Chapter 4

Author: Her Eyes
I took a deep breath and forced back my tears.

I hadn't paid off the debt yet, and Mom's ashes were still in the hands of those loan sharks. I couldn't afford to give up now.

"Fine. I'll do it."

The CEO's office on the top floor was as vast as a palace.

Adriana sat in her leather chair, looking me over in my cheap clothes as I stood there in silence. A complex emotion flashed through her eyes, as if she was deeply pleased to see me finally lower my head.

"Have a seat." She stood up and walked over to the safe. Once there, she entered the code and took out an exquisite mahogany box.

She opened it, and inside lay a yellowed IOU.

I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails dug into my palms.

When Adriana's parents passed away ten years ago, her so-called relatives swooped in and stripped every domestic asset clean. All they left her was a mountain of crushing debt.

It was Mom who sold our family's two shopfronts to fill that hole for a girl who wasn't even her own blood.

That day, Adriana knelt in the living room, sobbing and apologizing for dragging us down with her.

Mom, kindhearted as always and afraid of wounding Adriana's pride, tore off a piece of paper and wrote this IOU on the spot.

She said the money was just a loan, and Adriana could pay it back when she was older and had made something of herself.

However, Mom hadn't even signed it, so how could this be an IOU? If anything, it was nothing more than a merciful adult's instinct to shelter a child from the storm.

Back then, Adriana had tucked the IOU away like it was the most precious thing in the world.

Now, she ran her fingers over it and said with a rare softness in her voice, "Isaac, look. I've kept it all this time. Mrs. Graham wouldn't let me sign it back then. She said I would grow up and make something of myself.

"And now I have. I recovered all of my family's assets that were held overseas. I'm here to repay Mrs. Graham's kindness. I haven't forgotten what she did for me. I can honor this IOU 100 times over now."

She lifted her head and looked at me with burning intensity.

But as I stared at that IOU, I forced a smile that looked even worse than crying.

What a deeply heartfelt way to repay a kindness—except the dead could not receive anything, could they?

With a frown, Adriana pulled out a tissue and handed it to me.

"Alright, drop the tragic hero act. I've booked a Michelin-starred restaurant for tonight. Go pick up Mrs. Graham, and we'll have dinner together. I'll explain everything to her myself. Even if she never forgives me, I'll still take care of her for the rest of her life."

"Dinner?"

I didn't take the tissue. Instead, I just wiped my face roughly with my hand and looked at Adriana, standing there so confident and self-assured.

She looked exactly the way Mom had always hoped she would grow up to be.

What a shame.

"Adriana, Mom can't make it to dinner. And you will never be able to repay her."

Adriana's expression darkened.

"Isaac, how much longer are you going to keep this up? Yes, I know it was wrong of me to leave when Mrs. Graham was having health problems. But everything I did was for our future. I have the best medical team and more than enough money now.

"Whatever is wrong with Mrs. Graham, I can get her the treatment she needs. Why do you keep getting in my way? Are you really going to gamble with Mrs. Graham's life just to spite me?"

I pulled a crumpled, folded sheet of paper from my faded canvas bag. Slowly, I smoothed it out and placed it right in front of Adriana.

It was a death certificate with Mom's name on it.

"Adriana, look closely. Mom is dead. So, tell me, how exactly are you going to repay her now?"

A harsh, fractured noise echoed through the villa, rattling Adriana until her face went deathly pale."Adriana, you think you're some kind of savior just because you bought back this villa and this piano? Every corner of this villa and every breath of air in here reminds me of who Mom died for!"You can't buy back Mom's life or my hands! Whether it's three years ago or ten years ago, we can never go back to the way things were!"I grabbed a thousand-dollar antique vase from a nearby table and hurled it to the floor.Shards flew everywhere, cutting Adriana's calf. Beads of blood began to seep through. Yet, she didn't seem to feel any pain. Instead, she just stared blankly at my scarred hand, the light in her eyes dimming little by little. After that day, Adriana fell seriously ill.I heard she was burning up with fever, calling out "Mrs. Graham" and my name over and over in her delirium. When she finally woke, she became completely withdrawn. It finally dawned on her that no matt

