Chapter 3

Author: Between Mist
Before long, Renee's and Jordan's voices drifted out from the master bedroom.

Jordan said it was too cold, so Renee cranked up the air conditioner. He gasped that he couldn't catch his breath, so she helped him undo the top button of his shirt.

We'd been married for a decade, and she had never taken care of me with such patience. I spun on my heel and headed back to the study, where I made backup copies of the divorce agreement, Jordan's diagnosis report, and the complete inventory of our assets.

…

The wedding planners arrived with their staff as soon as the sun came up.

Jordan was wheeled out in a wheelchair with an oxygen tube under his nose and a layer of ashen-white powder deliberately dusted over his face. To anyone who didn't know better, he looked like he was on the verge of drawing his last breath.

During the rehearsal, he abruptly tugged on my sleeve. "Terrence, can you be the one to wheel me down the aisle tomorrow? I'd like you to be the one to place Ren's hand in mine, too."

Renee's eyes misted over. "Jordan wants you to be part of the wedding to prove that there's nothing inappropriate going on between us."

I almost burst into laughter. Jordan stole my wife, and now he wanted me to deliver her to him on a silver platter.

I'd seen my fair share of shameless people, but he was the first to make such a grand ceremony out of it.

"I'll pay for your wedding, but I won't wait on you hand and foot."

I was about to walk away when Jordan called out, "I think my oxygen tube has come loose, Terrence. Can you adjust it for me?"

"I can't."

The moment the words left my lips, he tumbled out of his wheelchair. His oxygen tube came loose, and he clutched his chest, twitching violently. To make matters worse, his lips quivered as well.

Renee screamed and hurried over, shoving me aside. "Do you want him to drop dead, Terrence?"

Oliver, too, rushed over to shield Jordan. "You know how sick Uncle Jordan is! Would it have killed you to give him a hand?"

Mom was so anxious that tears streamed down her face. "I raised you all these years for nothing!"

Jordan was helped into the guest room. Everyone was busy calling the doctor and fetching his medication.

No one noticed when he suddenly opened his eyes as he passed by me. He grasped my wrist, lowering his voice to a whisper. "See? The living can never compete with a dying man, Terrence. After I kick the bucket, Ren will love me for the rest of her life!"

Memories flashed through my mind as I gazed at him. Years ago, when he was running a 104-degree fever, I was the one who piggybacked him across three blocks to the hospital. Back when my startup was on the rocks, and I had only 20 grand to my name, I still gave half of it to him.

I'd genuinely treated him as my own brother. Yet, now, he was sitting in a wheelchair, using a fake diagnosis to steal my wife, deceive Mom, and turn my own son against me.

Just then, my phone buzzed. The forensic investigator sent me the verification results. "We've verified it with the hospital. The report number is legitimate, but it belongs to someone else."

Right after that, I received a zip file. It contained three consecutive years of hotel check-in records.

On the 15th of every month, Jordan had booked the same suite at the same hotel. The accompanying guest's name was plain as day—Renee Myers.

Derrick's rehabilitation center completed its renovation a year later. A plaque was erected in the newly built garden. It didn't bear a single donor's name. There was only a single sentence. "Kindness should never be used as leverage to get something in return." On the day of the unveiling, Oliver bustled around. His face flushed red from the sun. He had grown considerably taller and no longer resembled the boy who had hidden behind Jordan at the wedding and righteously accused me. Derrick had been fitted with a new prosthetic leg that suited him better. He walked up to me and patted his leg. "This time, I know who paid for it." I smiled. "Consider it an investment. Once you're all better, you can help me keep an eye on that kid."Oliver was moving flowerpots a short distance away. When he heard that, he turned around and took one look at me. His eyes lit up for a moment, but he didn't come over to take credit for it. Once the event wrapped up, he returned to my apartment wi

