Emily

We took the road home, and the more I thought about what she’d said, the faster my heart pumped, leaving me in a terrible state.

My dad was going through a tough time—she didn’t know him or what he’d been through. I knew that wasn’t an excuse for bad decisions, but I understood him. It took me a while to realize he was in a situation so similar to mine five years ago, but now that I finally got it, I wouldn’t let anyone diminish him. He was fighting—had been fighting since Mom got sick. Both he and I made the worst choices in our moments of struggle, and we’d have to live with the consequences for the rest of our lives. But I wasn’t going to sit by and watch people crucify him.

“Emily, you okay?” Marcos asked, pulling me out of my deep thoughts. “You’re muttering to yourself,” he said with a smile. We’d already stopped, and I hadn’t even noticed.

“I’m not crazy, if that’s what you’re thinking,” I mumbled, making him grin wider, which suddenly eased my heart.

He flipped us, laying me on the floor, and stripped off his sweatpants and underwear. His caresses continued as he struggled with my jeans, which clung to my body. We laughed, fumbling to get them off quickly, but the moment his lips touched my skin again, my laughter turned to desire. He kissed me slowly, his tongue tracing mine as his hands roamed my body, leaving me in an almost torturous state of anticipation. Our ragged breaths clashed, and when Marcos touched my clit, I moaned. It was torture after five days without him, his mouth, his touch.“Marcos,” I moaned his name, hoping he’d speed up. I was in a hurry. His cock entered me slowly, drawing a long moan from me. He pressed our foreheads together, thrusting slowly as we locked eyes. I dug my nails into his skin—he was driving me insane.I couldn’t help it and ground against him. Marcos growled, his rhythm shifting to harder thrusts. Soon, the sound of our bare skin slapping together and our increasingly loud moans filled the

EmilyHe was truly hurt, his rigid posture and avoidance of eye contact showing a Marcos I didn’t recognize.“I’m not leaving. There’s nothing you can do to make me go,” I said firmly, watching his stance stiffen even more.“Just go, Emily. Please!” he muttered, heading toward the bedrooms, and I followed.“No use, Marcos Almeida. Even if the police show up, I’m not leaving. Not a chance!” I declared, determined, only to receive another shake of his head. “What’s your problem? Talk to me, cry, yell, break something, Marcos! I can’t stand seeing you in this lifeless state of suffering anymore!” I shouted, furious at being ignored. “At least look at me, damn it!”Then he turned, his breathing suddenly ragged, nostrils flaring as if grasping for air. His light eyes were stormy, brimming with unshed tears, dark circles marking his face, revealing sleepless nights. Even his beard had grown longer.“My problem? What’s your problem, Emily? What’s in your head to come here, to get back with m

  • My Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 55

EmilyFive days had passed since I last spoke to Marcos—five damn days since he ran out of the cabin, leaving me behind. I tried to keep my mind occupied during that time. I went out with the girls, shopped with Helen and Sara in the next town, and finished painting the cabin. But nothing I did made time move faster. I kept catching myself thinking of something from my day I wanted to share with him or seeing something that would suit him perfectly. Everything circled back to how much I needed to talk to him and fix things.Like today, I woke up with an overwhelming need to see him. My heart was heavy, and I couldn’t stand the silence anymore when all I wanted was to be with him.“What are you going to do at the cabin, Emily? It’s Sunday, and it’s pouring outside,” my dad complained for the hundredth time since I told him I was leaving.“I just have one thing to do there. It won’t take long.”The truth was, I had nothing to do there, just like I had nothing to do at home. But I couldn

  • My Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 54

EmilyLate in the afternoon, as promised to the girls, I made my way to Bete’s house, accompanied by Helen, who refused to stay home alone with Fernando.“Finally, you’re here! You can’t do this to a pregnant woman—I’ve been dying of curiosity since yesterday,” Bete practically shouted, dramatic as ever. Then the girls spotted Helen and got even more excited, especially Bete.“Why didn’t you say you were bringing Helen?” Bianca asked, already hugging her. They had met when Helen and Fernando came to visit my parents. I was never around for those visits, so I had no idea how well they got along until now.“Another pregnant woman to understand me, finally,” Bete said, already rubbing Helen’s belly and hugging her next. “So let’s get to it, Emily. You don’t want two pregnant women passing out from your stalling on the gossip.”Once we were all settled in the living room, sipping drinks and eating, I felt like I’d lost my courage. It felt like a girls’ afternoon, not a moment to recount t

  • My Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 53

I woke up early. Helen was arriving, and I wanted her to have a hearty breakfast when she got here. I left Dad finishing preparations with Sara’s help and rushed to the bus station. We were all pointedly ignoring Fernando, pretending he wasn’t there, so he didn’t need to be told anything. My phone pinged with a message, and my heart leapt, thinking it might be Marcos. But seeing “Bi” crushed my hopes.Bi: Hey, Emy. Marcos went to work today, still hasn’t talked to me, still distant like I told you. But he left the house for the shop—that’s something, right?I sighed, relieved. Him leaving the house and seeing people was a good start. Talking to others would help him process until he was ready to talk to me.Bi: Don’t forget we’re meeting this afternoon. I can’t stand not knowing why you’re both suffering like this.I’d forgotten about our meeting today. I didn’t want to leave Helen alone with Fernando. Dad would be at rehab, and Sara would be working all day. Looks like it’d be four w

EmilyAfter calming down, I finally went up to my room, determined to call Bianca and ask her to keep an eye on Marcos for me. Thankfully, they lived in the same house, so she could keep me updated. I just hoped he wouldn’t push his sister away right now.“Bianca, are you home?” I asked hurriedly as soon as she picked up.“No, I’m on shift today. Why?”“I need you to check on Marcos for me. We had a fight at the cabin, and he ran off before I could talk to him.”“Okay, but why would Marcos run off? That’s not like him, especially not leaving things unresolved with you, now that you two were doing so well.”She had a point. Marcos didn’t shy away from arguments until both sides understood each other. That’s why his reaction today worried me even more—he was so shocked by the bomb Fernando dropped that he bolted before learning more about what really happened. But I was trying to think like my dad—he just needed time to process.“I’ll explain better tomorrow, but I’m really worried abou
