Chapter 5

Author: Between Mist
When the lights came on in the wedding hall, Jordan was already seated in the center of the stage.

He wore a white suit, his face ghastly pale. There was a thin blanket on his lap and an oxygen cannula beneath his nose. He was determined to play the part of a sickly man to the very end, so he had to stop and gasp for air after every few sentences.

Meanwhile, the guests began filing into the room. The moment they spotted me in the last row, the whispers started flying.

"How dare he show his face?"

"He couldn't even loan his wife out for a single day. How petty."

"Jordan is practically on his deathbed, and he's still insisting on a divorce. How heartless."

Mom wove through the tables with a glass of wine in her hand, telling anyone who would listen how hard Jordan's life had been. He'd never asked anyone for a favor before, and now, all he wanted was the chance to be a groom. Each time she repeated herself, the look she gave me grew colder.

Philip stood beside her, pretending to persuade everyone not to blame me. In reality, it took him only a few words to lay bare how I'd threatened Renee with divorce. Before long, everyone in the banquet hall knew I was a jealous husband who couldn't even tolerate a dying man.

When the wedding march began to play, the bustling hall gradually quieted down. Renee appeared at the entrance in her wedding gown, and applause instantly swept from the front rows to the back. Jordan gazed at her unblinkingly, as if he had finally gotten the person he'd wanted most in his life.

He raised his hand to cover his mouth, his shoulders trembling violently. When he pulled his handkerchief away, a bright red blotch of blood stained the fabric.

One of the guests burst into tears. "He's gravely ill, yet he's still forcing himself to go through with the wedding!"

"Poor guy. He's literally coughing up blood. He probably won't even make it through the month."

"Renee's such a kind soul! She'd rather be misunderstood by her husband than let Jordan leave this world with regrets."

The officiant invited Renee to recite her vows. She held Jordan's hand, tears glistening in her eyes. "We found each other too late in this lifetime, Jordan. If there really is a next life, I'll make sure I meet you first, fall in love with you first, and marry you first!"

Applause erupted throughout the venue. I sat in the last row, watching her rewrite our ten years of marriage into nothing more than a mistake.

When Oliver stepped forward with the bouquet, he abruptly threw his arms around Jordan. "Pops!"

The moment the word left his mouth, the entire venue fell pin-drop silent.

Jordan hurriedly waved his hand. "That won't do, Oliver… Your biological father is in the audience's seat!"

Despite his refusal, he tightened his hold around Oliver.

Oliver turned around to look at me. "He saved my life, so he's my second dad."

Mom started clapping, and my relatives joined in, showering Oliver with praise for being such a good, grateful young man.

The officiant wiped away his tears and invited me onto the stage. "Mr. Price told me that his greatest wish is to receive your blessing in person, Mr. Hall."

Jordan gazed at me with a triumphant glint in his eyes that only I could understand. "Don't tell me you're so petty that you can't even offer a simple blessing in front of all these people, Terrence."

I rose from my seat and walked onto the stage.

Someone in the audience sneered, "Look who's finally acting like a man."

Renee offered me her hand. "Don't make me lose what little respect I have left for you, Terrence."

I didn't take her hand.

Jordan abruptly lowered his head and started coughing. He broke into a coughing fit and nearly slid out of his wheelchair.

He covered his mouth once again. When he pulled his handkerchief away, another glaring pool of blood stained the fabric.

I walked up to his wheelchair and crouched down. "You're coughing so violently… Let me clean you up."

Jordan went rigid. Before he knew it, I forced his head upright and grasped his chin.

"What do you think you're doing, Terrence?" Renee shrieked as she lunged at us.

Jordan thrashed wildly, kicking his legs with more agility than a normal person.

Mom slammed her fist against the table and fumed, "Unhand him, you brute!"

Several of my relatives also rushed onto the stage. "You won't even spare a cancer patient? Are you even human?"

Jordan's face flushed crimson from the pain, gritting his teeth. However, the tighter he kept his mouth shut, the more force I exerted.

"Aren't you at death's door? How do you have even more strength than I do?" I wedged my thumb against his teeth to break his bite, slipping my finger past his molars.

The very next second, I dug out a ruptured capsule from behind his molars and flung it onto Renee's wedding gown. The crimson fluid burst, striking the pristine white hem of her gown like a violent slap across the face.

Total silence swept the hall.

Pinching the blood-stained plastic between my fingers, I looked up at Jordan. "Have you been enjoying yourself pretending to have cancer, you homewrecker?"

