Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Everyone took their seats in the dining room.

The large rosewood table held only a few plates of plain pasta and several simple side dishes.

At the sight of the meager spread, Daniel slammed his cutlery onto the table. "What's the meaning of this? Are you deliberately trying to keep us from eating?"

Lenny tried to smooth things over. "Plain pasta and simple dishes are perfectly fine. Jenna worked hard to prepare them."

But inwardly, she murmured, 'Jenna was raised in the capital. What delicacies hasn't she tried? Yet she only prepared these dishes. Could she really hate me so much that she'd go this far?

'I should find a chance to tell Mom and Dad not to adopt me after all. If I'm the reason Mom, Dad, and Jenna grow apart, I'd never forgive myself!'

Robert finally spoke, his voice sharp with command. "Get on your knees!"

I remained where I was, unmoved.

In my previous life, Lenny's thoughts had turned the feast I had painstakingly prepared into proof, in their eyes, that I was spoiled and extravagant.

Back then, Lenny had clutched her chest sympathetically and said that the soldiers had endured so much hardship that a simple plate of pasta and a few side dishes would have been more than enough to make them happy.

But now, I had prepared exactly the simple meal they supposedly wanted.

So why were they angry?

When I refused to move, Daniel stepped forward, seized both my wrists, and forced me down with all his strength.

He had practiced martial arts since childhood and spent years in the military. Naturally, a sheltered young woman like me stood no chance against his strength.

He gave me a hard shove. Bruises immediately formed around my wrists as he forced me to my knees.

Robert pointed at me and repeatedly called me a disgrace.

Daniel was even more furious. "You eat lavish meals every day in the capital, and this is what you prepare when your parents come home? How can you call yourself a daughter?"

"How do you know I eat lavish meals every day?" I asked, still reeling from the accusation.

My already frail body couldn't endure Daniel's rough treatment. Without warning, I coughed up a mouthful of blood.

The sight stunned him, and he immediately released me.

I calmly wiped the blood from my lips and said coldly, "When Grandma was alive, she never allowed me to eat meat. I was only given half a plate of plain pasta at each meal.

"For my parents' sake, I specifically told the kitchen to serve a full plate today. How does that make me a disgrace as a daughter?"

My grandmother had always hated Linda. After Linda left me behind at the age of three and took Daniel with her to the frontier, my grandmother's treatment of me grew even harsher. She bullied me constantly and often beat me.

Half a plate of plain pasta was already considered a normal meal. Whenever my grandmother was in a bad mood, she would make me kneel on an empty stomach as punishment.

It sounded absurd when spoken aloud. The daughter of a decorated general couldn't even get enough to eat. Yet it was the truth.

My parents' expressions darkened. They presumably knew exactly what my grandmother had been like.

Linda seemed to remember how cruelly my grandmother had treated her in the past. For once, she genuinely felt sorry for me.

Tears streamed down her face as she helped me to my feet. "My poor girl. You've suffered so much. Your brother didn't mean to hurt you. We're all family, so don't take it to heart."

I said nothing. I simply stared at the bruises covering my wrists.

Robert shoved Daniel toward me.

Daniel stumbled forward, lowered his head, and apologized quietly. "I was wrong. I shouldn't have pushed you."

Lenny also hurried over and gently wiped the bloodstains from my clothes with a handkerchief. "Seeing you like this breaks my heart, Jenna!"

Yet inside, she was saying, 'Sure, Jenna suffered, but it wasn't like Daniel caused any of that. Why is she being so unreasonable?'

The moment those words rang out, everyone's expressions changed once more.

Daniel's guilt vanished without a trace.

The pity in my parents' eyes disappeared as well, replaced by resentment at my supposed "difficult" behavior.

I couldn't be bothered to deal with them any longer, so I walked straight out.

As I left, Robert called after me, "You're going to the palace tomorrow. The Queen will be choosing a companion for the princess. Remember to help your sister."