But no one answered me.The van sped through the streets and finally pulled up in front of a familiar villa. The moment I saw it, the blood in my veins ran cold. This was where my family had lived before we went bankrupt. It had held my entire childhood. The front door swung open, and the furnishings inside were exactly as I remembered them. The handwoven rug in the living room, the oil paintings on the walls, and even the little ornament with the chipped corner by the entryway—everything had been restored down to the last detail.Adriana stood at the foot of the staircase. In an attempt to manufacture some false sense of warmth, she wore a white shirt just like the ones from her teenage years. It was as if she believed that by simply recreating the scene, she could erase all the bloody history between us.She smiled and reached out her hand to me, her eyes glittering with an almost desperate hope."Isaac, look. I bought back our home. From now on, you can live here. No more wo

A long procession of black hearses stretched down the road. Dignitaries and elites from all over the city came to pay their respects.Adriana wore a black mourning dress. She had grown so thin she was barely recognizable. She knelt before the headstone for what felt like an eternity, pressing her forehead against the cold marble again and again until blood began to seep through."Mrs. Graham, I failed you. I came too late."Her wails were so heart-wrenching that those who heard them grieved, and those who saw her wept. The guests around her whispered among themselves."Ms. Hampton is truly loyal and devoted. Her foster mother passed away so long ago, yet she's still this heartbroken.""Indeed. I heard that when the Hampton family fell on hard times, her foster mother lent them a helping hand. Now Ms. Hampton is repaying that kindness a thousandfold."I stood to the side in plain black, holding a bouquet of white chrysanthemums. All I felt was a bitter, suffocating irony. What

Just as the scar-faced man was about to pry open the lid, a black Maybach came crashing through the trash cans and barreled straight into the alley. Its front end slammed hard into a van, sending the thugs scattering in every direction.Adriana jumped out of the car, her eyes bloodshot. She was gripping a golf club and swinging it like a madwoman.Right behind her, two hulking bodyguards in black suits leaped out of the back seat. In seconds, they had the thugs pinned to the ground and beaten to the pulp."Who gave you the right to hurt him or touch Mrs. Graham?"Adriana's expensive dress was splattered with mud. She even tore off her high heels and slammed one hard against the scar-faced man's head.Only after the bodyguards had the situation under control did she finally stop. Trembling, she pulled a checkbook out of her bag. Then, she scribbled a figure and flung it in the scar-faced man's face."Take the money and get lost! If I ever see you anywhere near Isaac again, I'll h

That champagne was so beautiful. The tower of crystal glasses shimmered under the lights like something out of a dream.A handsome man slid his arm around Adriana's waist, cooing compliments and calling her the "Queen of Gambling".Outside the window, the snow was falling just as heavily. But instead of the cold, all she felt was the adrenaline rushing in her veins."Mrs. Graham, Isaac, once I win everything back, I'll bring you here to see the snow."Back then, she had traded the stolen 300 thousand dollars for a ticket to a new life. She won the whole world and secured a brilliant future, but the one thing she lost was the woman who had picked her up out of the snow all those years ago and raised her as her own.Adriana stood up. She swayed unsteadily on her feet, as if she could see those dazzling, glittering lights once again.Only now, hanging from every wick was Mom.Unable to hold it in any longer, she doubled over the trash can and retched violently. Adriana stared at that thin sheet of paper on the desk. The shock in her eyes twisted slowly into fury, as if she had been played for a fool. She shot to her feet and swept the death certificate off the desk. The paper fluttered through the air and landed beside her expensive high heels, like the inconsequential snow on the night Mom passed away."Isaac!" She gritted her teeth, her voice barely containing the rage boiling beneath it. "Mrs. Graham's health problems weren't that severe. How could she be gone over a few hundred thousand dollars?"You'd go so far as to forge a death certificate just to get back at me for leaving and to keep me from seeing her? Cursing your own mother to death? That's your idea of being a devoted son? When did you become so vicious?"Watching her hysterically trying to deny it, I felt strangely calm. I neither defended myself nor screamed.I simply bent down to pick up the death certificate. Then, I carefully brushed off the dust before slipping it ba
