Chapter 3

Author: Springstroke
"Ah!" Sophie let out a performative cry, then slowly and deliberately collapsed onto the ground. "Help me up. My leg injury is acting up again."

Hayden immediately turned back.

Sophie insisted that he carry her. He laughed and scolded her for being dramatic, but he still obediently crouched down.

I let out a cold sneer and turned away. I found a spot where I couldn't hear their voices and sat down.

I didn't know how much time had passed until someone yelled, "The meteor shower is about to start!"

Everyone quickly gathered to wait for it. When Hayden didn't see me, he pushed through the crowd to find me.

"Are you mad?" he asked cautiously.

When I stayed silent, he smiled and tried to comfort me. "Don't think too much. Sophie and I grew up together. We're just really good friends. We're here tonight specifically to bring you to see the meteor shower. Don't you like taking pictures? Come on. I'll take pictures for you."

I liked photography. However, after Hayden and I got together, he no longer let me take freelance jobs, saying it was a waste of time.

When I saw him soften his tone like that, I pursed my lips and let him take a few photos anyway.

"Let's take a picture together and post it on Instagram," I said casually.

Hayden lowered his head, looking guilty. "You know my mom is pretty traditional. She doesn't like me posting pictures like that online."

I hadn't had much expectation anyway, so I just responded with a calm "Mmm".

Just then, someone called Hayden over to help move things. He answered, then handed me his phone before leaving.

"The bad woman posted on Instagram. Those bad people are bullying you, Mom." Daisy paced anxiously in circles, whining under her breath.

I opened Instagram. The first post I saw was Sophine's nine-photo collage. In the center was a picture of her and Hayden wearing matching outfits. The background was the same place we had just been at minutes ago.

Hayden had liked it and commented, "You're welcome for the new content."

My hand trembled as I scrolled through Sophie's Instagram account. Every single post had Hayden in them, and the comment sections were full of mutual friends teasing them.

"When are you guys finally going to step out of the friend zone and start dating?"

"You're so compatible!"

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Love is in the air."

Sophie replied, "Don't say that! I'll get shy."

The further I scrolled, the tighter my chest felt. There were countless posts revealing countless private meetups I hadn't known about.

I swallowed my anger and took a screenshot. I edited a post and posted it from my Twitter account with tens of thousands of followers with the caption, "Countdown to breakup".

Without checking the sudden surge of notifications on Twitter, I walked straight over to Hayden, intending to talk to him properly. However, I saw Sophie pressed tightly against his face, peering at his phone.

"Didn't your mom teach you to keep your distance from the opposite sex?" I said, rolling my eyes at Sophie.

"Come on, Maeve. I already said we're just bros. You can't expect me to stop hanging out with my bro just because he's dating you, right?" Sophie replied.

I chuckled. "You call yourself a 'bro,' but I don't see you going through a gender change."

"Maeve Sullivan, that's enough!" Hayden snapped, raising his voice. Then, he immediately softened it again. "Let's just watch the meteor shower first. You're overthinking this. If you're uncomfortable, we can talk about it later."

I shook off his hand and stepped a few feet away from him.

"Meteor shower! Everyone, make a wish!"

I closed my eyes, wishing that I could break up with Hayden peacefully. After all, we'd been together for two years. I didn't want things to end badly.

"Mom, look! The bad woman's hand is inside the scumbag's jacket!"

My heart jolted. I opened my eyes to see that Hayden's jacket was visibly bulging.

I asked in disbelief, "What are you two doing?"

"I know what Sophie did was wrong. I can apologize… If you take the posts down, I'll give you your things."I laughed softly. "Are you negotiating with me? You know exactly how outrageous her mistake was, yet you're asking me to forgive her? And why are you the one apologizing on her behalf? Give me my things. Don't make me hate you." I held out my hand.Hayden hesitated, avoiding my gaze.My patience ran out. I pulled my hand back and turned to leave.Panicked, he stopped me. After a brief pause, he took out a box. It was that same necklace again.I laughed in exasperation. "Are you insane? You're recycling that secondhand necklace?"Unable to meet my eyes, he sounded guilty as he spoke. "I bought this for you, but you didn't take it last time… Sophie bought hers herself. You have to believe me…"I narrowed my eyes, staring straight at him. "You're not… actually going bankrupt, are you?"He wiped his face and said with difficulty, "Sophie was wrong, but she's my friend. I ca

