Chapter 4

Author: Hundred Years
My eyes widened, and I raised my voice.

"That was just a bath, nothing more! Besides, you weren't even an adult yet!"

I stopped short.

Hold on. Why did that sound so wrong when I said it out loud? It almost made it seem as though I had actually done something wrong. I quickly added, "Besides, I didn't do anything!"

Onyx said nothing, and the look he gave me made me feel like the biggest jerk alive. In the end, all I could do was let out a weary sigh.

"Anyway, no matter how you look at it, I'm not your mate. And I don't have the energy or the money to keep taking care of you."

He sounded displeased.

"Why? Everything was fine before. You don't want me anymore just because I won't mate with some other beast?

"If that's the case, then why don't we just mate with each other?"

I felt like I should stop talking. No matter what I said, he would only twist my words around again. A beast had no idea how hard it was for a human to earn money.

All I could do was sigh.

"Let's just get some sleep. We'll talk about this tomorrow."

Onyx paused and fixed me with a burning stare.

"So you agree?"

"I do not!" I shouted immediately. "Absolutely not!"

It had not expected me to react so strongly. In the end, though, I was too exhausted to keep arguing. It wrapped its tail tightly around me and drifted off to sleep in no time.

I, on the other hand, tossed and turned for hours.

Unable to sleep, I opened an app and searched for exotic pets.

I had been counting on Onyx to make my fortune. Now that plan had fallen apart. Not only could Onyx no longer make me rich, but all the money I had saved and spent on him was gone as well. I had no choice but to figure out another way.

Breeding exotic pets was still a profitable business. Then it occurred to me that if one opportunity fell through, I could always look for the next one.

The next morning, Onyx got up early as usual and started making breakfast.

The doorbell rang.

I was just about to get up and answer it when Onyx beat me to it and opened the door himself.

The moment the door swung open, Onyx froze.

I walked over and found a pure green snake poking its head out of a box.

"Ms. Kenzie Rowe?" the deliveryman asked immediately. "This is the exotic pet you ordered online last night."

The ladle slipped from the tip of Onyx's tail the moment he saw the snake.

Meanwhile, I happily signed for the delivery after thanking the driver.

Sprout, my new little green snake, had cost me every last cent I had left. If this plan fell through too, it would be enough to give me a heart attack.

I put Sprout in the cage I had originally bought for Onyx, which he had never ended up using, then eagerly set out fresh water and food. When Onyx called me over to eat, I did not even bother going. I spent the entire day fussing over Sprout and would have happily fed him and bathed him myself.

Just as I turned around to set up a heat mat in Sprout's cage, an emerald green tail suddenly wrapped tightly around my waist. Onyx coiled himself around me from head to toe as though staking his claim, glaring at the little snake with open hostility.

Annoyed by how clingy and possessive he was being, I said, "Stop fooling around."

Onyx rested his head on my shoulder. His voice came out muffled, but it left no room for argument.

"It's time for my bath."

I frowned and tried to pull away.

"Didn't I tell you this morning that from now on, you'd sleep by yourself and take your own baths?"

Onyx immediately looked displeased.

"You're my mate. We emerald dragons always help our mates bathe."

I was not happy either. Since yesterday, I had been holding back my temper, and now I finally could not take it anymore.

"Onyx, you're a dragon and I'm a human. We can't be together!

"And I don't like you! I like my own kind. I like humans!"

The moment Onyx heard that, the soft, sweet look in his eyes vanished, and his silky voice turned cold.

"So what you've wanted all along was a human as weak and helpless as you?"

I froze, completely lost as to what he meant. Weak and helpless?

Yet the tight grip around my waist suddenly disappeared. I turned to look at Onyx, only to find a handsome man standing before me.

Dressed in emerald green, he carried a refined, scholarly air. His piercing eyes were fixed intently on me, making it impossible to look away.

I was stunned as the man in front of me pulled me into a tight hug again.

"Can you mate with me now?"

