Chapter 2

Author: Between Mist
I'd just wrapped up the call when I heard Renee's muffled sobs from the living room. She shared the signed divorce agreement in our family group chat, along with an essay claiming that she'd only wanted to help a cancer patient fulfill his dying wish, while I was using our ten-year marriage to force her to stand by and watch him die.

Less than five minutes after her message was sent, the group chat blew up.

My aunt, Susan Foster, was the first to berate me. "How can you be so narrow-minded, Terrence?"

My uncle, Benedict Foster, immediately chimed in. "They're not getting legally married. It's just a wedding ceremony. Do you really need to get divorced?"

Someone even tagged me. "Jordan's about to die, yet you're still competing with a dying man over your wife? Have you no shame?"

I didn't reply to any of them. The harder they came at me now, the more humiliating it would be for them tomorrow.

…

Mom swiftly called off the tenth-anniversary celebration I'd planned and contacted the hotel to change it into a wedding reception. She even went home, unlocked the safe, and took out Dad's watch. It was the watch Dad had given me before he died.

All these years, Mom had insisted that she'd hand it to Oliver once he came of age. Yet, now, she personally fastened it around Jordan's wrist. "Jordan, you may not be my biological son, but in my heart, you're no different from Terrence and Philip."

Tears welled up in Jordan's eyes. "This is far too precious, Ma."

He politely refused, yet he raised his hand firmly, as if he was afraid the watch might fall off.

I stared at that watch. "Mom, are you sure you want to give it to him?"

Her expression hardened. "Jordan has only a month left. What's wrong with letting him wear your father's watch? You already have everything. Do you really have to hold a grudge against a dying man?"

…

That night, Jordan suddenly clutched his chest, claiming that he could have an episode at any moment. He leaned against Renee's shoulder, and his voice was barely above a whisper. "Why don't you stay with me, Ren? I'm afraid I'll fall asleep and never wake up again."

Renee immediately helped him into the master bedroom. It was the room where she and I had shared for a decade.

Oliver even took the initiative to bring him a blanket. "Mom, stay with Uncle Jordan. He can't be left alone right now, and Dad refuses to take care of him. What if his condition flares up in the middle of the night?"

I didn't stop them. If anything, I pulled out my phone. "I need to register the groom's medical information for the wedding. Send me a copy of your diagnosis."

Jordan visibly stiffened for a split second. Renee, however, didn't suspect a thing; she immediately took a photo of the report and sent it to me.

I forwarded the photo to the forensic investigator.

Less than half an hour later, I received a reply. "There's something wrong with the hospital stamp on this report. The serial number format is also incorrect. It looks like someone took an old report and changed the name on it."

I stared at the screen and let out a derisive chuckle. It was just as I'd expected.

In my previous life, I hadn't uncovered the truth until the day I died. This time around, the show had barely begun, and a crack had already appeared in Jordan's mask.

Right before the door to the master bedroom was about to close, Renee turned around to look at me. She didn't look the least bit guilty about what she'd done to her husband. If anything, she shot me a warning look. "Terrence, keep this up, and you can forget about attending the wedding tomorrow."

The door clicked shut. I stared at that door and murmured, "Don't worry. I wouldn't miss your wedding for the world."

Derrick's rehabilitation center completed its renovation a year later. A plaque was erected in the newly built garden. It didn't bear a single donor's name. There was only a single sentence. "Kindness should never be used as leverage to get something in return." On the day of the unveiling, Oliver bustled around. His face flushed red from the sun. He had grown considerably taller and no longer resembled the boy who had hidden behind Jordan at the wedding and righteously accused me. Derrick had been fitted with a new prosthetic leg that suited him better. He walked up to me and patted his leg. "This time, I know who paid for it." I smiled. "Consider it an investment. Once you're all better, you can help me keep an eye on that kid."Oliver was moving flowerpots a short distance away. When he heard that, he turned around and took one look at me. His eyes lit up for a moment, but he didn't come over to take credit for it. Once the event wrapped up, he returned to my apartment wi

