Chapter 3

Author: Ellie C
The formula arrived soon after. Gabriel followed the instructions, checking the water temperature and measuring everything exactly.

But after two feeds, Joseph started spitting up. Then he cried until his little face was red.

Gabriel paced with him in his arms and spent the afternoon looking things up.

“It takes time to adjust to formula. I asked the doctor. He said to give it three days. Don't worry.”

At one in the morning, Joseph’s forehead felt hot. I checked his temperature. 102.7°F.

I picked him up and rushed to the next room. Gabriel was sitting beside Aaron’s bed, helping him drink some water.

“Gabriel, Joseph’s fever is almost 103. We need to get him to the hospital. Now.”

He stood at once and reached for Joseph, telling the guards outside to get the car ready.

Then Aaron suddenly knocked over the glass beside his bed.

His mouth opened as if he were trying to speak. His body went rigid, and he fell back against the pillow. His arms and legs began to jerk.

Celeste screamed and rushed to him, calling his name.

Gabriel's hand froze in midair. He glanced at me once, then made his choice.

“Get Aaron to the ER. Now!” he told the guards. Then he turned to me. “Nora, take Joseph to the hospital. The maid and the guards will go with you. I'll call a pediatrician and have him meet you there.”

“What about you?”

“Aaron's lips are turning blue. I have to go with him.”

He was already calling the doctor, but he still took a moment to reassure me.

“You're a doctor too. You know what to do. I'll come as soon as I can.”

He sounded so calm. He had an answer for everything.

I stood in the hall with Joseph in my arms and remembered the day I'd fallen. He'd been just as calm when he'd tapped to confirm he'd seen my alert.

There was someone waiting for us at the hospital, just as he'd promised.

But Joseph cried himself hoarse when they drew his blood. I held his tiny hand still while my C-section incision ached.

An older woman with white hair saw me struggling with him and steadied my bag.

“His daddy couldn't come?”

I gave a bitter smile. “He's busy saving someone else's child.”

She paused, then shook her head sadly.

“Honey, you've got your whole life ahead of you. Think about what's best for you and that baby.”

Gabriel didn't arrive until the next morning. He brought breakfast. His shirt was wrinkled and his eyes were bloodshot. He clearly hadn't slept either.

He looked over Joseph's test results and let out a long breath.

“Thank God Joseph's all right.”

Then he looked at me.

“We almost lost Aaron last night. They found a tumor in his brainstem. The doctors say they can't cure it. He doesn't have much time.”

He sat beside the bed and took my hand.

“Nora, at tomorrow's dinner, I want to name Aaron my interim heir.”

For a moment, I couldn't speak. I looked down at Joseph on the hospital bed, then slowly pulled my hand away.

“And if I say no?”

His face hardened.

“My brother died saving me. His only son is dying, and I want to give him and his mother a little comfort. Is that really too much to ask?”

I stared at him. Everything I'd wanted to ask stuck in my throat.

It took me a while to speak.

“So you weren't asking me.”

Gabriel was losing patience.

“It's temporary. When Joseph grows up, he'll take his place. I've explained this, Nora. Don't make me take what little time I have left with Aaron and use it to make you feel better.”

I looked at him for a long time without saying anything.

“All right.”

Only then did his face soften. He pulled my coat around my shoulders.

“I knew you'd understand. Eat something before it gets cold.”

I said nothing.

Back at the estate, I opened the registration form for my new job in Zurich. Gabriel's name was still listed as my emergency contact.

I stared at it for a long time. My father had died years ago. Apart from Gabriel, the only person I could put down was my mother.

I deleted his name and entered hers.

That evening, my lawyer sent a message.

[The divorce papers have been delivered.]

A few minutes later, my phone lit up again.

Gabriel was in the next room, but all he sent was one line.

[I'm not divorcing you.]

Nora's POVI visited Aaron the night before his surgery. He had a sketchbook on his lap. When he saw me, he asked softly, “Will I be able to get out of bed by myself afterward?”“That depends on how you recover. Just let us do the tests we need. We'll take care of the rest.”He turned to the last page. He'd drawn the stars on a ceiling.“I gave Joseph his room back.”I looked at the drawing, then tucked the blanket around him.“When you're better, you can choose a light you like for your own room.”Before I went into surgery the next morning, I watched a video of Joseph. Then I put my phone in my locker. The operation took longer than we'd expected. Only after we'd finished the last critical step did I notice how stiff my shoulders were.Aaron went to intensive care. We'd got him through the most dangerous part, but there was still more treatment ahead. His recovery would take time.Celeste covered her face and cried. Gabriel wrote down the doctors' answers. When I came out, he handed

