Chapter 2

Author: Seeky
My shoulder hurt so badly I was sweating, and I was in no mood for him. I laughed.

"So what? The party started without me, didn't it?

"And as for dignity, don't you know my family only ordered a gown for Sophia? What the hell was I supposed to wear to look respectable for you?"

I had to submit a written request to the family accountant to spend five dollars on a sandwich.

A gown was never happening.

Surprise flickered in Julian's eyes. Then he raised his voice. "Sophia was looking for you the whole time we were setting up. Now you've shown up like this just to scare her. Apologize to her right now!"

"Looking for me?"

I laughed out loud and turned toward Sophia, still surrounded by guests.

"Then how come I didn't get one message?"

Instead, I'd made dozens of calls for help, and they'd rejected every one.

Sophia seemed to notice us. She lifted her skirt and came hurrying over.

"Renee, where did you go? I was so worried about you!"

Her eyes were red and her voice broke as she grabbed my hand.

As if she were the one who'd just been hit by a car.

"Get off me!" I shoved her hand away.

My father and my brother came over with their faces set.

"Sophia was looking for you, and you weren't here. Now everyone's enjoying themselves, and you want to make a scene?"

I gave a bitter smile.

My bandages were soaked with blood. The card statement showed a hospital charge. Yet not one of them asked what had happened. They just kept telling me I'd frightened Sophia.

Julian stepped closer. "Renee," he ordered flatly. "Back down. Apologize to Sophia!"

"Apologize?" I looked at Sophia. "Why would I apologize?"

"Renee Bennett!"

My brother started to speak, but I cut him off. "I was nearly killed in a car accident. My cards were frozen, and I was thrown out of the hospital. I walked more than ten miles alone without a sip of water, and not one of you asked how I was. And you want me to apologize to Sophia?"

I pointed at Sophia. "If she hadn't tricked the driver with a fake message and sent the car somewhere else, I wouldn't have been walking along that road at night. I wouldn't have been hit—"

"Shut your mouth!"

Julian shoved me hard in the shoulder.

Crash!

The sound echoed through the hall.

I fell into the fountain in the middle of the hall. The gauze on my shoulder came apart, and blood spread through the water.

The room went dead silent.

Every pair of eyes was on me.

"Have you forgotten that you almost killed Sophia?"

Julian's eyes were red with rage. "Sophia doesn't hold it against you, and you have the nerve to point a finger at her?" he roared. "Renee, you're beyond saving!"

I did have travel plans. I just hadn't expected Jasper to be coming along. The calls from that house didn't stop for two months.I blocked every call.On the day of my flight, a few familiar figures turned up at the airport. My mother hurried toward me, her eyes red."Renee, I've sent Sophia away..."Forgive your father and me. Come home."I looked at them coldly."Move."My father and brother broke down, almost dropping to their knees."Renee! Come back, and every resource, every connection, every overseas asset the Bennett family has will be yours alone to command!""Too late."I had stopped needing any of it a long time ago.Their love or their money. If they'd done this sooner, I might have turned back. But some chances, once missed, are gone for good.I would never be a Bennett again as long as I lived.I turned around and got on the plane with Jasper. On board, Jasper leaned in the way he always did and handed me a glass of champagne. Then he clinked his glass against mine.I too

Ivy League early-decision results and the official SAT scores happened to come out on the same day.Jasper and I stared at the score page, holding our breath. On the other end of the video call, Mr. and Mrs. Voss did the same.1,590!I drew in a breath. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. That was a full 1,000-point jump from his previous garbage score!"Oh my God!" Mrs. Voss put a hand over her mouth on the screen. At the $10,000 per point we'd agreed on in the contract, I was about to get ten million dollars on top of the advances!I turned to look at Jasper, stunned."If you're this good, why were you turning in blank answer sheets before?"He smiled and told me straight, "I decided a long time ago that those bullshit old-money rules and that whole world were boring."He looked at me."Until I met you. A lunatic willing to take on everyone in the room."He put a hand on my head."This is my gift to you."Use it to put all of that behind you for good. Renee, welcome to my world

After I left the estate, I changed my number and blocked all contact from the Bennett family.Over the next few weeks, my parents and brother kept driving out to wait outside the Ivy League prep building with bags of food.Every time, I walked straight past them like they weren't there.A few days before the early-decision results came out, Julian cornered me in the library. He looked nothing like the self-assured heir I remembered. His eyes were sunken, and he held a beautiful box.His hands shook as he opened it, revealing an expensive designer necklace."Renee, please. Give me one more chance."His voice was pleading. "I'm done with Sophia. You don't know what happened. She's in the ICU at a hospital in Manhattan right now, and no one knows if she'll make it."I went still and stopped turning the page.Julian rushed to explain."After you left, we kept trying to find you."I could always tell she was faking, honestly. I just believed you'd taken the money that was supposed to save h

"Impossible..."My father stared at the money in front of him and muttered, "We raised you for 18 years. It can't be this little..."I laid every request I'd ever filed for expenses over five dollars in front of him. His eyes reddened. My mother's hands shook as she picked up one of the denied requests from the floor. It was a medical bill she'd refused to pay ten years earlier. Her own signature was on the denial. She stared at the cold word "denied," and her knees gave out. She collapsed onto the couch, covered her face, and sobbed. My brother clutched another dusty slip.It was a rejected request for a five-dollar asthma inhaler. He was probably remembering that winter: I'd coughed so hard it felt like my lungs would tear open. All I could do was kneel in the snow and gasp for air.Maybe that was when it finally hit them. In 18 years, they'd spent less on me, their own daughter, than on a single birthday party for Sophia. The hypocrisy in the room made me sick. I put my backpack on

Over the next few weeks, Jasper actually started grinding through practice problems.Mr. and Mrs. Voss, who'd thought getting him to sit still was a miracle, wired me a hundred thousand dollars and asked me to keep tutoring him.I wasn't the stray who couldn't afford a meal anymore. That weekend I planned to go back to the Long Island estate for the documents I needed for my early-decision application. The moment I walked in, I could feel that something was off.My parents, Ethan, Sophia, and even Julian were all there. The old butler stood at the bend in the stairs, his eyes pleading with me to run.But my father had already seen me. He slammed his cane against the floor. "Close the door," he ordered flatly. The door had barely shut before my brother came at me and slapped me across the face."You shameless little bitch!"Ethan stood over me, shouting so close that his spit almost hit my face. "You sold yourself as a plaything to some new-money nobody from Silicon Valley for pocket ch

Sophia froze. Then her expression changed in an instant. Her eyes went red. "Jasper... Renee really is..."Jasper didn't even glance at her. He turned and draped his jacket over me.Then he bent down and picked up the trampled papers, brushing the dirt off each sheet. He looked at my swollen cheek and lowered his voice. "Can you walk?"I bit my lip and nodded. That was when the tears came.He frowned and dragged a hand through his hair."Fuck," he muttered. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders and practically carried me."We're going to my place to get that looked at. Staying in this dump another second is making me sick.""Wait!" Julian called after him.But he was looking at me.For the first time, I saw real hesitation and doubt in his eyes."Renee... tell me. That money you have. Did you really... earn it yourself?"I wiped my face."What makes you think you deserve an answer?""Renee..."He took two steps forward, but Sophia held him back."Julian..."Jasper gave Julian an impati
