"Took you long enough," Andrea breathed out, his voice cracking with a sudden, wild mixture of relief and forced arrogance as he gripped the hot brass doorknob.

Vanessa didn't answer right away. She stood framed in the dim concrete corridor, immaculate in her tailored ivory linen suit, completely untouched by the stifling, 42°C heat radiating from the stairwell. In her right hand, she held the sleek, insulated thermal bag, her expression smooth, composed, and unreadable. Her quiet presence carried a sharp, undeniable authority that filled the narrow hallway, turning the grimy passage into her personal stage.

Inside, the silence cracked instantly.

Veronica pushed herself off the frayed sofa, her red, sweat-streaked eyes widening as she staggered toward the entryway to see who was at the door. For a fraction of a second, absolute shock washed over her face—Vanessa looked so striking, so commanding, so entirely out of reach that it felt like looking at a high-society stranger rather than the submissive daughter-in-law she had spent ten years belittling.

"Look at you," Veronica rasped, her eyes sweeping from the designer cut of Vanessa's collar down to her polished leather heels. "Look at the way you stand there, staring at us like we are trash beneath your feet!"

"Mother, shut up and let me handle this," Andrea snapped over his shoulder, sneering as his eyes fixed greedily on the thermal bag in Vanessa's grip. He turned back to Vanessa, his bloodshot eyes narrowing with condescending contempt. "Look at you, Vanessa. Playing dress-up while my family suffers? Do you have any idea how pathetic you look trying to play the big boss? You shut off the power, you locked the bank apps, and you think you’ve done something clever? You’re acting like a hysterical, unhinged child!"

Vanessa remained silent, her dark eyes drifting calmly across Andrea’s stained collar and flushed face.

"Answer my son!" Veronica shrieked, her crackling voice echoing off the concrete walls as she thrust a shaking, yellowed finger directly at Vanessa's crisp outfit. "You were dressing up! You were out there living like a queen and forgot your primary responsibility to this family! Look at you! You shameless trollop! Who did you sleep with that you could afford a luxury car and outfit like that while my son suffers?!"

"Shut up, Mother!" Andrea barked, though he didn't disagree. He leaned closer to the threshold, pointing a sweat-drenched finger directly in Vanessa’s face. "You hear her? She’s right! Who the hell do you think you are, Vanessa?! You were nothing before I married you, and you’re nothing without me now! You think because you put on an expensive suit you’re suddenly above us? You’re a pathetic, ungrateful woman who forgot who built you! You dragged those trashy bloggers to our doorstep just to throw a petty tantrum because you couldn't handle being a proper wife!"

Vanessa’s dark eyes didn't flinch. She stood perfectly still on the threshold, her gaze cold and level as Andrea’s bitter insults hung in the thick, foul air. She didn't offer a defense, nor did her posture break.

Behind Veronica, Susan pushed herself up from the grimy floor tiles, clutching six-year-old Leo against her hip. The boy’s skin was pale and damp, his hair matted with sweat as he whimpered softly in the suffocating heat. Susan marched straight over to the doorway, her eyes burning with a dark, bitter venom. She grabbed the boy by his small waist and shoved the trembling child right out into the hallway, forcing him directly against the crisp fabric of Vanessa’s trousers.

"Take your son!" Susan snapped, her voice trembling with frantic, bitter desperation as she thrust Leo forward. "Look at him, Vanessa! Look at his face! He hasn't had a decent bath, a proper meal, or a drop of clean water since you walked out! Look at what your selfish stunt is doing to your own child! Do you even have a heart left in that chest, or are you too busy playing rich woman on our money?!"

Leo whimpered, his small, dirt-streaked fingers clutching at the clean linen of Vanessa’s trouser leg. "Mummy... water..." he whispered faintly, his lips chapped and dry.

Vanessa lowered her gaze to the little boy clinging blindly to her leg. Leo looked up at her with wide, weeping eyes, his tiny hands reaching out toward the insulated thermal bag she held at her side, lured by the faint hint of heat radiating through the zipper.

For one heavy, suffocating second, a dark flicker of doubt crossed Vanessa’s mind.

Looking at this monstrous, ungrateful family—at Andrea trying to hide his embarrassment behind cruel, arrogant insults, at Veronica hurling vile accusations, at Susan weaponizing the innocent child born of her own sick secret—she felt a sudden, hollow weight in her chest. She wondered if driving down to this filthy hole was even worth her time and effort. She didn't need to stand here in this foul stairwell listening to a failure degrade her. She could turn around right now, step back into her executive SUV, drive up her sunlit hill to the Axerold Estate, and abandon them to rot in their self-made ruin completely.

*No,* Vanessa told herself, her inner resolve locking back into place like a cold steel vault. *You stick to the plan. Let his arrogance dig his own grave.*

She smoothed her posture, her lips curving into a soft, impossibly gentle, and submissive smile—a look so timid, so familiar, that Andrea’s chest puffed up with sudden, arrogant triumph.

"I am so sorry, Mother-in-law," Vanessa murmured, her voice dropping into the quiet, obedient tone she had used for ten long years. "I'm sorry, Andrea..."

"You better be sorry!" Andrea sneered, crossing his arms over his rumpled shirt as he scoffed at her timid tone. "You made a fool out of yourself today, Vanessa. You thought you could run away, but you realized real quick that you’re helpless on your own, didn't you? You came crawling right back."

"Is that food I smell?" Susan asked suddenly, her nose twitching as she stepped closer to the doorway, her bitter hostility temporarily derailed by the overwhelming gnawing in her stomach. "Tell me you brought something real. We haven't eaten since yesterday morning!"

