Chapter 4

Author: Between Mist
I downloaded all the hotel records and backed them up to an encrypted hard drive.

Renee crouched in front of Jordan outside the door, fixing his collar. "I thought I lost you back there."

Jordan took her hand. "If I really die before the wedding, will you have regrets?"

"Don't spout such nonsense!" she chided, though tears spilled from her eyes.

Neither of them let go of each other's hand.

…

The wedding rehearsal resumed.

Renee changed into the wedding gown she'd worn when she married me a decade ago. I'd accompanied her to more than a dozen bridal shops before we settled on one. Then, we had it altered stitch by stitch to make it perfect for her.

She'd told me she'd only wear it once in her life. Now, she stood before Jordan and took out our old wedding vows.

The opening lines were still the same. However, the rest had been rewritten beyond recognition.

"From the first time you stood in front of me to protect me, I knew you'd be the most important person in my life."

Those words had originally referred to the time I'd shielded her from a runaway motorcycle. Now, she'd given that memory to Jordan instead.

Oliver ran onto the stage with a golden trophy. Engraved on it were six words—The Best Dad in the World.

He had secretly commissioned it half a year ago as a birthday present for me. Now, he shoved it into Jordan's arms. "Thank you for saving me back then, Uncle Jordan! You're more like a real dad to me than my own father."

Jordan hugged Oliver with tears in his eyes.

Mom stood beside them, wiping away her tears. She then personally tightened the watch Dad had left behind on Jordan's wrist.

Philip, on the other hand, handed me the guest seating chart. My name was arranged in the very last row, directly across from the restroom.

"Terrence, since you have a short fuse, you should sit further away so you don't cause a scene and disrupt the wedding."

I snapped the seating chart shut. "Looks great."

Renee approached us. Her brows drew together as she looked at me. "Why are you so calm today?"

"Didn't you warn me not to cause a scene? Now that I'm not making one, you feel off?"

Renee was stumped. Then, her expression darkened. "I know you don't really want a divorce, Terrence. You're just using the divorce agreement to force my hand."

I held her gaze. "I'll ask you this one last time—are you calling off the wedding or not?"

Without the slightest hesitation, she responded, "No, I'm not calling it off. Tomorrow, you must congratulate us in front of all our relatives. As long as you can be the bigger person, I'll act as though the divorce agreement never existed after the wedding."

Jordan sat in his wheelchair, leisurely turning Dad's watch around on his wrist. "All our relatives and friends will be watching tomorrow, Terrence. Ren is helping a dying man fulfill his last wish. If you refuse to even give us your blessings, you're forcing her to live with guilt for the rest of her life."

I remained silent.

…

That night, after the hotel's banquet hall had been cleared, I walked into the control room on my own. One by one, I uploaded the files I'd prepared into the playback system for the wedding's giant screen.

The images flashed across the monitor in rapid succession. Once I'd confirmed that everything was in place, I turned off the screen. "I'll give him the perfect parting gift tomorrow!"

Derrick's rehabilitation center completed its renovation a year later. A plaque was erected in the newly built garden. It didn't bear a single donor's name. There was only a single sentence. "Kindness should never be used as leverage to get something in return." On the day of the unveiling, Oliver bustled around. His face flushed red from the sun. He had grown considerably taller and no longer resembled the boy who had hidden behind Jordan at the wedding and righteously accused me. Derrick had been fitted with a new prosthetic leg that suited him better. He walked up to me and patted his leg. "This time, I know who paid for it." I smiled. "Consider it an investment. Once you're all better, you can help me keep an eye on that kid."Oliver was moving flowerpots a short distance away. When he heard that, he turned around and took one look at me. His eyes lit up for a moment, but he didn't come over to take credit for it. Once the event wrapped up, he returned to my apartment wi

