Chapter 2

Autor: M. June
Mom's voice was as gentle as ever as I listened to her voice over the phone. She neither blamed nor questioned me.

"Once I've finished taking care of the family business over the next few days, I'll come over and pick you up in a week."

After we hung up, I got up and went home to pack up my things.

But as soon as I walked in, I saw Linda already sitting on the couch in my favorite silk nightgown. Meanwhile, Oliver stood behind her, gently combing her long blond hair.

Pain spread through my chest. I still remembered him holding a hair dryer on the night of our engagement and looking at me tenderly.

"I'll never dry anyone's hair but yours."

But ever since Linda came back, I finally understood those promises he had given me were nothing but memories.

Oliver looked up at me and said, "Linda doesn't have any clothes here. You have more than you can wear, so I gave her one of your nightgowns."

It had never occurred to him that my clothes, my bedroom, and my privacy were mine and mine alone. He should not have used them to take care of another woman whenever he wanted.

Before I could say anything, he looked at me with irritation. "Selena, why are you only home now? You've been gone all night."

He suddenly came over and grabbed my arm. "What's with that look? Can't you stop doing this every time..."

His grip reopened the wound that had already been treated and it began to bleed again. I hissed and gasped in pain, my whole arm trembled with pain.

Oliver asked, "What's wrong? Did I hurt you?"

I pushed his hand away and then looked to the side, fighting back my tears. "I'm fine. Go look after Linda."

Oliver obviously let out a sigh of relief. "You've been pretty well behaved today. Oh, right, Linda wants you to make her steak. Start cooking right now."

He spoke as if it was a perfectly reasonable request. "She saved my life, and now she's hurt and terminally ill. You understand, don't you?"

Looking at his earnest expression, I felt the last of my love for him finally disappear. "Okay. I'll make it."

After I finished cooking and came out of the kitchen, I saw them sitting side by side on the couch. Linda was all over Oliver.

Looking at it all, I felt nothing.

When I was going back to my room, Oliver suddenly followed me and leaned in to kiss my cheek.

"Selena, you're not angry, are you? You're so much more understanding today. I'm glad you're finally showing Linda some concern. Don't worry. As long as you stop picking on her, our wedding will go ahead next week as planned."

But by next week, I would be going home with my mom.

  • My Ebbing Love   Chapter 9

Lucien's hand tightened around mine, his expression and actions told me everything. "Yes, but not out of malice. I just wanted him to know what a wonderful woman he'd lost. He said he loved you, but he ignored you and let you get hurt. He even locked you in the basement because of her. I wanted him to learn the truth and then lose you for good. I'm sorry, I..." Lucien looked into my eyes, with only heartache in his eyes. He was right. Oliver said he loved me, but he had hurt me in so many ways. He had always treated Linda better than he treated me. If I could not feel his love, it was not there. Oliver struggled violently. "Selena, he tried to split us up on purpose! Then he tricked you into agreeing to marry him! Please break up with him! We can still get married!" I only gave Oliver one glance before turning back to Lucien. "So what if he lied to me? That's between us. Throw him out. I don't want him disrupting our engagement party." I took Lucien's hand and walked towa

Lucien told me he had known all along that I was the one who saved him. He had wanted to pursue me, but I was already engaged with Oliver by then. He thought he would never have a chance with me. Lucien took my hand and kissed the back of my hand with reverence. "Selena, Oliver didn't know how to cherish you. He gave me a chance to steal you away. Let me love you this time!" I squeezed his hand, and something seemed to fill the emptiness in my heart. After that, we officially started dating. Our families also began discussing the arrangements for a marriage alliance. I had thought Oliver was out of my life, but he barged into my engagement party with Lucien suddenly. He charged at Lucien, and they began to fight. "You son of a…! You stole Selena from me on purpose! You knew all along she was the one who saved us! Why did you lie to me?!" Lucien chuckled and took two steps back, avoiding Oliver's attack. "Oliver, Linda's the woman who saved your life. Please don't disrupt

Oliver's expression was stained with madness. He was reaching for me several times, as if he wanted to drag me away. "No! I still love you! I don't want to end our relationship. Selena, come back to me. We've been together for five years. You can't just decide to leave me! Is it because of this man? Have you fallen for someone else? Is that why you want to leave me?" His voice was full of anger, drawing the attention of the other guests. Lucien's expression darkened. He signaled to his men to calm the guests, then grabbed Oliver and hauled him outside. Linda stepped forward. "Let go of Oliver..." However, Oliver cut her off before she could finish. "Selena! You said you would love me forever and never leave me! Have you forgotten all that?" I watched silently as Oliver struggled and failed to break free. For all his grace, I had never expected Lucien to be so strong. I shook my head and pushed the chaotic thoughts away. "Oliver, I was never the one who forgot those promis

Soon after I got home, Mom arranged my first meeting with Lucien. He was nothing like the mafia men I'd imagined. I had envisioned a man with bulging muscles with a cigar in his mouth. Instead, he came to us wearing a formal tailcoat with a gracious smile. He even bowed and kissed my hand. The way he greeted me was flawless. I could not help but be charmed. "Hello, I'm Lucien. It's a pleasure to meet you." He looked like a gentleman straight out of a novel. We walked into a restaurant called the Verado Restaurant together. As soon as I stepped inside, I heard a familiar voice. "Who'll help me once you're gone? You have to tell Oliver my terminal illness has gotten worse. I have to marry him before the truth comes out!" I turned toward the voice. The woman was wearing a headscarf and I could not see her face, but there was something familiar about her… A familiar looking middle-aged man sat across from her, frowning. "Ms. Fletcher, please go. I really can't help you

"Find her!" Oliver grabbed the man's collar and threw him aside, his face filled with anger. The bodyguard said, "Sir, we've checked every road to the chapel, and we can't reach her by phone either..." Linda stepped close with a faint smile and whispered in Oliver's ear. "She's probably just jealous and is hiding on purpose, waiting for you to find her." Oliver's expression finally calmed down. He pulled out his phone and called me, but it wouldn't even connect. "Put the wedding on hold! I'll go get her myself!" He clenched his fists and hurried out. Jealousy flashed in Linda's eyes as she followed him into the car. "I'll go back with you. Selena must be blaming me, so I'll go and apologize to her." The car raced back and stopped outside the manor. It was far too quiet inside. Oliver looked around, and panic appeared on his face. He called my name as he walked through the manor, but no one answered. He searched every room, but I was nowhere to be found. Then he rushed i

The house staff held my arms and shoved me into the damp basement. Just as the door closed, I saw Oliver and Linda kissing deeply, their fingers locked with each other. The windowless basement was pitch black. I had no idea how much time had passed until I heard faint footsteps outside the door. I held my breath. Linda's voice came in the next moment. "Selena, I'm the one Oliver loves. No matter how much time passes, it'll always be me. You're worth less to him than a dog, you witch. You should leave while you still can, or I'll make you regret it!" I ignored her. Instead, I texted my mom. Early the next morning, the basement door banged open. A muscular man about six foot seven tall stood in the doorway. "Ms. Bennett, Mr. Howard says you have to walk to the wedding chapel yourself." "I understand." I nodded at him and headed upstairs to my room. Oliver had already taken Linda to the chapel early that morning. He did not even remember he had asked for me to not go t
