Chapter 3

Author: Fairy
Once Mia had the ring, my parents took her downstairs, but Julian stayed behind.

He took my hand and spoke softly. "Elena, I know this hurts. But your family will always owe Mia. Her father died saving your parents. Just give in to her a little more.

"Your birthday is the day after tomorrow. I booked that Michelin-starred restaurant you love. We'll celebrate properly, and you can put this behind you, okay?"

Maybe part of me still couldn't let go. Or maybe I wanted one last good memory with him.

I swallowed the bitterness and nodded, my voice hoarse. "Okay."

On my birthday, I put on the red dress Julian had given me and went to the restaurant. Our reservation time came and went, and there was still no sign of him.

A storm broke outside. I sat by the window for four hours, feeling like a fool.

My steak went cold. The candles burned down. He didn't answer a single call or message.

I waited until the restaurant closed. He never came.

When I got home, Julian's car was parked out front. The door was ajar. Through the gap, I saw him sitting on the couch.

Mia sat astride his lap in a skimpy silk nightgown, her face buried in his chest as she cried.

"Julian, I feel awful. My chest still feels so tight. Don't leave tonight, okay?"

Julian soothed her gently. "Okay. Don't be scared. I'm not going anywhere."

I stood outside in the shadows, my heart aching so badly I could hardly breathe.

I shoved the door open and fixed them with a cold stare.

When Julian saw me, he pushed Mia off him in a panic. "Elena, let me explain..."

I smiled bitterly. "Explain why you're holding my sister on your lap while she's wearing a silk nightgown? On my birthday?

"No need to explain, Julian. I saw everything."

I turned to leave, but Julian grabbed me. "Elena, it's not what you think. Mia had an asthma attack. I couldn't leave her.

"I swear I didn't stand you up on purpose!"

"Elena, don't blame Julian!" Mia suddenly stepped in front of him, crying. "I didn't know today was your birthday! It's all my fault. I shouldn't have gotten sick. Please don't be mad at him!"

The argument brought my parents downstairs. "Elena, Julian had a good reason," my father said sternly. "He didn't do it on purpose. Stop throwing a tantrum."

My mother took my hand. "That's enough. We're all family. Don't make a fuss. Go upstairs, take a hot shower, and change before you catch a cold."

The gentle way they covered for him cut me to pieces.

I shook off my mother's hand and went upstairs without a word.

In my room, I peeled off the soaked red dress and threw it in the trash.

Half an hour later, my mother pushed the door open.

To my surprise, she was carrying a custard tart she'd made herself, topped with my favorite strawberries.

For a moment, I froze.

Until I was 15, my mother made me a custard tart for every birthday.

But after Mia arrived, eggs were banned from our table because she was allergic. I hadn't tasted one of my mother's custard tarts in years.

"I know you've had a rough day." My mother put the custard tart in my hands and said gently, "Tonight's your birthday. You should be happy. Go on, try it."

The tart was warm, and the steam rising from it brought tears to my eyes.

All the hurt of being ignored and stripped of everything seemed to drift away with the steam.

Maybe, deep down, they still love me?

I was about to speak when my mother said, "Elena, Mia has severe asthma, and the city air is bad for her. We want to transfer the house your grandmother left you to her."

The color drained from my face. A chill swept through me.

My mother went on, as if she hadn't noticed. "Once you marry Julian, you'll live at the Carter estate. You won't need that old house.

"Mia has no one else. She needs a place like that. Think of it as a loan. When we have more money, we'll buy you an even bigger place, okay?"

"Elena!" Julian threw himself toward me, clutching the worn hair clip. The guards pinned him down, scraping his knees raw. He still crawled toward me. "Elena, I'm begging you. Just look at me...""My name is Sophia. Get it right," I said coldly.Julian shook and raised the hair clip over his head. "No, Elena, I was wrong! I know I destroyed our seven years together. I was blind, and I lost you!"Please give me a chance to make it right. I'll give you everything I own! Don't give up on me completely... Please!"He slammed his forehead against the ground again and again. Each thud was enough to make anyone flinch.I was about to fire back when someone stepped in front of me.Nina, my closest friend at the base, strode down the steps, jabbed a finger in Julian's face, and tore into him."You dare bring up those seven years? Where were you on her birthday? With another woman! You left Sophia waiting at that restaurant for four hours!"She shook with rage. "You put another woman's name on h

