Chapter 4

Author: Goodtale
Brenda's mouth hung open, and her eyes turned red.

I continued explaining, "I was only hospitalized for fixing my ailments over the years. It's just hemorrhoids, cavities, chronic gastritis, and cervical spondylosis. I'd accumulated them all over the decade I spent working at that huge programming company.

"My Aunt Jessica saw me trailing along the corridor and thought that I had terminal cancer. I didn't explain myself to her."

"Aiden, you…"

She leaned over the bed and burst into tears.

"I thought you were going to die!"

She cried for a while, then looked up and dried her tears from her face.

"It's good that you're still doing good. Then, I'll be leaving now. Please stay healthy and well."

She got to her feet and grabbed her bag. However, I took her hand and said, "Don't go. I… My waist still hurts, and my legs are still shaky. And I still need to keep changing out my hemorrhoid dressing…"

She turned to look at me. "What are you trying to say?"

"Stay… Even if it's just for the sake of keeping the act going until the end."

Brenda held on to her bag strap and stood there, staring at me. Then, she sat down, picked up the thermal flask, and put it in my hands.

"Finish the stew first."

I held it up. The stew was still warm and hot, and it warmed me up very nicely on the inside.

I showed Brenda the photos and my annotations on them in my photo gallery. She cried again and held my hand tightly.

Early the next morning, Mom came to visit me again. This time, she spoke to me in an even softer tone than before.

"Aiden, you're not going to hold out much longer… You'd better hurry up and settle what needs to be settled while you're still awake now."

"What are you talking about?"

She then produced a thick stack of documents from her bag. They included my identification documents, my property deed title, and several signed transfer agreements.

"Transfer your house in the city and your car to Austin first. I'll handle all the paperwork."

I looked at the stack of documents.

The property title was something that I'd only managed to get after saving up for over a decade working at the huge programming company. And the car had been paid for in full. I'd just bought it last year.

"Mom, I told you that I'm fine," I said.

She didn't respond to that. Instead, she pointed at the signature line on one of the documents and said, "Sign here. You don't need to bother about anything else."

"I paid for it with my hard-earned money."

"You're not going to use it anyway."

The room went silent, and the tension grew. The birds outside my window chirped twice before falling silent.

I snapped a photo of the documents. This was the eighth photo that I was adding a footnote to.

"Mom brought a stack of documents and my identification papers and told me to transfer my house and car to Austin. She told me to hurry up with the signing and she'll take care of the rest of the paperwork."

I'd only just finished saving the note when I heard someone else at the door. It was Samson Moreno, my best friend since childhood.

When Mom saw that he was here, she left the papers behind and walked out of the room.

Samson hadn't come empty-handed. He brought two bottles of beer with him and set them down on the bedside table.

"Here, Aiden. I got you a drink."

"I can't drink now."

Samson still opened his bottle and finished half of it before speaking again.

"I'm getting married next month."

"Congratulations," I said. "Who's the lucky bride?"

"Someone from work. You wouldn't know her," he said, pacing around the room with his beer before speaking again. "Remember our bet back then?

"We said that whoever got married first would receive a wedding cash gift of 10,000 dollars from the other. You remember it, don't you?"

Of course I did. We'd made that bet right after high school, which was nearly 15 years ago.

"It's not that I'm trying to rush you or anything," Samson said, looking at me. "It's just that… with your condition like this… I don't think you'd be able to hold out until my wedding day."

He said he was afraid that I wouldn't be able to hold out until his wedding day. But it wasn't that he was worried I wouldn't be able to attend. He was just worried that I'd die before I gave him the 10,000 dollars.

"Sure."

"Really?" he exclaimed in joy. "Then, don't forget to transfer it to me soon."

He was still a little taken aback. He didn't think that I would agree to it that easily. Then, he finished the beer before leaving.

I snapped a photo of his empty beer bottles and wrote the ninth footnote in my photo gallery.

"Best buddy Samson Morena brought two bottles of beer to visit me and finished them all. He came to make sure that I'd fulfill our high-school bet of giving him 10,000 dollars for his wedding. The reason is that he's afraid I won't survive until his wedding."

Before I'd thrown the beer bottles away, Aunt Jessica came to visit me again. She still spoke to me as though she were concerned about me.

"Aiden, I've been so worried about you these two days that I could barely sleep a wink. But Eugene has a friend who owns a company in the medical field, and he knows a lot of experts there," she said, referring to her son, Eugene Woods.

"I've arranged for one of the experts to come over to talk to you tomorrow."

I stared at her for a few long minutes. Was she going to find someone to treat me on my behalf?

Puzzled, I nodded in response.