The divorce became final a month later. The court ruled that Renee bore significant responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage. The marital assets she had secretly transferred were recovered. When the remaining assets were divided, her share was substantially reduced, and she was ordered to pay additional compensation. The house we had lived in for a decade was awarded to me. However, I didn't stay. I listed the house for sale and moved into an apartment closer to my company. Oliver came with me. He didn't ask the reason I hadn't kept our old home. He was well aware that every corner of that place held traces of Renee and Jordan. The master bedroom door, the closet where the wedding gown had been kept, and the bed where Jordan had lain pretending to be sick. Some houses could still be lived in. Yet, that home was dead and buried. Mom moved out of the villa as agreed. She rented a modest two-bedroom apartment and moved in with Philip. After losing his position at the

On the day of the trial, the gallery was filled to the brim.Jordan no longer pretended to be sick. He wore a prison uniform as he stood at the defendant's dock with a grim expression. Renee sat several feet away from him. Yet she never looked in his direction. The prosecution presented the evidence one piece at a time—the original recording from ten years ago, the burned remains of the child's smartwatch, Derrick's testimony, and proof that the warehouse lock had been tampered with. Then came the scheme they had devised ten years later, complete with a fake cancer diagnosis, a staged death, and a plan to transfer my assets. Each piece of evidence corresponded to a lie they had once told. Jordan's defense attorney tried to emphasize that the fire had caused no fatalities and that Jordan had ultimately carried Oliver to safety. The prosecution, however, pointed out that he had stolen the credit after Derrick completed the rescue.More importantly, Jordan had known that the war

After learning that Renee had shifted all the blame onto him, Jordan finally broke his silence. He requested to give a supplementary statement. 15 years ago, when he first met Renee, he already knew she was my girlfriend. He deliberately engineered chance encounters, accompanied her as she complained about how busy I was, and gradually portrayed himself as someone who understood her better than I did. He had never loved Renee. He simply wanted to prove that he could take away everything I had. After the fire, he became my family's savior. Mom treated him better than her own son. Philip did whatever he told him to. Because Renee shared a dark secret with him, she could never escape him. Jordan became addicted to the power he held over them all.Three years ago, when he realized that I was planning to expand my company and that the value of my assets was about to skyrocket, he began meeting with Renee frequently again. He came up with the fake cancer scheme, using his supposed d

When Renee's lawyer found me, the divorce proceedings had already entered the asset investigation phase. He came bearing a single message—Renee was willing to admit she was wrong. As long as I withdrew the divorce lawsuit and testified in her criminal case that she had never deliberately intended to take Oliver's life, she would give up on Jordan and be a good wife to me again. After hearing that, I slid the manila folder across the table toward him. "Tell her I refuse."The lawyer didn't take it. "Mr. Hall, at the end of the day, Ms. Myers is Oliver's mother. If she's given a harsh sentence, it'll inevitably affect the child's future." Those words were exactly the same as Renee's. Once again, she was using Oliver as her human meat shield.…Several days later, mediation for the divorce proceedings began. Since the case was still under investigation, Renee was arranged to attend remotely from the detention center. The moment the screen lit up, she no longer looked as polished

When Mom and Philip showed up at my doorstep, they brought more than a dozen relatives with them. Aunt Susan and Uncle Benedict, who had berated me at the wedding, were among them. Clutching fruit baskets and health supplements, they stood in the living room with awkward smiles plastered across their faces. Aunt Susan broke the silence. "Terrence, that day, we were deceived by Jordan, too. At the end of the day, we're family. Don't take our harsh words to heart."Uncle Benedict nodded in agreement. "Your mom isn't in good health. She hasn't been able to eat or sleep these last few days. You're her son; you can't just abandon her." I sat on the couch and laid the documents out one by one on the coffee table. No one took them.Mom approached me with teary eyes. "I know I messed up. I've gotten your father's watch back for you." I raised my wrist. The watch was already strapped to it."It was mine to begin with. You weren't making things right by getting it back; you were simpl
