Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
While Chief Hudson rushed me to the interview venue, Nathan was fielding questions from everyone and soaking in the praise.

Some of the parents whose children had been rescued in the human trafficking case even declared their intention to throw a lavish party to thank him.

Soon, my arrival put an end to the cheerful atmosphere.

As soon as the reporters saw me, they pounced on me, bombarding me with questions from all directions.

"Caleb here has a bit of a misunderstanding with Officer Sloan. I brought him over so that we can all clear things up," Chief Hudson said with a friendly smile before giving me a hard shove.

At his words, everyone's eyes widened, eager to hear what I would say.

Looking at the smug Nathan, I pondered briefly before asking with a sneer, "I came to ask you something. Since you claimed that I'd discussed all the cases I previously solved with you, what was the crucial clue that led to the discovery of the culprit in the chapel murder case?"

Chief Hudson's face immediately darkened. The words that came out of my mouth were completely at odds with the instructions he'd given me on the way here.

Before he could confront me about it, however, someone came up to me and slapped me hard across the face.

Just as he'd done in my previous life, Mr. Lowry wagged his finger at me and fumed, "You scoundrel! Not only have you been secretly claiming Nathan's deductions as your own behind my back, but you're still trying to stir up even more trouble now!"

Clutching my swollen cheek, I stared at the agitated Mr. Lowry in shock. For a moment, I couldn't wrap my head around the situation.

Mr. Lowry wasn't done, but Nathan ran over to us and pulled Mr. Lowry behind him.

With feigned indignation and a hurt expression, Nathan said, "Caleb, I really don't know why you're asking me that.

"Have you forgotten that I told you how I saw from the murderer's perspective that he'd organized the hundred-dollar bills in the victim's wallet by their serial numbers after he committed the crime? That's how I was able to determine the murderer suffers from severe obsessive compulsive disorder."

My mind went blank the moment I heard his answer.

The chapel murder case was the case that made me famous during my student days. Because of the murderer's special identity, not a single detail of the investigation had ever been published.

Even all the files I had compiled on the case had been destroyed. I'd been so certain Nathan couldn't possibly know anything about it.

Seeing my ashen face, everyone started mocking me.

"Did you think Nate would've forgotten just because so much time has passed? You wanted to make use of that to prove you didn't steal Nate's deductions, didn't you? How shameless of you!"

"Get the hell out of here! Just being in the same room as you disgusts me!"

"That's right! Get lost!"

The fired-up crowd shoved Chief Hudson and me out of the venue.

Furious that I'd ruined things again, Chief Hudson trembled with rage.

"You're on your own now," he snarled before leaving in the car.

I stood frozen, chuckling bitterly when I recalled how some of the people who'd shoved me earlier were the ones I'd personally saved from the hands of vicious murderers.

Everything felt meaningless now.

Just then, I received a message on my phone. Once I read it, my eyes widened in shock.

"So that's what's going on… No wonder Nathan can always figure out what I'm thinking!"

Laughing, I took out the police badge I'd cherished all along and tossed it into the nearest trash can.

The LED screen outside the mall was playing a news report. A burned body had been found on the outskirts of the city, and the victim's identity stunned everyone.

Raising my brows, I ignored the news and left.

From that moment on, I chose to resign from the police force. Now, I'd like to see how the rising star detective was going to solve this case.

The moment those words came out of the reporter's mouth, the crowd erupted, and Nathan froze, looking completely dumbstruck."That's impossible! You must be mistaken!" he exclaimed."Why is it impossible?" I called out.I'd gotten out of the car and was slowly walking up to Nathan.Smirking, I added, "You've stolen the credit for so many of my cases, Nathan. It's time for you to give it back."Whispers rippled through the crowd.Nathan's face paled at my sudden appearance, but he stubbornly stood his ground and declared, "I don't know what you're talking about. I solved those cases before you could because you're not as good as I am. It's not like I owe you anything!"Unbothered, I nodded along before taking out an audio recorder and holding it high above my head, playing the recording for everyone to hear.It was a recording of an exchange between Nathan and Mr. Lowry, one that took place when he first joined the police force.Nathan's voice sounded smug as he said, "You had

