Chapter 4

Author: Seize The Day
Three days later, I found myself in the luxury goods section of Grandfield Mall. I was accompanying the company's newly appointed CEO, Scott Jennings, as we inspected the shops in the mall.

Scott was a top executive who appeared out of nowhere in the investment industry. He was brutally decisive and efficient, and he carried himself with a cold and refined demeanor.

I had just secured a research and development project that was worth over ten million dollars.

Scott had brought me to the mall that day to pick out a presentable outfit. We were scheduled to meet with the core partners of the project for dinner that evening.

"Why don't you try that suit, Ms. Spencer?" Scott suggested while pointing at a beautifully tailored suit.

I had just picked up the suit when Julian's mocking voice resounded from behind me. "Well, if it isn't Ms. Spencer, the poor wretch who doesn't even have 19,000 dollars to her name."

I turned around.

Julian and Hannah were standing a short distance away. Arm in arm, they stared at me with disdain.

It was obvious that they had dropped by the mall for some retail therapy after I kicked them out of the house.

Julian scrutinized the suit that I was holding and scoffed.

"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Are you visiting this store to enjoy their free air-conditioning after I kicked you to the curb?"

"That suit costs a few thousand dollars. Are you sure that you can afford it if you accidentally damage it?" Julian snapped, intentionally raising his voice to catch the attention of the sales assistants and other patrons.

That familiar tactic of public humiliation and intimidation was Julian's go-to over the last three years.

"Don't talk about Charlotte like that, Julian," Hannah chimed in, her voice dripping with insincerity. "She's just looking at it. After all, it's not easy to earn money."

Julian scoffed and dragged Hannah over to the counter where the watches were displayed. He pointed at a luxury watch that cost 30,000 dollars and said, "Box this up for me."

He shot me a provocative look, his eyes glimmering with pride as he said, "Take a good look. This is how a woman deserves to be treated. Hannah's entering the public sector soon. This watch is a perfect match for her. As for you, you're only worthy of picking up trash for the rest of your life!"

He haughtily pulled out a card from his bag, balancing it between two fingers as he handed it to the sales assistant.

It was the supplementary card that I had given him in the past.

Julian assumed that I had only removed my card details from his phone's payment options. He probably had no idea that I had already stopped by the bank to freeze all my cards still in his possession.

The sales assistant took the card and swiped it across the terminal, but the screen flashed red.

"My apologies, sir. The system has detected that this card has already been frozen by its owner," the sales assistant explained politely as he handed the card back to Julian.

Julian's smug expression stiffened.

"That's impossible!" he exclaimed. "Swipe it again!"

The sales assistant did as he was told, but the outcome was the same. The payment didn't go through.

The people around us shot strange looks at Julian.

Hannah looked incredibly awkward and reflexively let go of Julian's hand.

I scoffed and stepped forward. "Mr. Hendricks, it's a little inappropriate for you to use your ex-wife's card to spend on your mistress, don't you agree?

"Also, just a heads-up, the court summons regarding the 300,000 dollar dissipation of marital assets will be delivered to you tomorrow. I hope that you're ready to pay the penalty in any way that you can."

The color drained from Julian's face. He pointed an accusing finger at me and shouted, "Charlotte, you fucking bitch! How dare you set me up like this? You think freezing a card scares me? A broke nobody like you doesn't deserve to run your mouth in front of me!"

Julian lunged at me and tried to slap me.

"Security! Kick this lunatic out of the premises!"

Scott stepped in, flanked by two bodyguards. He didn't even spare a glance at Julian as he walked over to me.

"You're still not done dealing with this trivial matter, Ms. Spencer? The directors and business partners are waiting to meet you at tonight's dinner."

A deathly silence descended upon the store the moment the words left Scott's lips.

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide with shock. "B-Business partners?" he stammered.

Scott glanced at him before turning his attention to the sales assistant, saying calmly, "Pack up the suit that Ms. Spencer was looking at earlier. Include the watch as well. Charge the items to my personal tab. Record the purchase as a welcome gift from the company to Ms. Spencer."

Julian had a complete mental breakdown.

I accepted the coat that Scott offered me and didn't spare another glance at Julian. We left the store together.

Hannah's voice resounded from behind us, full of disdain. "Why did you try to show off when you have no money? How humiliating!"

