Chapter 5

Penulis: Peachy
Colter's POV

I waited in the car for a solid hour.

She’s never a minute late. This is payback. For last night. She's putting me in my place.

"Go see what the hell she's doing in there," I barked at Tony.

Tony started to get out, but I changed my mind.

"Forget it. I'll go myself."

I took the steps two at a time and slammed the heavy bronze doors of the church open.

Empty.

Just a few old nuns wiping down the pews.

"The lady who just came in. Where is she?" I grabbed the first priest I saw, a man about to snuff out some candles. My voice was rough, ragged with impatience.

Startled, the priest pointed to a side door.

"The woman in the trench coat? She lit a candle and left through the side. Said she was in a hurry to get to the airport."

The airport?

That one word—airport—slammed into my skull like a sledgehammer.

"What did you say?" I snarled, grabbing the priest's collar. "What airport?"

He shook his head, trembling. "I... I don't know."

I let him go, spun around, and stormed out of the

Zora's POVA private hospital in Sicily.Lorenzo was in the ICU for a full week.I never left the hospital. I sat by his bed every day, holding his cold hand."Wake up, Lorenzo," I'd whisper to his unconscious form. "I said yes. I'll be your Donna. But you have to wake up and marry me."On the evening of the seventh day, his fingers twitched."Doctor!" I screamed, running to the door. "He's waking up!"Lorenzo slowly opened his eyes. He was weak, but he was lucid. He saw my swollen eyes and weakly raised a hand to touch my cheek."I... I thought it was a dream," his voice was hoarse. "You really... want to marry me?""Yes," I clutched his hand. "I do."Three months later, I was back in New York to handle some loose ends. The mansion I'd lived in for six years was empty, an FBI seal still on the door.I stood outside, feeling nothing. No nostalgia, no sadness. It was never a home."Zora?"A familiar, yet strange, voice came from behind me.I turned and saw a gaunt man.Unshaven, dressed

Zora's POVI was afraid to fully trust Lorenzo's feelings for me.After all, I'd been betrayed before. Six years of love had vanished into thin air.But now, we were in Angola. The African sun was a brutal flame. I sat in an armored truck, holding a freshly mined blood diamond."Twelve carats, perfect clarity," I said, examining the priceless stone through a loupe. "This shipment can wash fifty million."Lorenzo sat beside me, negotiating in Portuguese with an Angolan diamond merchant. This was our first real business trip together. No longer him protecting me. Now, we were fighting side-by-side."Done," Lorenzo said, shaking the other man's hand. He turned to me. "We can go home now, Donna."Donna.For three months, he'd called me that, as if I were born to hold the title. The convoy pulled out of the diamond mine, heading for the airport.I leaned my head on Lorenzo's shoulder, watching the vast African landscape fly by."Do you regret it?" I asked."Regret what?""Giving the fate of

Zora's POVThe Venetian night air, salty from the sea, washed away the smell of blood from the ballroom.Lorenzo's private yacht was anchored silently in the middle of the canal.I stood on the deck, his suit jacket draped over my shoulders, carrying his scent of cedar and his warmth. In the distance, neon lights flickered, just like Colter's crumbling world."What are you thinking about?"Lorenzo came up behind me and handed me a glass of liquor.Straight whiskey. An adult's cure."I was just wondering if that makes me cruel," I said, taking the glass but not drinking. "Watching him broken on the floor... I felt nothing.""That's not cruelty, Zora. That's healing."Lorenzo wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin gently on the top of my head.It was an incredibly dangerous, yet incredibly safe, embrace. He could snap my neck in a second, but instead he just held me with a heart-stopping tenderness."Do you want me to finish him for you?" he asked, as if talking about t

Zora's POV"Mr. Giordano," I said, my voice cold as I stared at the hand gripping my arm. "Watch your mouth. I took what I was owed.""Owed? You're my fiancée! Everything you have is mine!" Colter roared, his other hand moving toward the small of his back—going for his gun. "You're coming back with me. Now. Or I'll turn this place into a morgue."The guests around us screamed and scattered. The old me would have been terrified. But looking at him now, I just found him pathetic."Touch her," Lorenzo said, moving between us. "I dare you.""This is between me and my woman. Stay out of it!" Colter had completely lost it. He jerked his gun up, the black barrel pointing right between Lorenzo's eyes.In that same instant, dozens of guns clicked all around the ballroom.Lorenzo's men.But I didn't hide behind Lorenzo. From the high slit of my dress, I pulled the gun Lorenzo gave me.I racked the slide. The click-clack was deafening in the silence. Then I pressed the cold muzzle to his jaw.Col

Zora's POVI stood on the tarmac of the private airfield, the sea breeze blowing through my long hair.No gunpowder. No bitter whiskey. No cheap, cloying perfume.Just the salty, free air of the Mediterranean.A silver Maserati pulled up, and a man got out.Lorenzo Falcone.I'd seen his picture a hundred times, but seeing him in person was something else.He was taller than Colter. More elegant. And far more dangerous. His gray eyes were sharp. A wolf's eyes. But when they met mine, the predator in them softened, replaced by a gentleman’s charm."Miss Ariana," he said, walking towards me. He didn't shake my hand. Instead, he brought it to his lips and kissed the back of it. "Welcome to Sicily."From Colter, a gesture like that meant possession. From Lorenzo, it was a show of respect."Thank you for the invitation, Mr. Falcone.""Call me Lorenzo," he said, opening the car door for me. "We're about to be partners. No need to be so formal."A partner. Not property. Not an asset. Not some