Security outside the National Hall was tight. Armed officers had set up a cordon and let no one through. My parents and Julian stood outside in the pouring rain, soaked to the skin, sobbing and crying out my name."Elena, it's Mom. Please, just come out and let us see you!"The guards blocked them, expressionless. "We told you, there's no one named Elena here. Are you deaf? Get out of here, or we'll open fire!"During the scuffle, the doors opened. I came out, flanked by more than a dozen officers and guards."Elena!" My mother recognized me at once and burst into loud sobs. "Sweetheart! Look at me! I'm here to take you home!"My father pushed forward. "Elena, I was wrong! Forgive me and come home with us!"The guard beside me moved to stop them, but I shook my head and looked down at them, my voice flat. "Home to what? The dark, damp storage room where I lived for ten years? Or that table full of seafood and nuts, where you tried to make me eat food you knew I was allergic to?"The th

"Shut up! You bitch!" Julian's eyes were bloodshot as he lunged and grabbed Mia by the throat. The brutal truth in her words left Julian and my parents in agony. She was right. Mia had only asked. The real wounds had come from them, every single time they indulged her and took her side!My mother slapped herself hard, again and again, wailing, "She's right. What kind of mother am I?! I'm worse than an animal! I was the one who drove Elena away!"My father sank to the floor, tearing at his white hair with shaking hands. "Elena... I deserve to die! If you come back, I'll give you my life!"Julian grabbed his car keys and bolted for the door. "Keep looking! I'll turn the world upside down if I have to. However long it takes, I'm bringing Elena back!"They threw Mia out for good and took back the car and house they'd given her. After ten years of being treated like a princess, Mia had no skills to support herself. Time flew by. Because my research was classified, the government kept me under tight protection.Julian and my parents called in every favor and searched the world for me, but they found nothing.Meanwhile, Mia realized they were paying less and less attention to her.My parents and Julian no longer spoiled her. They'd even begun to resent her because I was gone.No matter how she sulked or cried, all she got were cold, dismissive looks.Their every thought was consumed by the search for me. Then one night, they came home late and heard Mia's furious voice through her half-open door upstairs."Now that Elena's gone, those two old fossils barely pay attention to me. If they find out I'm not even the daughter of the man who saved them, I'm finished!"Get rid of them so I can take their money. If you don't, you won't see a cent!"The three of them froze outside her room. My father kicked the door open, startling Mia.Her face went white. "Wh-when did you get back...""Mia, what did you me

I had no idea my parents and Julian were frantically searching for me. My whole world was the data in front of me."The magnetic confinement model for the third fusion track is down to a 0.003% error rate!"Professor Hawke's voice rose with excitement as he watched the figures change on the screen. "Elena, you solved in five months what we couldn't crack in two years. You're a genius!"Dozens of leading scientists in the hall applauded. They looked at me with open admiration. Here, people recognized my work, and my research was protected by patents. No one put Mia's name on it the way Julian had.Once, Professor Hawke and I worked on a project together. I assumed my name wouldn't even be on it, but he listed me as the sole author."Elena, you did the work," he told me. "I only gave you a couple of pointers. You deserve the credit."In that moment, I felt a pang. I remembered finding Mia's name on my work, and how Julian had pulled me aside when I confronted him."Mia wants to use this

On the wedding day, Mia went through the entire ceremony in the wedding dress, then put on an innocent act. "Julian, the ceremony's over. I want to give the wedding back to Elena. Why isn't she here yet?"Julian praised her for being thoughtful. Then he called me. I didn't answer. He sent a few texts. No reply. Irritated, he said, "Elena's acting out again. Does she think we won't get mad? If she doesn't show up soon, I'll marry someone else!"My mother frowned. "I barely mentioned the house, and she snapped at me and told me to get out. It's not like she even uses it. What's wrong with giving it to Mia? She's being unreasonable."Mia's eyes reddened. "Don't talk about Elena like that. It's her wedding. Of course she's upset. I've already gotten more than enough. I'll move out tomorrow and give you all back to her.""You don't have to," my father said, his face grim. "Mia, Elena used to be such a sweet, understanding girl. Don't worry. She'll show up."Julian nodded. "Let's check the d