It was a photo of me cornered by thugs in an alley."Looks can be deceiving. This woman looks so innocent, but it turns out she was having an orgy in the street!""Who knows what kind of twisted photos she keeps in her camera… I hope her studio shuts down!""As a woman myself, I think she's disgusting.""I followed her back when she was a nobody. I never thought she'd be this vile. I'm unfollowing her."The few comments defending me were quickly drowned out by the flood of insults.I opened my private messages, only to find them filled with filth, harassment, and probing questions.I trembled with rage. My deepest pain had been dragged into the light and turned into a public joke."It's the evil woman! Last time, she did this after you died. This time, she's two months early." Daisy whimpered in my arms.I scratched her chin gently.Every wound Sophie had inflicted on me and Daisy, I would return, one by one."Stay offline for now. Let me handle it." Oliver's calm but firm v

My old social media account, the one with tens of thousands of followers, started gaining fans again as soon as I resumed posting. On Valentine's Day, Oliver and I had already agreed to go out after work. Just as I was about to close up, Daisy suddenly leapt from my arms and barked furiously at the door. "Scumbag and evil woman! Both of you stink!"I frowned and stood up."Hey, this studio's in a pretty nice area.""The woman you picked up off the street looks sweet and innocent, but who knows which sugar daddy she latched onto to afford this place." Sophie's shrill voice rang out again.I was about to shut the door in their faces when Sophie hooked her arm through Hayden's and stepped inside first. Squinting, she scanned the room, touching the furniture every now and then. Before I could speak, Daisy was already snarling at them. "Ugh! Why is this damn dog still here? Get lost!" Sophie clung to Hayden, kicking at Daisy nonstop.Daisy nimbly snatched her shoe and tossed it o

Hayden had set up a table full of dishes. When he saw me walk in, he came over as if nothing had happened. His reproachful tone carried a trace of affection. "Where have you been the past couple of days? You didn't tell me anything, and you didn't reply to my messages."Come eat. I bought your favorite cake, and I even got you a gift. But you have to finish dinner before you can see it." He winked at me.I glared at him, irritated. "What are you on about? We've already broken up!""Don't be mad. Eat first. I spent two hours cooking," Hayden said with a steady smile, reaching out to pull me toward the table.I stepped back, glaring at him coldly. "I'll say it one more time. We're done. I just came back to get my things."The perfect smile of his mask finally cracked slightly. "I didn't agree to that," he said, unfazed. "If you're angry, then I'll apologize. But you're at fault here too."I looked at him, both shocked and furious."In the end, all of this started because of that d

"Oliver confessed his feelings, and Mom heard it! It's different from our last life. Mom won't get sick this time!"Before the heat on my face could fade, my phone suddenly buzzed with a notification. I hurriedly opened it like I was grabbing onto a lifeline."What do you even like about her?"I'd forgotten to lower the volume, and Sophie's mocking voice rang out loud and clear. On the screen, she and Hayden lay on the bed under the same blanket, close enough to make me feel sick."She's obedient and good marriage material. My mom likes that kind of woman—gentle and traditional." Hayden's voice was muffled, but I heard every single word.My hands trembled uncontrollably, but I forced myself to keep watching."She doesn't look that obedient," Sophie scoffed. "Didn't she used to like photography? Would your mom even allow her to go out and show her face like that?""I already made her quit ages ago." Hayden sounded smug. "But honestly, the first time I saw her in the park, she was

Holding Daisy tightly in my arms, I got into Oliver's car.Daisy kept licking my hand affectionately, whimpering softly. "I hate to see you cry, Mom. It makes me want to cry too…"I stroked Daisy's head while kissing it again and again. My heart ached. Tears streamed down my face as scenes of how I first met Hayden flashed through my mind.He had reached out to me when I was at my most helpless. I'd thought that I'd never get the chance to repay him. Later, I started seeing him every day at the coffee shop where I worked. He would always order the same most expensive drink, then sit quietly in the corner all day.My colleagues teased me. "That handsome guy looks like some rich prince. He's been coming here every day… Is he pursuing you?"I kept my head down, focusing on my work. "Rich people care about having matching social statuses. Why would someone like that come looking for a partner in a coffee shop?""I am pursuing you." Hayden suddenly appeared, blushing and smiling shyly