One evening, Brenda finished clearing the table after dinner and came over with a platter of cut fruit."Aiden, actually, how many surgeries did you have back when you were hospitalized?""Four," I replied. "Hemorrhoids, cavities, stomach, and cervical traction.""That's all?""That's all."She stuffed a piece of apple into her mouth and mumbled, "Your Aunt Jessica spread rumors about your stage-four terminal cancer all over her social media circle."I shrugged. "She never asked me anything.""Why didn't you explain yourself, then?"I leaned back in my seat and thought about it for a while."At first, I didn't have the strength to talk. It was only the third day after my hemorrhoid surgery, and speaking tugged at my wound so painfully that I just didn't want to talk."Then, I got busy. And after that… I thought of seeing how far it would go.""How far would what go?""I wanted to see how many people wanted me dead."Brenda didn't answer and nudged the fruits toward me. I t

I became famous in the medical industry.During a media interview, a reporter asked me, "Mr. Carroll, don't you think that the change from the gaming industry to the medical industry is a little too drastic?"I replied, "Is it? But they both address pain points. Gaming addresses psychological issues. Medicine addresses physical ones."The reporter then asked, "So, which do you think is more difficult?"I said, "Medicine is more difficult. If a game crashes, I can still fix it and roll it back to the previous version. But if a patient 'crashes,' then there's no rolling back."My interview line went viral. There were at least 30,000 comments under my interview video, and the one with the highest number of likes said, "This guy's finally got it right."Justin screenshotted the viral post and sent it to the company group chat, followed by a thumbs-up sticker.Brenda didn't repost it. But she printed out the screenshot and stuck it to our refrigerator at home, next to some dried rose

Investing in healthcare was a hundred times harder than making a game.I invested 30 million dollars in the first project, but the clinical data didn't meet the standards. The lab director called to apologize, saying, "We're sorry, Mr. Carroll. We failed."I replied, "If we fail, then we'll start over. We'll add more money if it's not enough."I then invested 50 million dollars in the next project and got a team to research early gastric cancer screening.Six months later, they finally produced results with a 91% accuracy.I printed out the report and placed it on the coffee table in the living room.Brenda saw it, picked it up, and looked at it twice."Can this save lives?""Yes."She stacked the report back together and put it in her briefcase."This is so much more meaningful than creating video games, Aiden," she told me."Games are meaningful too.""Yes, your games make people cry, but your medicine helps people live."I couldn't find a comeback to that.I invested 1

The company went public in the fifth year. The day of the Bell Ringing Ceremony, I wore a new suit and tie that Brenda personally knotted for me. She stood in the first row, holding a bouquet of roses that she had grown herself.I stood on the stage and saw her smiling at me. It was the exact same one that she had shown me by the flowerbed that year. The moment I struck the bell, what flashed through my mind was not the stock price of my company, but rather, the image of her pushing open my hospital room door that night with a thermal flask in her hand. From then on, I was no longer just a programmer at another large company. I was not the founder of Carroll Entertainment Group. The day the stock quadrupled in price, Justin ran into my office in such excitement that he could barely speak."Aiden! Aiden, oh, my God, Aiden! The stock value just surpassed ten billion dollars!""Yeah, I know.""That's it? That's your only reaction?""What should I do then? Break into a dance for y

"That spicy crawfish boil," I told Brenda. "I never should have argued with you over that back then."She didn't say a word and just leaned over to take my hand, resting hers on the back of mine.…I bought a villa and moved in with Brenda. I remembered that she loved gardening when we were in college.Justin would come over and join us for meals every now and then. His phone gallery was still filled with hundreds of couple photos and screenshots of me and Brenda in our college days.I quit the family group chat with my relatives. I later heard that they wrote me an apology letter and prepared a gift for me, but I didn't accept it. After all, who knew if they would later try to blackmail me into doing other things for them just because I accepted something of theirs right now?One evening, Brenda came home after work with a to-go pack of spicy crawfish boil in her hands."A new shop just opened outside the community. Try it."I set out the food, and she sat down opposite me, ha

Two days later, the atmosphere in Carroll Manor was loud, bustling, and exciting. By evening, the huge dining table was piled high with drinks and dishes of all sorts.Aunt Jessica had brought barbecued ribs, Lana had brought her fried chicken, Aunt Ruth's mac and cheese balls were glistening, and Uncle James had brought two cartons each of wine and beer.Everyone was grinning from ear to ear as they talked about "luck", "blessing", and how "relieved" they felt. However, I saw everything. When I entered through the front door, I saw a few of them hurriedly stuffing their masks inside their pockets. Some of them subconsciously shifted their arms when they walked past me. And there was a huge bottle of hand sanitizer in the center of the yard, and whoever walked past it would keep using it to sanitize their hands."Aiden's here!"Everyone got to their feet at once.Aunt Jessica was the first one to approach me. She smiled so widely at me that all the wrinkles on her face could b