Derrick's rehabilitation center completed its renovation a year later. A plaque was erected in the newly built garden. It didn't bear a single donor's name. There was only a single sentence. "Kindness should never be used as leverage to get something in return." On the day of the unveiling, Oliver bustled around. His face flushed red from the sun. He had grown considerably taller and no longer resembled the boy who had hidden behind Jordan at the wedding and righteously accused me. Derrick had been fitted with a new prosthetic leg that suited him better. He walked up to me and patted his leg. "This time, I know who paid for it." I smiled. "Consider it an investment. Once you're all better, you can help me keep an eye on that kid."Oliver was moving flowerpots a short distance away. When he heard that, he turned around and took one look at me. His eyes lit up for a moment, but he didn't come over to take credit for it. Once the event wrapped up, he returned to my apartment wi

The divorce became final a month later. The court ruled that Renee bore significant responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage. The marital assets she had secretly transferred were recovered. When the remaining assets were divided, her share was substantially reduced, and she was ordered to pay additional compensation. The house we had lived in for a decade was awarded to me. However, I didn't stay. I listed the house for sale and moved into an apartment closer to my company. Oliver came with me. He didn't ask the reason I hadn't kept our old home. He was well aware that every corner of that place held traces of Renee and Jordan. The master bedroom door, the closet where the wedding gown had been kept, and the bed where Jordan had lain pretending to be sick. Some houses could still be lived in. Yet, that home was dead and buried. Mom moved out of the villa as agreed. She rented a modest two-bedroom apartment and moved in with Philip. After losing his position at the

On the day of the trial, the gallery was filled to the brim.Jordan no longer pretended to be sick. He wore a prison uniform as he stood at the defendant's dock with a grim expression. Renee sat several feet away from him. Yet she never looked in his direction. The prosecution presented the evidence one piece at a time—the original recording from ten years ago, the burned remains of the child's smartwatch, Derrick's testimony, and proof that the warehouse lock had been tampered with. Then came the scheme they had devised ten years later, complete with a fake cancer diagnosis, a staged death, and a plan to transfer my assets. Each piece of evidence corresponded to a lie they had once told. Jordan's defense attorney tried to emphasize that the fire had caused no fatalities and that Jordan had ultimately carried Oliver to safety. The prosecution, however, pointed out that he had stolen the credit after Derrick completed the rescue.More importantly, Jordan had known that the war

After learning that Renee had shifted all the blame onto him, Jordan finally broke his silence. He requested to give a supplementary statement. 15 years ago, when he first met Renee, he already knew she was my girlfriend. He deliberately engineered chance encounters, accompanied her as she complained about how busy I was, and gradually portrayed himself as someone who understood her better than I did. He had never loved Renee. He simply wanted to prove that he could take away everything I had. After the fire, he became my family's savior. Mom treated him better than her own son. Philip did whatever he told him to. Because Renee shared a dark secret with him, she could never escape him. Jordan became addicted to the power he held over them all.Three years ago, when he realized that I was planning to expand my company and that the value of my assets was about to skyrocket, he began meeting with Renee frequently again. He came up with the fake cancer scheme, using his supposed d

When Renee's lawyer found me, the divorce proceedings had already entered the asset investigation phase. He came bearing a single message—Renee was willing to admit she was wrong. As long as I withdrew the divorce lawsuit and testified in her criminal case that she had never deliberately intended to take Oliver's life, she would give up on Jordan and be a good wife to me again. After hearing that, I slid the manila folder across the table toward him. "Tell her I refuse."The lawyer didn't take it. "Mr. Hall, at the end of the day, Ms. Myers is Oliver's mother. If she's given a harsh sentence, it'll inevitably affect the child's future." Those words were exactly the same as Renee's. Once again, she was using Oliver as her human meat shield.…Several days later, mediation for the divorce proceedings began. Since the case was still under investigation, Renee was arranged to attend remotely from the detention center. The moment the screen lit up, she no longer looked as polished

When Mom and Philip showed up at my doorstep, they brought more than a dozen relatives with them. Aunt Susan and Uncle Benedict, who had berated me at the wedding, were among them. Clutching fruit baskets and health supplements, they stood in the living room with awkward smiles plastered across their faces. Aunt Susan broke the silence. "Terrence, that day, we were deceived by Jordan, too. At the end of the day, we're family. Don't take our harsh words to heart."Uncle Benedict nodded in agreement. "Your mom isn't in good health. She hasn't been able to eat or sleep these last few days. You're her son; you can't just abandon her." I sat on the couch and laid the documents out one by one on the coffee table. No one took them.Mom approached me with teary eyes. "I know I messed up. I've gotten your father's watch back for you." I raised my wrist. The watch was already strapped to it."It was mine to begin with. You weren't making things right by getting it back; you were simpl
