Chapter 3

Autor: M. June
The day before the wedding, I ate breakfast in the living room.

Linda glared at me with open resentment across the table. Then, she suddenly said, "Selena, do you really think Oliver married you because he loved you?"

I had a calm expression on my face and softly asked, "What do you mean?"

"To Oliver, I'm more than the woman who saved his life. If I hadn't turned down his proposal back then, you never would've married him!

"I should've been his bride! He chose you because you do what you're told, Selena, but I'm the love of his life! Everything about you is so laughable!

"Oliver said once I came back, we'd have our whole lives to start over!"

I let out a small chuckle and put down my fork, then I looked her in the eye with curiosity. "I see… And then?"

Linda kept glaring furiously at me. "Don't get so smug! I wasn't really hurt at all. I just told Oliver my hand hurt, and he got so worried he took me to a doctor."

She stood up and then placed both hands on the table, fuming.

I simply nodded. "Aren't you afraid I'll expose you?"

Linda scoffed; she didn't even take me seriously. "You think Oliver didn't see you were hurt? He just didn't care. Even if you died right in front of him, the only person he cares about is still me. You'll only humiliate yourself if you stay with him!"

I shrugged. "You're right. I hope you get what you want, then."

Five years ago, the smallest scrape on me would send Oliver into a panic. He would blame himself over and over.

Five years later, he had ignored his far more seriously injured fiancee because of Linda.

Maybe we still loved each other, but I doubted I would ever forget the sight of him instinctively shielding her at the party.

That was why I had already made up my mind. I was done with this version of Oliver!

I got up to go to my room and packed up, waiting for the car my mom had sent to pick me up.

I had barely started going up the stairs when Linda chased after me. She stopped beside me and gave me a spiteful smile.

"Selena, just you wait!"

Then she screamed in apparent terror.

"Selena! I really won't steal Oliver from you! Please leave me alone! Help..."

She let go of the railing and pitched forward, tumbling down the stairs.

I jumped in surprise. Before I could move, Oliver's tall figure appeared by the stairway. "Linda! What happened?"

He quickly crouched down and pulled her close. Then, he glared at me furiously. "Get a doctor here! Now!"

Oliver carried Linda to the sofa after he finished yelling that.

"Oliver, I... I'm alright," Linda said. "I'm sure Selena didn't mean to push me. She just loves you too much."

Linda gripped his clothes with a trembling hand, tears trickling down her cheeks.

"Don't be angry with her... You should send me back to the nursing home. I'm causing you two so much trouble by staying here. And with my condition, I can't take much more of this..."

"No, Linda. You're not the one who should leave." Oliver gently pressed a finger to her lips. "Stay here and get better. I won't let anyone hurt you again!"

After comforting Linda, Oliver turned to me with almost no emotions in his eyes. "Selena, your jealousy is terrifying. Do you have anything to say for yourself?"

I opened my mouth and ran through the things I could say in my defense. But seeing the two of them clinging to each other, I no longer felt like explaining.

"Oliver, if you've already decided what happened, what's the point of me saying anything?"

Veins popped out on Oliver's face. He snatched a vase from the nearby table and smashed it on the floor. Bright rose petals drifted to the floor, just like how our marriage was already falling apart before it started.

"Someone!" Oliver clenched his teeth, struggling to contain his anger as he ordered, "Lock Selena in the basement! Let her reflect about what she has done. Don't let her out until just before the wedding tomorrow. No one sees her without my permission!"

  • My Ebbing Love   Chapter 9

Lucien's hand tightened around mine, his expression and actions told me everything. "Yes, but not out of malice. I just wanted him to know what a wonderful woman he'd lost. He said he loved you, but he ignored you and let you get hurt. He even locked you in the basement because of her. I wanted him to learn the truth and then lose you for good. I'm sorry, I..." Lucien looked into my eyes, with only heartache in his eyes. He was right. Oliver said he loved me, but he had hurt me in so many ways. He had always treated Linda better than he treated me. If I could not feel his love, it was not there. Oliver struggled violently. "Selena, he tried to split us up on purpose! Then he tricked you into agreeing to marry him! Please break up with him! We can still get married!" I only gave Oliver one glance before turning back to Lucien. "So what if he lied to me? That's between us. Throw him out. I don't want him disrupting our engagement party." I took Lucien's hand and walked towa