The divorce became final a month later. The court ruled that Renee bore significant responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage. The marital assets she had secretly transferred were recovered. When the remaining assets were divided, her share was substantially reduced, and she was ordered to pay additional compensation. The house we had lived in for a decade was awarded to me. However, I didn't stay. I listed the house for sale and moved into an apartment closer to my company. Oliver came with me. He didn't ask the reason I hadn't kept our old home. He was well aware that every corner of that place held traces of Renee and Jordan. The master bedroom door, the closet where the wedding gown had been kept, and the bed where Jordan had lain pretending to be sick. Some houses could still be lived in. Yet, that home was dead and buried. Mom moved out of the villa as agreed. She rented a modest two-bedroom apartment and moved in with Philip. After losing his position at the

On the day of the trial, the gallery was filled to the brim.Jordan no longer pretended to be sick. He wore a prison uniform as he stood at the defendant's dock with a grim expression. Renee sat several feet away from him. Yet she never looked in his direction. The prosecution presented the evidence one piece at a time—the original recording from ten years ago, the burned remains of the child's smartwatch, Derrick's testimony, and proof that the warehouse lock had been tampered with. Then came the scheme they had devised ten years later, complete with a fake cancer diagnosis, a staged death, and a plan to transfer my assets. Each piece of evidence corresponded to a lie they had once told. Jordan's defense attorney tried to emphasize that the fire had caused no fatalities and that Jordan had ultimately carried Oliver to safety. The prosecution, however, pointed out that he had stolen the credit after Derrick completed the rescue.More importantly, Jordan had known that the war

After learning that Renee had shifted all the blame onto him, Jordan finally broke his silence. He requested to give a supplementary statement. 15 years ago, when he first met Renee, he already knew she was my girlfriend. He deliberately engineered chance encounters, accompanied her as she complained about how busy I was, and gradually portrayed himself as someone who understood her better than I did. He had never loved Renee. He simply wanted to prove that he could take away everything I had. After the fire, he became my family's savior. Mom treated him better than her own son. Philip did whatever he told him to. Because Renee shared a dark secret with him, she could never escape him. Jordan became addicted to the power he held over them all.Three years ago, when he realized that I was planning to expand my company and that the value of my assets was about to skyrocket, he began meeting with Renee frequently again. He came up with the fake cancer scheme, using his supposed d

When Renee's lawyer found me, the divorce proceedings had already entered the asset investigation phase. He came bearing a single message—Renee was willing to admit she was wrong. As long as I withdrew the divorce lawsuit and testified in her criminal case that she had never deliberately intended to take Oliver's life, she would give up on Jordan and be a good wife to me again. After hearing that, I slid the manila folder across the table toward him. "Tell her I refuse."The lawyer didn't take it. "Mr. Hall, at the end of the day, Ms. Myers is Oliver's mother. If she's given a harsh sentence, it'll inevitably affect the child's future." Those words were exactly the same as Renee's. Once again, she was using Oliver as her human meat shield.…Several days later, mediation for the divorce proceedings began. Since the case was still under investigation, Renee was arranged to attend remotely from the detention center. The moment the screen lit up, she no longer looked as polished

When Mom and Philip showed up at my doorstep, they brought more than a dozen relatives with them. Aunt Susan and Uncle Benedict, who had berated me at the wedding, were among them. Clutching fruit baskets and health supplements, they stood in the living room with awkward smiles plastered across their faces. Aunt Susan broke the silence. "Terrence, that day, we were deceived by Jordan, too. At the end of the day, we're family. Don't take our harsh words to heart."Uncle Benedict nodded in agreement. "Your mom isn't in good health. She hasn't been able to eat or sleep these last few days. You're her son; you can't just abandon her." I sat on the couch and laid the documents out one by one on the coffee table. No one took them.Mom approached me with teary eyes. "I know I messed up. I've gotten your father's watch back for you." I raised my wrist. The watch was already strapped to it."It was mine to begin with. You weren't making things right by getting it back; you were simpl