Princess Sophia had no interest in Lenny's swordsmanship. Her own martial skills far surpassed Lenny's, but her status as a princess prevented her from acting as freely as she wished.Once I realized something was off about Lenny, Princess Sophia and I discussed how to lure her out.Every night, I deliberately lingered outside Lenny's room and made just enough noise to make her suspect I was up to something. All that effort finally paid off. Unable to resist any longer, Lenny captured me.That was when Princess Sophia and I made our move. The place turned out to be nothing more than a shabby storage room. Who would have guessed it was being used to hide spies from Avelon?Several Avelonian remnants lay scattered across the courtyard. Their arms and legs had been broken, but they had been kept alive for the interrogation that would follow.Princess Sophia looked at me with sympathy in her eyes. "I had no idea your family could be so foolish."I mimicked her usual shrug and gave

On a dark and windy night, I crouched outside Lenny's room as usual. She had already put out the lamp, and the room was completely silent.I was about to leave when Lenny's thoughts suddenly echoed in my mind.'I've already poisoned the water and stolen the border defense map. Everything is in place. Once it's done, I'll take the Richardsons' heads to my parents!'I froze as a terrible sense of dread washed over me.So that was why she had so conveniently become my parents' adopted daughter. Why she had insisted on entering the palace as Princess Sophia's companion. If she was a spy, everything finally made sense.I hurried away, determined to tell Princess Sophia everything I had overheard.I gathered up my skirt and raced along the palace walkway in the dead of night. Our quarters stood in a remote corner of the palace, far from Princess Sophia's residence.I was desperate to reach her, and my urgency only made me more anxious.Suddenly, a dark figure appeared before me. Knowing Lenny was up to no good, I had no intention of warning the Richardsons.I hadn't done a thing, yet they already believed I couldn't stand her. If I warned them, they wouldn't be grateful. They would only accuse me of being malicious and trying to drive a wedge between them.Besides, in my previous life, I had starved to death in the church.Linda had stood there with Lenny in her arms, watching everything unfold while warning her never to become as shameless as me.Robert had whipped me with a riding crop, declaring that I was impure and had brought shame upon the family.Daniel had bound my hands and feet as though I were livestock, the thick hemp rope cutting deep into my flesh. The pain of those days remained vivid in my mind. Even thinking about it made me tremble with despair. But even when I kept to myself, someone always came looking for trouble.…For Linda's birthday, the entire household went all out.Lanterns and decorations hung everywhere, and the whole e

That evening, Robert came to pick Lenny up himself. The moment she saw him, she threw herself into his arms, trembling all over as she struggled to catch her breath. "Dad, Dad, I was so scared."Robert's heart ached for her. He rubbed her shoulder in comfort."What happened? Did someone hurt you?" His expression turned cold as he looked at me. "Did that ungrateful girl hurt you?"He phrased it as a question, but he had already decided what answer he wanted. That was my father.Lenny sniffled but quickly came to my defense. "It has nothing to do with Jenna. I was just too scared."Her thoughts, however, told a different story. 'Rosalie only picked on Jenna, and Jenna did this to her. I'm so scared. What if Jenna does the same thing to me?'News of what had happened to Rosalie had already spread everywhere, yet Robert had no idea his own daughter was behind it. To him, anyone capable of such vicious methods was nothing but a disgrace.Robert ordered a guard to escort Lenny, then

Rosalie knocked me off balance, and I went down with the momentum. Our tutor, Helen Prescott, was old-fashioned and couldn't stand seeing us fool around. She snapped, "Rosalie, what do you think you're doing?"Rosalie opened the book and handed it to Helen without even looking at it herself. Certain she had me cornered, she exclaimed triumphantly, "Ma'am, look! Jenna is actually reading this kind of book!"Everyone turned to look, only to stare back at Rosalie in confusion.Helen was furious. She snatched the book away and smacked Rosalie across the face with it. "What are you looking at? Is there something wrong with the words of the sages? You, on the other hand, are making quite a scene. Do you think you can behave this way in front of me?"Rosalie looked up in shock, then picked up the book. It contained nothing but proper classical writings. Not a trace remained of what she had slipped inside earlier. She stumbled back several steps and frantically flipped through the pages

  • My Family Could Hear Her Secrets   Chapter 4

When we got home, the same scene from my previous life played out all over again.Linda held Lenny in her arms and comforted her, while Robert ordered me to go to church and "reflect on my mistakes."I looked at him disdainfully. "The princess has summoned me to the palace tomorrow to be her companion. Are you sure you want me reflecting at church instead?"I had specifically asked the princess for this favor so I could protect myself from exactly this sort of situation.Robert's face flushed with rage. He pointed at me and sputtered, "You..."I turned away, leaving him with nothing but the sight of my retreating back.…The next day, no one came to take me to the palace. The coachman looked troubled as he quietly explained, "Miss Jenna, it's not that I'm trying to make things difficult for you. The general ordered me not to take you to the palace. There's nothing I can do!"I didn't make things difficult for him. After leaving the house, I simply turned left and hired a carri