She shoved Julian's hand away and left the store without sparing a glance at him.

Julian's whole body was trembling when he crumpled to the floor.

The founder, Charlotte Spencer's net worth has exceeded 500 million dollars…"The anchor's voice echoed around the square.A man wearing a sanitation worker's vest and a mask was standing next to a trash can in the square. Mustering all the strength that he had, he stomped on a cardboard box until it flattened. He jolted when he heard my name. He slowly lifted his head and stared in a daze at my refined and radiant appearance on the screen. The man was none other than Julian. He was convicted of attempted extortion and theft of trade secrets, and was sentenced to ten months in p

The sounds of wailing sirens faded into the distance as the police cars sped away from Jewel Park Hotel.Peace had been restored in the grand hall, but the atmosphere was buzzing with lively energy.Investors valued skills and wits above all else. By baiting Julian into exposing his true colors, not only did I exterminate a hidden danger, but I also proved my counter-surveillance and risk control capabilities to Brightstar Capital.Scott raised his champagne glass and clinked it against my own."Well done, Ms. Spencer. Brightstar needs a ruthless and efficient partner like you.""You flatter me, Mr. Jennings. I was simply cleaning out the trash."We downed our glasses in one go.The contract that was worth ten million options was officially signed.…Three days later, I visited Julian in the detention center.I studied him through the thick glass in the visitor's room.Although only three days had passed since our confrontation at the hotel, he looked as if he had aged decad

The air in the hall seemed to freeze.Peter was sweating profusely when he hurried over to Scott's side."We have to stop the contract signing now if there's a property rights dispute, Mr. Jennings," he said in almost a whisper. "The shareholders…"Scott didn't say a single word. Instead, he turned to look at me with a scrutinizing gaze.Julian's arrogance grew when he noticed Scott's reaction. He slapped the USB drive on the table beside the champagne tower and exclaimed, "What's wrong? Can't cough up five million dollars? I'm willing to accept three million dollars if that's the case!"I'll immediately destroy the evidence once the money's in my account. This is your last chance, Charlotte!"He then pulled out his phone and pulled up his QR code.I let out a soft chuckle as I took in Julian's hideous and fierce expression. It was obvious that he believed that he had the upper hand.My low chuckles slowly morphed into uncontrollable chortles. The sounds of my laughter were esp

As a result, an enforcement notice was released regarding his 300,000 dollar debt with overdue interest. His cards and payment apps were also frozen. He had become an actual scum of society.…I sat in my office, watching a clip from the surveillance cameras. I had retrieved the footage from the company's security room.Last night, at around 2:00 am, a janitor wearing a baseball cap had trespassed into my private office using a master keycard. The uniformed men approached me with handcuffs. The onlookers subconsciously took a few steps back. The color had drained from my parents' faces. They struggled to stand from their wheelchairs, wanting to plead for mercy on my behalf.I stopped them. Then, I glared at Vincent and demanded, "You want to take me away when you don't have any court summons or case filings? What gives you the right to do that?"Vincent scoffed and tapped his cigarette, letting the ashes flutter to the ground. "We've received public reports accusing you of economic fraud. Take her away!"Julian cackled loudly. "So what if you have ten million options, Charlotte? They're completely worthless in the face of authority! I might consider asking Uncle Vincent to give you a second chance if you get on your knees and grovel at my feet."I didn't budge. The handcuffs were inches away from my wrists when a cool, masculine voice resounded from the stairs."Who dares to lay a hand on my business partner?"It wa

I slid into Scott's car. A faint scent of pine permeated the interior of the car.Scott handed a document to me, saying, "This is the last confirmation for the project handover. Ten million in stock options will be credited into your account next week once you sign it."I grabbed the pen and penned my signature on the dotted line.I didn't ask Scott why he helped me out earlier. Investors weren't interested in people who couldn't benefit them. I knew that he was interested in me because of my skills."Your ex-husband will lose it when he finds out about your current net worth," Scott said calmly as he looked out the window.I chuckled. "He won't have any time to find out. He'll be scrambling to collect money once the court summons is delivered to him tomorrow."…The next morning, the court summons regarding the 300,000 dollars dissipation of marital assets was delivered to Julian.Cecilia shot me a text message.