Gabriel's POVCeleste was there when the lawyer arrived with the papers. She thought we'd be discussing Aaron's treatment. When she heard the word divorce, her cup tapped against the table.“You're really going to sign?”I asked the lawyer to wait in the sitting room, then turned to her.“This is between Nora and me.”After a moment, she asked, “What about Aaron?”“His medical team will keep treating him.”“But she's the one operating. If you agree to the divorce now, what if she stops trying—”“Celeste.”She fell silent.I remembered Nora spending the night at the hospital. Once I'd made sure Joseph was all right, I'd asked her to accept Aaron as my heir. Her own son had still been in a hospital bed.How was I any different from Celeste? We both thought that as long as Aaron needed something, Nora should come last.“You don't need to warn me about how she'll treat him. And I'm not using our marriage to make her save Aaron.”Her eyes filled.“Before your brother died—”“He asked me to

Gabriel's POVBefore I brought Aaron to Zurich, I canceled the announcement naming him my temporary heir.My underboss Leo asked what to do with the papers we'd already drawn up.“File them away. Nothing goes out.”Celeste didn't argue. She only asked whether Nora had told me to do it. I shook my head. She said nothing more and held Aaron's hand the whole way.Nora and her team were waiting at the hospital. She crouched in front of Aaron and asked if he ever saw double, or had trouble swallowing water. He was frightened. She had a nurse show him the equipment first, then took her time explaining what would happen.I stood beside them with nothing to add.I started waiting for her after work. The first dinner I sent came back untouched. I tried bread from a bakery, the kind she'd always liked. She asked reception to tell me there was food in the staff room.Eventually, I stopped sending other people. I waited by the exit with the bag myself. She came out discussing a scan with a colleag

Nora's POVJoseph woke up hungry when we landed. The maid held my bag while I fed him in the nursing room. Only then did I turn on my phone. The screen was full of missed calls. Gabriel's message was at the top.[I'm on my way to the airport. Answer your phone.]I muted his messages and let the hospital coordinator know we'd arrived. The apartment the hospital had arranged was small. The crib was already set up. There was milk in the fridge and a few ready-made meals.I sat on the edge of the bed and finally let my shoulders relax. The next morning, I collected my badge and completed my paperwork. I'd spend the first few weeks on research and case reviews. Once I'd recovered and passed my clinical assessment, I could return to surgery.Gabriel found me at the hospital that afternoon. He'd left his guards downstairs. His coat hung over one arm, and he looked worn out from the trip.He came straight toward me and reached for my shoulder.I stepped back.“Where's Joseph?”“At the apartmen

Gabriel's POVI stared at the butler, trying to keep the panic out of my voice.“What do you mean, she went to Zurich?”“Donna took an afternoon flight. Joseph and his maid went with her.”This afternoon, I'd been having the tailor adjust Aaron's cuffs. I'd planned to spend time with Nora and our son after the dinner. How could she be gone?“Did she say when she'd be back?”The butler shook his head and held out the divorce papers.I took them and turned to the last page.Nora had signed.Last night, seeing her signature had only made me angry. She knew I'd never agree. Why get a lawyer? Why take it this far?Now those familiar letters made my hands go cold. She wasn't trying to make me give in. She wasn't waiting for me to sweet-talk her.She meant to end our marriage.I called her. The call wouldn't go through. I tried another number. Nothing.Still gripping my phone, I stumbled into our bedroom. The crib was empty. The bottles and the little blue blanket were gone. So were Nora's sl

The morning after he got the papers, Gabriel got up early to bring me breakfast and make Joseph's bottle, as though nothing had happened. He sat beside the bed with our son. When Joseph finished drinking, he held him against his shoulder and gently rubbed his back.“He's hungry today.”Gabriel smiled and showed me Joseph's tiny fist wrapped around his collar.I sat nearby, folding the clothes the baby would need for the trip. I said nothing. The butler came in with the dinner plans and asked Gabriel to check the seating at the head table.Gabriel looked it over and changed two names.“Aaron on my right. Celeste beside him.”He moved his pen to the other side.“Nora here. Leave room beside her for the stroller.”I stared at the seating chart. He'd done the same thing at our first family dinner. He'd taken the pen and written my name right next to his.I barely knew anyone in the family. He'd taken my hand in front of them all and promised that place would always be mine.He was still sa
