chloe showed up.Her face was bruised, her body covered in red and purple marks. She knelt before me, crying and begging me to save her. She said the debt collectors were beating her half to death.Honestly, she looked pitiful. So, I gave her a contact number, bestowing her a choice. She could either stay in the pack or leave.Just as I expected, Chloe chose to leave the pack. When I heard the news, I almost laughed. She really was stupid, wasn't she? I couldn't believe someone of her caliber had killed Dad.She had once pushed me into a corner where I couldn't fight back, but retribution would ultimately catch up to her. Within the pack, I had to follow the ru

Early the next morning, my lawyer sent me everything he had dug up. I submitted it straight to the pack court. Surprisingly, there was a turn of events.I didn't know if Chloe's loss of the pup had stirred Ethan's conscience, but he actually went through a marking ceremony with her. When I heard the news, I laughed.I had thought I would need to deal with Chloe myself, but this was even better. Now, Ethan could rot in prison while she drowned in debt outside. Perfect.Ethan had barely finished marking Chloe when he was arrested for bribery and tax fraud. The shock on his face when they took him was almost comical. She clung to his hand, her eyes wide with disbelief.I stood at a distance and savored their fear. Only after Ethan was dragged away and Chloe was left frozen in place did I step out of the car and walk over. I looked at her. Her face was bloodless, her hair a mess."What a tragedy," I said. "You ruined yourself for him and still don't realize you've become the scapegoat

That night, the she-wolf that I had arranged to get close to Ethan finally made her move. She didn't need to do much—just added a little something to his drinks, and he voluntarily slept with her.Naturally, Chloe caught them in bed. A spectacle happened that night, with three werewolves fighting each other. To protect the she-wolf, Ethan shoved Chloe and caused her to lose the pup.According to my plan, Chloe had to lose her pup one way or another. It was either Ethan or that she-wolf who would do it.I was standing outside the hotel then. I watched Ethan come out in a bathrobe, holding Chloe in his arms. She was covered in blood as he carried her into the ambulance. The scene dragged me back to a year ago. That was when I finally managed to conceive a pup.Chloe had sent me a video of herself sleeping with Ethan. I had had signs of recurrent miscarriage, so the shock from her provocations pushed my body over the edge. I lost the pup.I cried to Ethan, showing him the video, but

Ethan never contacted me again. I was sure Chloe had thrown a fit that day. Honestly, I was glad about it.Finally, the day came to pick up the official mate bond termination certificate. Ethan showed up alone. The joy he had when we signed the preliminary papers was gone, and I knew exactly why.I had arranged for a she-wolf dressed like I had been in college to "accidentally" bump into his car. He quickly got involved with her.I had the she-wolf add Chloe's contact and, just like Chloe used to do to me, send all the photos and videos. I didn't see it myself, but I could imagine just how spectacular the chaos between Chloe and Ethan had been lately. She had no brains, just impulses and unregulated emotions. The she-wolf only sent a few clips and photos, and she had been losing it, lashing out at him nonstop.Eventually, Ethan blew his top. I even heard the neighbors complain to the patrol that night. It was funny how the tables had turned. Back then, I had been the one fighting

The next morning, I went to the pack court. As soon as I arrived, Ethan came in with Chloe, hand in hand. He saw me in a black coat with a white flower pinned to my chest and didn't even think before scolding me."What's with the change of style? It's terrible. You look like you're attending a funeral."This had been his habit all year. Whenever I displeased him, he would put on that Alpha stance and lecture me as if I were beneath him.I laughed sarcastically. "Well, I am attending the funeral for our mate bond."I didn't spare them a glance and walked straight into the courtroom. By the time I came out, half an hour had passed. As soon as I stepped outside, Ethan grabbed my arm. "Where are you staying now? I'll send you."I used to adore it when he touched me. Now, his grip made my stomach turn. I yanked my arm free. "That's none of your business."Without sparing him another glance, I headed toward the parking lot.For the next few days, Ethan didn't contact me. Then, two w