Over the phone, Nathan sounded frazzled as he growled, "Has Caleb figured out what's going on? Why is it that his last deduction was riddled with so many ridiculous mistakes, compared to his previous ones?"Everyone's chewing me out now. Even my superiors have put me on temporary leave and told me to stay home. What should I do now? Hurry up and help me think of something, Mr. Lowry!"Mr. Lowry quickly calmed him down."I just got in touch with Caleb through his old boss, Chief Hudson. He claims that he hasn't been in the right state of mind ever since the setback he suffered from the recent events. But he's feeling a lot better now and plans to investigate the case properly." Hearing that, Nathan immediately tried to tap into my thoughts about the case. Sure enough, it was different from before. This time, my deductions were logical and meticulous. He was thrilled."See? There's nothing to worry about," Mr. Lowry said. "I told you before. Someone like Caleb will never be able t

Mr. Lowry had moved to slam the door shut when he saw me, but after hearing what I said, he hesitated. Angela and I seized this chance to push ourselves into the apartment. As soon as we entered, she started looking around as if searching for something.Pissed, Mr. Lowry wanted to kick us out, but he didn't have the strength to do so. He even had to bend over and catch his breath.I stared at him with mixed emotions."You're the one who teamed up with Nathan to steal my deductions, right?"Mr. Lowry snapped his head up and eyed me warily, but he didn't say a word.I thought about what happened the day I resigned. I'd simply asked Nathan a question, but Mr. Lowry immediately rushed up to me and slapped me.Looking back on it now, I figured he must've already discussed things with Nathan beforehand. He was worried that my questioning might prompt Nathan to let something slip, which was why he became so agitated.I continued to stare at Mr. Lowry, who could barely even stay on his

Everyone watching the livestream was dumbfounded."What happened? Why did the stream cut off?""I thought it was my connection that got cut off, but I did notice the strange looks on the officers' faces."Most people were confused as they tried to understand what was going on. Only some of the more knowledgeable ones realized that something was off."He just said the victim was bound while alive, which is why the body curled up, but high heat alone naturally causes a body to curl.""He also claimed the killer used a flame weeder to burn the body! Was he being serious about that? If that were true, the killer would've had to spend ten to 15 days just sitting there waiting for the body to burn!""Is he really a genius detective? Why does he lack such basic knowledge?""He even insisted he saw the murderer's escape path and claimed the guy lived in the high-end mountainside residential neighborhood in the eastern suburbs. Are you kidding me? Does he know the kinds of big shots that

I couldn't resist chuckling wryly when I heard Chief Hudson's agitated tone."I've already submitted my paperwork for early retirement. I won't be going back there," I said.Chief Hudson's voice sharpened as he snarled, "You're not even 30 years old! What's this nonsense about an early retirement?"I quickly pulled the phone further away from my ear."What's the big deal? You're still on the police force, aren't you? And there's Nathan, too. With that special ability of his case, he can crack any case within minutes, can't he?"Chief Hudson let out an exhausted sigh."Nathan said he found some clues today, but when he went to follow up on them, he was heavily injured by the suspect. He's still unconscious now."Nathan was severely injured and unconscious, huh?I snorted. How could such a coincidence truly exist? He'd supposedly discovered a lead, but instead of sharing it with his colleagues to investigate further, he confidently confronted the suspect alone and allowed himsel

After getting back to my rented apartment, I started typing on my computer."City life is far too complicated. I'm going to retire and enjoy a quiet life instead."After emailing my resignation letter to Chief Hudson, I yanked out the SIM card of my work number and tossed it away. Then, I left with my suitcase to catch the last flight back to my hometown. Now that my phone was not buzzing at all hours of the day, I slept on the plane with an eye mask to keep the light out. It was the best and most restful sleep I'd gotten ever since I joined the police force. When I appeared at the doorstep of my family home with my suitcase in tow, Mom was so emotional that she couldn't stop crying.Clutching my hand, she said, "All that matters is you're home safe. Come on, then. Let me take a good look at you!"Due to the nature of my work, Mom was constantly worried about me.Marie Boone, our housekeeper, quickly took the things out of my hands and welcomed me into the house as well. Now th