  • My Ebbing Love   Chapter 8

Lucien told me he had known all along that I was the one who saved him. He had wanted to pursue me, but I was already engaged with Oliver by then. He thought he would never have a chance with me. Lucien took my hand and kissed the back of my hand with reverence. "Selena, Oliver didn't know how to cherish you. He gave me a chance to steal you away. Let me love you this time!" I squeezed his hand, and something seemed to fill the emptiness in my heart. After that, we officially started dating. Our families also began discussing the arrangements for a marriage alliance. I had thought Oliver was out of my life, but he barged into my engagement party with Lucien suddenly. He charged at Lucien, and they began to fight. "You son of a…! You stole Selena from me on purpose! You knew all along she was the one who saved us! Why did you lie to me?!" Lucien chuckled and took two steps back, avoiding Oliver's attack. "Oliver, Linda's the woman who saved your life. Please don't disrupt

Oliver's expression was stained with madness. He was reaching for me several times, as if he wanted to drag me away. "No! I still love you! I don't want to end our relationship. Selena, come back to me. We've been together for five years. You can't just decide to leave me! Is it because of this man? Have you fallen for someone else? Is that why you want to leave me?" His voice was full of anger, drawing the attention of the other guests. Lucien's expression darkened. He signaled to his men to calm the guests, then grabbed Oliver and hauled him outside. Linda stepped forward. "Let go of Oliver..." However, Oliver cut her off before she could finish. "Selena! You said you would love me forever and never leave me! Have you forgotten all that?" I watched silently as Oliver struggled and failed to break free. For all his grace, I had never expected Lucien to be so strong. I shook my head and pushed the chaotic thoughts away. "Oliver, I was never the one who forgot those promis

Soon after I got home, Mom arranged my first meeting with Lucien. He was nothing like the mafia men I'd imagined. I had envisioned a man with bulging muscles with a cigar in his mouth. Instead, he came to us wearing a formal tailcoat with a gracious smile. He even bowed and kissed my hand. The way he greeted me was flawless. I could not help but be charmed. "Hello, I'm Lucien. It's a pleasure to meet you." He looked like a gentleman straight out of a novel. We walked into a restaurant called the Verado Restaurant together. As soon as I stepped inside, I heard a familiar voice. "Who'll help me once you're gone? You have to tell Oliver my terminal illness has gotten worse. I have to marry him before the truth comes out!" I turned toward the voice. The woman was wearing a headscarf and I could not see her face, but there was something familiar about her… A familiar looking middle-aged man sat across from her, frowning. "Ms. Fletcher, please go. I really can't help you

"Find her!" Oliver grabbed the man's collar and threw him aside, his face filled with anger. The bodyguard said, "Sir, we've checked every road to the chapel, and we can't reach her by phone either..." Linda stepped close with a faint smile and whispered in Oliver's ear. "She's probably just jealous and is hiding on purpose, waiting for you to find her." Oliver's expression finally calmed down. He pulled out his phone and called me, but it wouldn't even connect. "Put the wedding on hold! I'll go get her myself!" He clenched his fists and hurried out. Jealousy flashed in Linda's eyes as she followed him into the car. "I'll go back with you. Selena must be blaming me, so I'll go and apologize to her." The car raced back and stopped outside the manor. It was far too quiet inside. Oliver looked around, and panic appeared on his face. He called my name as he walked through the manor, but no one answered. He searched every room, but I was nowhere to be found. Then he rushed i

  • My Ebbing Love   Chapter 4

The house staff held my arms and shoved me into the damp basement. Just as the door closed, I saw Oliver and Linda kissing deeply, their fingers locked with each other. The windowless basement was pitch black. I had no idea how much time had passed until I heard faint footsteps outside the door. I held my breath. Linda's voice came in the next moment. "Selena, I'm the one Oliver loves. No matter how much time passes, it'll always be me. You're worth less to him than a dog, you witch. You should leave while you still can, or I'll make you regret it!" I ignored her. Instead, I texted my mom. Early the next morning, the basement door banged open. A muscular man about six foot seven tall stood in the doorway. "Ms. Bennett, Mr. Howard says you have to walk to the wedding chapel yourself." "I understand." I nodded at him and headed upstairs to my room. Oliver had already taken Linda to the chapel early that morning. He did not even remember he had asked for me to not go t
