Chapter 2

Author: luke
I stopped what I was doing and looked at Luca's anxious face, keeping my own expression cool.

"You must have heard wrong. He was probably calling for Christine."

Luca suddenly looked embarrassed. He stammered, unable to answer.

But I went anyway. I didn't want innocent people caught up in the mess between Nolan and me.

Nolan was already awake when I got there.

His shoulder was wrapped in bandages and his face was pale. When he saw me come in, he gave me a tender smile.

He reached for my hand but accidentally strained his injured shoulder.

He hissed in pain. "Aria, you came. I was too cruel to you before. Are you still mad at me about Christine?"

Before, I would have thrown myself into Nolan's arms in tears and told him how scared I was of losing him.

But now, I just looked at him quietly. "I'm not mad, Nolan."

"I lied to you, Aria," Nolan explained patiently, his expression gentle and apologetic. "I've been working for the mafia all along. Those injuries I got at the docks weren't from work. They were from fights over territory. I wasn't the Don yet."

His warm gaze stirred something in my numb heart. The explanation was seven years too late, but I had to admit I still couldn't bring myself to give up on him.

Nolan took my hand anyway and looked at me earnestly.

"Aria, Matthew helped me become Don. He died for me. I can't just abandon his wife."

For a moment, I felt dazed. This supposedly loyal Don reminded me of the dependable husband I'd once known.

But after seven years of lies and that traumatic labor, I couldn't face him. I took a deep breath. When I spoke, I sounded defeated.

"Christine is your best friend's widow. Of course you should take care of her.

"You don't need to use your injury to test me. I'll do as I'm told. But I want my baby."

Nolan was silent for a long time. In the end, he agreed to talk Christine into it.

I couldn't deny it. Deep down, I still had hope. I wanted so badly to go back to the happy life we'd had before.

But that night, Nolan never came.

Instead, Christine showed up at my house in a bulletproof car.

She brought top-grade Iranian saffron, a case of the finest Wagyu beef, more supplements and expensive gifts than I could count, and a white case packed with dollar bills.

Christine spoke in a falsely sweet voice. "Aria, thank you for being willing to give me the baby. Please accept these gifts."

I stared hard at her, so angry my voice shook. "I never agreed to let you take my baby."

A smug smile spread across Christine's face. She crouched beside my bed and put on a sweet voice. "Aria, my husband and my child both died because of Nolan. Now this baby is the only thing holding me together. I can't live without him.

"You'll help me, won't you?"

I couldn't stop myself. I grabbed the gift box beside me and threw it at her. "Get out! You think you can buy my baby with this stuff?!"

The box struck Christine's temple. Her mask slipped. She stood up and barked at her bodyguards to hold me down.

I fought back, screaming at them to get away from me.

Christine took off her heels, gripped my chin, and leaned close, her voice cruel. "Don't worry, Aria. I won't leave a single mark on you."

Then Christine kicked me hard in the stomach, and I collapsed to the floor in pain. She was clearly enjoying herself. I struggled to sit up and tried to get out of the room.

But Christine grabbed me by the hair, and all I could do was twist and fight.

As we struggled, Christine flung me aside. My back slammed into the corner of the table, knocking the milk bottle to the floor, where it shattered.

I landed hard on the broken glass. Pain shot through me, making my scalp tingle, and I felt warm liquid run down my back.

My vision darkened, but I could make out Nolan through the haze.

At Nolan's words, the fragile, pleading look disappeared from Christine's face. She sat on the floor in a daze, tears running down her face. After a while, she burst out laughing."Aria was right, Nolan. You really are a cruel man."Christine flashed a twisted grin, as if to punish Nolan for his coldness.Still crying, she gave Nolan a cruel smile. "Aria didn't hurt her back in an accidental fall. I did that to her. I had my bodyguards hold her down while I beat her. I kicked her hard in the stomach, too."You didn't know that, did you, Nolan? Even then, Aria still believed you'd give her baby back." She laughed aloud."I'm not the only one who hurt Aria, Nolan. You did too. You made me like this. You got Aria killed!"Christine's words shattered Nolan's composure. His eyes blazing, he grabbed Christine by the throat and roared, "It was you. You used my guilt to fool me. All those years, you were only pretending to be weak. You made me hurt Aria."But Christine just looked at Nolan and

Nolan buried himself in work and the constant struggle with his rivals. Little by little, his grief over losing Aria eased.A few months later, Christine made a suggestion. "Darling, it's time to let everyone know you have an heir. We should throw him a lavish party. Aria would be happy watching from heaven."Looking at the adorable baby in Christine's arms, Nolan smiled and agreed. At the party, Christine held Ethan as she chatted with the wives of the rich and powerful. She was elegant and gracious, as if she really were the Donna of the Harris family. But halfway through the party, Luca came to find Nolan, his face grim."Don, Owen finally cracked and told us everything. The person who hired him to kidnap Mrs. Walsh wasn't the Donna."Nolan's face darkened at the news. He took Luca to the lounge off the back garden.Christine had overheard them. Her face went white, and she couldn't stop trembling.Convinced that Aria was dead, Christine had been so caught up in her own happiness th

Nolan picked up Christine, who was trembling, and carried her upstairs."Christine, don't be scared. You're safe now. No one here is going to hurt you or the baby."Red-eyed and crying, Christine pressed closer to Nolan. "Nolan, Aria's lost her mind. She actually used the baby to set us up. She wants us dead. She's terrifying."Nolan stroked Christine's hair tenderly and held her tight. "Don't be scared. I'll bring Aria back and make her pay."Nolan called for Luca. "Luca, bring Aria to me."Luca hesitated, looking nervous. "Don, she went over the cliff during the shootout. We caught Owen. The search team is already out on the water, but they haven't found the Donna yet."Nolan's head jerked up in disbelief. He'd never imagined anything would happen to Aria."Send more people to keep looking. Even if you can't find her alive, bring me her body."After Luca lef

After Nolan and Christine left, I stayed in the hospital alone to recover. At first, the pain kept me awake every night.Later, I spent each of those painful nights getting my divorce papers in order.I hadn't brought my phone to the hospital, so I used a hospital phone to call a lawyer and have the divorce petition filed. I also asked the lawyer to submit papers waiving any claim to our marital property or spousal support. That way, the judge would sign off on the divorce quickly. The moment it was final, I would leave this place for good. One night, when the wound on my back had almost healed, Nolan stormed into the hospital, furious. His face was red with rage. He grabbed my arm and yanked me out of bed."Nolan, what are you doing?!"I struggled, but with my back still injured, I barely had the strength to resist him.Nolan leaned down, his eyes bloodshot. "Look what you've done, Aria. You actually had someone kidnap Christine."Christine just told me everything on the phone. You're

When he saw I was awake, Nolan quickly took my hand.I didn't have the strength to pull away, so I forced out the words. "Nolan, what about your promise? My baby..."Nolan let go of my hand. He turned his head away and wouldn't look me in the eye."Aria, let's just... pretend we never had this baby. Christine needs the respect that comes with being my child's mother. It's the only way my men will willingly protect her."Besides, Aria," Nolan said, his voice taking on a commanding edge, "Christine gave you her blood. She saved your life. Think of this as paying her back."Nolan's words shattered the last of my illusions. The girl who'd fallen in love with him seven years ago had been laughably stupid! When he saw the stubborn, bitter look in my eyes, Nolan frowned. His tone was final. "Aria, I'll give you anything except that baby. Once you've recovered, I'll make it up to you."I closed my eyes. I didn't want to look at him anymore.Years ago, a gang of street punks cornered me in an a
