Adrien's POV - Monday Morning

I stood in the shower for forty minutes.

Water as hot as I could stand. Trying to wash away the weekend. Trying to wash away the choices. Trying to wash away the guilt.

It didn't work.

Nothing would work.

Because the problem wasn't on my skin. It was underneath. In my bones. In my fractured mind. In whatever remained of my soul.

I'd crossed lines I couldn't uncross.

Made choices I couldn't unmake.

Become someone I didn't recognize.

The bathroom mirror was fogged. I wiped it clear with my hand.

Marcus Bennett's face stared back. Surgically altered. Carefully constructed. The face of a man who didn't exist.

Except he did exist now. More real than Adrien Sterling ever was.

My encrypted phone sat on the counter. Elena's message from last night is still unanswered.

Are you okay?

Three words. Simple question.

Impossible to answer.

Because I wasn't okay. Hadn't been okay in months. Maybe years.

But I couldn't tell her that. Couldn't explain what I'd done. What I

Elena's POVThe next seven days were torture.I monitored every email Miguel intercepted. Watched Adrien's relationship with Morgan deepen. Watched him lie to her. Lie to us. Build a fantasy that would collapse the moment truth emerged.Day One: Dinner at her apartment. Security logs indicated that he left at 2 AM. She kissed him goodbye at the door.Day Two: He sent her flowers. Card read: Thank you for seeing me. -MDay Three: Lunch together. Public. At a restaurant where Apex executives saw them. No more hiding. Official.Day Four: Morgan sent apartment listings. He responded with favorites. Marking them: Love this one. Let's schedule a viewing.Day Five: He bought her a bracelet. Expensive. Personal. The kind of gift you give someone you love.Day Six: They spent the entire weekend together. Saturday and Sunday. Completely off-grid. Just together.Day Seven: Monday morning. The final day. The deadline I'd given myself before releasing the data.Miguel's laptop pinged.New email. F

Elena's POVSeventy-two hours. That's what he'd said. Extraction in 72 hours.I counted everyone.Hour one: Monday morning. His message said the extraction was set. That it mattered.Hour twelve: Monday evening. No contact. But that was expected. He was maintaining cover.Hour twenty-four: Tuesday morning. Still nothing. I told myself he was preparing. Being careful.Hour forty-eight: Wednesday morning. The extraction window was closing. I checked weapons. Reviewed contingency plans.Hour seventy-two: Thursday noon. The deadline.Nothing.No coordinates. No signal. No extraction.Just silence."Maybe he's delayed," Miguel said from his laptop. "Complications with the timeline.""He would have messaged. Warned us.""Not if he couldn't. Not if something went wrong.""Then check. Check everything. Tell me if he's been compromised."Miguel's fingers flew across the keyboard. "I'm monitoring Apex's internal systems. No alerts. No security breaches. No indication of compromise. If Adrien we

Adrien pov:Morgan talked about her childhood. About growing up powerless and deciding never to be that way again."I know I've done terrible things," she said as we sat by the lake. "I know people see me as a monster. And maybe they're right. But Marcus, I didn't start out wanting to hurt people. I just wanted to be safe."I should hate her. Should remember the victims. But I just listened. And felt sympathy. Understanding.Because wasn't I doing the same thing? Hadn't I lost track of where necessity ended and choice began?"Power corrupts," I said quietly. "You start justifying small compromises. Then bigger ones. Until you look back and don't recognize who you've become.""Is that what happened to you?""Yes." The truth. Raw. Honest. "I started with good intentions. But the methods," I stopped. "The methods changed me. Made me into someone I'm not sure I like.""But you're not a bad person, Marcus. I can see that."If only she knew. If only she understood that "Marcus Bennett" was

  • My Ex, My Ruin   Chapter 62: Surveillance

Elena's POVFourteen days since the handoff. Since I'd seen Adrien's cold eyes and heard Marcus Bennett's controlled voice.Fourteen days of silence broken only by brief encrypted messages:Operational. No compromise. -MBTimeline progressing. -MBMaintaining cover. -MBAlways signed MB. Never A. Never Adrien.Like that person didn't exist anymore.I spent the days training. Running. Anything to keep my body moving so my mind couldn't catch up with the fear. The fear that I'd lost him. That the man who came back, if he came back, wouldn't be anyone I recognized.Miguel spent the days analyzing the data. Building the release strategy. And monitoring Apex's internal communications."We need to know if Marcus is compromised," he explained. "If Morgan suspects anything. If his cover is holding."So he hacked into Apex's security systems. Their email servers. Their scheduling networks. Their digital infrastructure.Looking for threats.Instead, he found something worse.I was running when

  • My Ex, My Ruin   Chapter 61: The Handoff

Elena's POVThe phone buzzed at 4 AM.I was already awake. It had been for hours. Couldn't sleep knowing Adrien was about to risk everything.Miguel grabbed his laptop before I could reach the phone. One message. Coordinates. A timestamp. And four words:Brief handoff only. 6 hours. My stomach dropped. "Handoff? Not extraction?"Miguel's face was grim. "He's not extracting yet.""What do you mean he's not?""Look at the message, Elena. He said Handoff. He's delivering the data, but he's not coming with us.""That wasn't the plan.""The plan changed. Or maybe it was always this way, and he couldn't tell us until now." Miguel pulled up maps. "Newark. Same private airfield. Six hours from now.""Why would he?" But I already knew. Already understood. "If Marcus Bennett disappears the same day the data is stolen, Morgan knows immediately who betrayed her.""Exactly. He has to go back. Maintain his routine. Wait for the right moment to" Miguel stopped."To what?""To stage his extraction in