"I brought food, though," Vanessa said softly, lifting the thermal bag slightly so the smooth metallic zipper caught the dim hallway light. "I knew everyone would be upset... I knew you'd be hungry."

Veronica let out a harsh, mocking scoff, though her mouth watered instantly at the mention of a meal. "Food?! Is food supposed to make us forget all the nonsense you did today?! You think you can just show up with a bag of food and fix this disrespect?!"

Andrea stepped forward, adjusting his stained collar as an ugly, condescending smirk spread across his face.

"Let her in, Mother," Andrea instructed, his voice dripping with spiteful arrogance. "Look at her—she’s terrified. She knows she messed up. She brought food like a good little servant to beg for my forgiveness before I kick her to the curb completely."

He reached out, grabbing Vanessa roughly by her shoulder to drag her across the threshold into the heat. "Step inside, Vanessa. Put that bag on the table, wipe that foolish smirk off your face, and start apologizing properly."

Veronica took a step back into the sweltering, trash-strewn living room, gesturing grandly toward the dirty kitchen counter with an air of absolute, unearned authority.

"You know what?" Veronica declared, her voice rising with manic triumph as she pointed toward the sink full of moldy dishes. " Serve us to show how sorry you are, after which you clear this mess."

The grand double oak doors of the Axerold Estate clicked shut behind Vanessa, instantly sealing out the hum of heavy machinery and the crisp mountain air. Inside, the temperature was a steady, refreshing 20°C. The wide marble foyer stretched out before her, bathed in soft, natural sunlight filtering through floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The scent of fresh eucalyptus and polished wood filled the high-ceilinged space. It was silent, pristine, and completely her own. Vanessa took a slow, deep breath, letting the cool air fill her lungs, washing away the lingering, stagnant memory of Apartment 301’s stairwell. Instead of heading straight up the grand staircase to her private wing, Vanessa turned toward the side corridor leading out to the west terrace. Through the glass, she could see three stonemasons in heavy leather aprons carefully aligning dark marble slabs along the edge of the pavilion pool. She pushed open the terrace door, her heels clicking softly against the flagstone. "

The autumn sun hung high over the rolling private crest of the Axerold Estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the terraced lawns. Up here, three hundred meters above the sprawling city basin, the air was crisp and clear, carrying the clean scent of crushed pine needles, fresh timber, and mountain air. It was a world completely removed from the suffocating, concrete heat trapped in the city streets below. Matt leaned against the raw pine framing of the main gatehouse, a heavy steel tape measure clipped to his leather work belt. Sweat glistened on his broad neck, but unlike the stagnant moisture of the lower districts, this was the honest sweat of physical labor. Around him, the rhythmic hum of high-end construction filled the afternoon—the deep thrum of a hydraulic lift positioning reinforced steel beams, the sharp bite of a circular saw cutting through thick oak planking, and the steady clatter of pneumatic nail guns. "Hey, boss!" one of the senior framers shouted over the noi

They practically tumbled back through the threshold of Apartment 301, slamming the heavy iron door shut behind them and sealing themselves right back into the suffocating, heat trap. Inside, the silence was absolute—heavy, foul, and thick with the rancid stench of decaying food in the sink and the suffocating heat baking off the plaster walls. Overhead, the dead ceiling fan hung uselessly like a dark spider, completely still. Susan dropped directly to her knees on the sticky floor tiles, pulling six-year-old Leo into her chest as she broke down into harsh, ragged sobs. The boy’s skin was burning hot, his small shirt soaked through with sweat as he whimpered continuously against her shoulder. "We are trapped!" Susan cried out, her voice raw and breaking. "We can't even step outside to buy water without those vultures putting cameras in our faces! Look at us! Look at what we've become!" Veronica staggered toward the frayed couch, collapsing onto the damp cushions with a heavy, whee

The heavy glass doors of the Axerold Estate main house slid shut with a soft hiss, instantly cutting off the suffocating 40°C heat and the noise of the power tools outside. The cool air conditioning hit Vanessa immediately, fresh and smelling of clean floor polish and wood. Matt walked right behind her, carrying the big market tote into the kitchen and dropping it onto the marble counter with a heavy breath. "Thanks again, Matt," Vanessa said, turning around and taking a small towel to wipe the sweat from her neck. "I know carrying market bags isn't part of your job." Matt laughed, wiping his brow with his sleeve. "Call it site prep, Miss Axerold. Carrying that much meat and peppers in this sun is no joke." Vanessa let out a laugh, shaking her head as she pulled a fresh navy apron out of her bag. "Site prep? You're turning my market run into construction work now?" "Hey, it counts," Matt said with a grin. "Every project needs good site prep. If my crew collapses from hunge

The echo of the slammed front door lingered in the sweltering silence of Apartment 301, leaving the room heavy with the sour stench of decaying food and unwashed linoleum. Andrea stood motionless near the broken hallway mirror, his face drained of every drop of color. His open dress shirt hung loosely off his shoulders, damp with cold sweat. For the first time, the blind arrogance in his eyes faltered, replaced by a hollow, vacant stare as he looked at the silk-wrapped bakery box Clara had left resting on the grimy cabinet. Veronica was the first to snap the silence. "That ungrateful witch!" Veronica shrieked, her voice cracking into a ragged, high-pitched scream. She slammed both fists onto the sticky dining table, sending a cloud of stale dust into the stagnant air. "How dare she! How dare she drag David and Clara into our private business! She paid them to say those things! She hired actors to come to our home and insult my son!" Susan slowly pushed herself off the sofa,