I grabbed the throw pillow next to me and threw it at him."Get out! Get out right now! Tomorrow I'm having Sprout sleep with me, so you can go sleep in the living room!"Apparently, that struck a nerve, because he stormed out in a fury. The next morning, I woke up feeling well rested. When I walked into the living room, though, Sprout was nowhere to be seen.I found Onyx in the kitchen, busy making breakfast."Where's Sprout?" I asked.Onyx still seemed to be in the same good mood as the day before, but his words told a completely different story."I threw it out," he said calmly. My eyes widened."Threw it out where?" I asked at once. "Do you have any idea how much I paid for it?"Onyx glanced up from what he was doing."You care about it that much?"I was momentarily speechless at his possessiveness."I paid a fortune for it," I said. "Besides, I've had it for quite a while now."Suddenly, Onyx rinsed his hands and set one damp hand beside my ear, his lips catching my

He paused, and his eyes lit up, but the moment he heard what I said next, the light in them dimmed."You'll have to change back into your original form, though."He frowned again."Why? The two forms make no difference to me at all."I did not understand what he meant by that, but I chose not to ask. I had a feeling that if I asked even one more question, I would lose my nerve. He continued."Then which form should I take to mate with you? Or rather, which version of me do you like more?"Once again, I was left speechless. Why on earth was this dragon obsessed with that topic? I had no intention of answering, and I certainly did not want to encourage him. Before long, Onyx tossed Sprout out of the bedroom, claiming he did not like having other species in there. Heaven knew I felt exactly the same way.I remembered agreeing with him that we would sleep in separate rooms. Somehow, though, he seemed to forget that arrangement every single day and ended up crawling under my covers

With that, he found a chair, sat down, and looked at me."Why are you still here? Planning to stick around and take care of me in my old age?"I looked at him, wanting to ask how he had found Onyx in the first place. Yet when I turned around again, the old man had vanished without a trace. The sheer strangeness of it made me jump.Onyx explained it to me."He's the spirit of the mountain behind us. Years ago, he saw how bored I was on my own, so he tricked me into leaving and sold me to you."I stared at him in shock."A mountain spirit? A shameless old crook? A guy who tricks kids? Those are all the same person?"Onyx's lips suddenly curved into a smile at my reaction."I spent years carefully choosing you. It wasn't really a trick. If anything, I should thank him."I was speechless. For the first time, I genuinely felt as though I was living in a fantasy world. The revelation was so absurd that I did not spend much time thinking about anything else he had said.Under the ch

After we got away from the crowd, I led Sprout and Onyx toward the woods nearby. All the trimmed branches in the park had already been cleared away, so the woods were the only place left to find whole ones. The woods were not very deep, but I had heard they connected to a stretch of remote mountains on the other side. No one ever ventured into those mountains. That reminded me of something, and I glanced at Onyx."Is your home around here?"Onyx did not understand why I was asking, so I explained."After all, dragons live either in the water or up in the mountains."Onyx answered firmly."I might have been born here, but my home isn't here."I grew curious. "Then where's your home?"He suddenly raised a hand and pointed at me."Wherever you are, that's my home."I froze. I knew all too well that Onyx was a dragon who never lied, and for some reason, I felt a little warmth spread through my chest.I did not ask any more questions after that. As we reached the edge of the woo

I spent quite a while trying to figure out why the little green snake had rammed itself into the cage earlier. In truth, my thoughts kept drifting back to what had happened before, and I could not understand why Onyx's personality had changed so drastically all of a sudden.Did dragons go through some kind of complete personality shift once they reached adulthood? At that moment, I genuinely wanted to demand answers from the heavens and ask for my sweet, adorable Onyx back. Lost in thought, I crouched in front of the sealed cage for so long that I must have looked completely helpless. Then Onyx's voice came from behind me. For some reason, his silky voice seemed to carry a clingy, honeyed note."This kind of snake can't be kept in a sealed box this small. You need a larger enclosure with branches for it to coil around."Only after hearing that did I remember reading about the care requirements for this type of snake.Onyx stood behind me, eyeing Sprout as he spoke irritably."It

I had to admit, Onyx in human form was far too striking. How many people in this world could see such good looks and stay unmoved? I certainly could not. Yet what he said was so blatant that it was hard to ignore.I tried to push Onyx away, but he would not budge. In the end, I could only let out a sigh."Onyx, turning into a human doesn't make you human. You're still a dragon, and I'm still a human. We're completely different.""Besides, it took you a thousand years just to reach adulthood, while my entire life will only last a few decades. We're not right for each other."Even after I explained it, Onyx acted as though he had not heard a word. He continued holding on and refused to let go."It's time for you to give me my bath."I was furious when I realized this dragon had not been listening to a single word I said. After all that talking, none of it had gotten through to him. I squirmed in his arms, trying to break free, but he was far too strong. No matter how hard I struggl