The divorce became final a month later. The court ruled that Renee bore significant responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage. The marital assets she had secretly transferred were recovered. When the remaining assets were divided, her share was substantially reduced, and she was ordered to pay additional compensation. The house we had lived in for a decade was awarded to me. However, I didn't stay. I listed the house for sale and moved into an apartment closer to my company. Oliver came with me. He didn't ask the reason I hadn't kept our old home. He was well aware that every corner of that place held traces of Renee and Jordan. The master bedroom door, the closet where the wedding gown had been kept, and the bed where Jordan had lain pretending to be sick. Some houses could still be lived in. Yet, that home was dead and buried. Mom moved out of the villa as agreed. She rented a modest two-bedroom apartment and moved in with Philip. After losing his position at the

On the day of the trial, the gallery was filled to the brim.Jordan no longer pretended to be sick. He wore a prison uniform as he stood at the defendant's dock with a grim expression. Renee sat several feet away from him. Yet she never looked in his direction. The prosecution presented the evidence one piece at a time—the original recording from ten years ago, the burned remains of the child's smartwatch, Derrick's testimony, and proof that the warehouse lock had been tampered with. Then came the scheme they had devised ten years later, complete with a fake cancer diagnosis, a staged death, and a plan to transfer my assets. Each piece of evidence corresponded to a lie they had once told. Jordan's defense attorney tried to emphasize that the fire had caused no fatalities and that Jordan had ultimately carried Oliver to safety. The prosecution, however, pointed out that he had stolen the credit after Derrick completed the rescue.More importantly, Jordan had known that the war

After learning that Renee had shifted all the blame onto him, Jordan finally broke his silence. He requested to give a supplementary statement. 15 years ago, when he first met Renee, he already knew she was my girlfriend. He deliberately engineered chance encounters, accompanied her as she complained about how busy I was, and gradually portrayed himself as someone who understood her better than I did. He had never loved Renee. He simply wanted to prove that he could take away everything I had. After the fire, he became my family's savior. Mom treated him better than her own son. Philip did whatever he told him to. Because Renee shared a dark secret with him, she could never escape him. Jordan became addicted to the power he held over them all.Three years ago, when he realized that I was planning to expand my company and that the value of my assets was about to skyrocket, he began meeting with Renee frequently again. He came up with the fake cancer scheme, using his supposed d

When Renee's lawyer found me, the divorce proceedings had already entered the asset investigation phase. He came bearing a single message—Renee was willing to admit she was wrong. As long as I withdrew the divorce lawsuit and testified in her criminal case that she had never deliberately intended to take Oliver's life, she would give up on Jordan and be a good wife to me again. After hearing that, I slid the manila folder across the table toward him. "Tell her I refuse."The lawyer didn't take it. "Mr. Hall, at the end of the day, Ms. Myers is Oliver's mother. If she's given a harsh sentence, it'll inevitably affect the child's future." Those words were exactly the same as Renee's. Once again, she was using Oliver as her human meat shield.…Several days later, mediation for the divorce proceedings began. Since the case was still under investigation, Renee was arranged to attend remotely from the detention center. The moment the screen lit up, she no longer looked as polished

When Mom and Philip showed up at my doorstep, they brought more than a dozen relatives with them. Aunt Susan and Uncle Benedict, who had berated me at the wedding, were among them. Clutching fruit baskets and health supplements, they stood in the living room with awkward smiles plastered across their faces. Aunt Susan broke the silence. "Terrence, that day, we were deceived by Jordan, too. At the end of the day, we're family. Don't take our harsh words to heart."Uncle Benedict nodded in agreement. "Your mom isn't in good health. She hasn't been able to eat or sleep these last few days. You're her son; you can't just abandon her." I sat on the couch and laid the documents out one by one on the coffee table. No one took them.Mom approached me with teary eyes. "I know I messed up. I've gotten your father's watch back for you." I raised my wrist. The watch was already strapped to it."It was mine to begin with. You weren't making things right by getting it back; you were simpl
