Chapter 3

Author: Lazy Little Rascal
Two years later, in September, the new school year began.

Caleb was starting first grade, while I was entering fifth grade. I confidently led my parents to Caleb’s classroom.

“Mom, Dad, that’s Ms. Rachel Morgan. She used to teach me language arts. Now she’s Caleb’s homeroom teacher.”

I was just about to go over and greet Ms. Morgan when a familiar voice suddenly rang out.

“Lily! Is that you, Lily?”

The next second, a woman grabbed me by the arm.

It was my mother.

Behind her stood Sophie.

Right. Sophie would be starting first grade too.

Evelyn stared at me in shock and disbelief, then her expression suddenly filled with overwhelming joy.

After confirming that my face matched the one she remembered, a heartbroken sob escaped her throat.

“Lily... My daughter! I thought you were dead! Why did you take so long to come back? Why?!”

She clung tightly to me, crying hysterically.

“Lily, Mommy missed you so much! Why won’t you call me Mommy?”

I stared at her in confusion.

“Ma’am, I think you have the wrong person.”

Under her stunned gaze, I broke free from her grip and ran back to my adoptive parents, hiding behind them as though I had been frightened.

Evelyn looked utterly devastated.

“How can you not recognize your own mother? Lily, look at me! I’m your mom! We got separated during the flood two years ago!”

I frowned slightly, looking at her with nothing but unfamiliarity and displeasure.

“You really have the wrong person, ma’am. My parents are right here.”

Evelyn froze.

She looked at the four of us standing together and shook her head in disbelief.

No...

She couldn’t understand how her daughter, whom she had once had all to herself, had somehow become someone else’s child.

Why was her daughter calling another couple Mom and Dad?

The parents and students nearby were all startled by her frantic behavior.

My adoptive parents exchanged a glance.

They immediately realized that this woman must be my biological mother.

Grace looked at me questioningly.

I quietly shook my head, silently asking her not to reveal the truth.

Grace didn’t understand why I was pretending not to know the woman, but she chose to protect me anyway.

“Ma’am, you’ve really mistaken my daughter for someone else. She’s Emma Whitaker, not your daughter, Lily Hayes.”

Just then, Richard arrived and overheard the entire conversation.

The moment he saw me, he froze.

The hope in his eyes slowly faded into confusion as he stared at me.

“Whitaker? Why does she look so much like my Lily?”

Ms. Rachel stepped forward to calm everyone down.

“Mrs. Hayes, you really have the wrong child. Emma Whitaker was one of my students.”

With everyone staring at me, I felt embarrassed.

“Mom, please get up.”

Everyone assumed it was simply a case of mistaken identity. They thought Mrs. Hayes had lost her daughter and, in her desperation, mistaken another girl for her.

Some of the parents even tried to comfort her.

I was just beginning to relax when Evelyn suddenly lunged at me and grabbed at my clothes.

“Lily has a red birthmark on her stomach! Let me check!”

I screamed in fright.

Grace and Michael immediately rushed forward to shield me.

“Are you out of your mind?! How dare you tear at a girl’s clothes in front of everyone? Back off, or I’m calling the police!”

The scene descended into chaos.

Then Evelyn suddenly screamed,

“She has a birthmark! She’s my daughter!”

My heart sank.

She had seen it.

I stared at the news story for a long, long time. Why had they lost control and done something like that? Was it because of their anger at being deceived? Or was there also some guilt over what they had done to me?Did they still…love me?“Emma, your biological parents want to see you,” Grace said hesitantly.I shook my head.“No. I don’t want to see them.”Even though the story about my uncle and aunt saving me had been a lie, it couldn’t erase the fact that my parents had abandoned me in the flood and left me there to die.Even if they’d only acted on impulse in a moment of anger, the moment they left me behind, they must have believed that my death would set them free. There was no point wondering whether they loved me anymore. The moment I seriously started asking myself that question, I already knew the answer.I never questioned whether Michael and Grace truly loved me because I could feel their love every day. That was something I only came to understand as I grew ol

Grace popped another orange slice into my mouth.“I was just guessing. I wanted to get under your mom’s skin after everything she did to you. As for whether it’s true or not, who can say?”The sweet taste of orange washed away the bitter, foul taste of the concoction in my mouth. The men who had performed the so-called exorcism were charged with fraud and assault. They were ordered to pay me tens of thousands of dollars in compensation and were sentenced to three months in detention. My biological parents were detained for quite some time as well. After they were released, they went straight back to their hometown.Much later, I came across a news clip about them while scrolling through social media. It turned out my parents had taken Grace’s words to heart. Suspicious, they had returned to their hometown and confronted my grandparents. My grandparents denied everything. They even beat Richard with a cane, calling him an ungrateful son.It was my elderly great-grandfather, who

“Mom, you finally came…”I collapsed into Grace’s arms.Meanwhile, Evelyn was being held down by the police. The moment she heard me call someone else Mom, she went completely hysterical, cursing Michael and Grace with every filthy word she could think of.She was convinced that my adoptive parents had kidnapped me and turned me against her.Grace carefully placed me in Michael’s arms before rushing over and slapping Evelyn hard across the face.“Shut up!”Evelyn finally fell silent.Grace’s chest heaved with anger as she glared at her.“You deliberately abandoned Emma, and now you’re still complaining? She’s a good kid. Can’t you just leave her alone and let her live in peace?”“I just want my daughter! What’s wrong with that? I carried her for nine months! Why should I let some bitch like you take her away from me?”Even then, Evelyn didn’t think she’d done anything wrong.Grace seemed to remember something. A flicker of realization crossed her eyes.“Emma’s uncle and aun

Everyone at school eventually learned what had happened to me.Sophie was ostracized by her classmates, and perhaps out of guilt, my biological parents stopped coming after me for a while. With my adoptive parents keeping a close watch over me, I finally had some peace.According to what Caleb told me, Sophie hadn’t been to school in quite some time. She was even demanding to transfer to another school. Then one afternoon after school, I was on my way to buy a corn dog when I was suddenly dragged into a van.“Drive!”Richard clamped a hand over my mouth while Evelyn, wearing a mask and baseball cap, slammed her foot on the gas. They had clearly planned this for a long time.Evelyn glanced at me through the rearview mirror, her expression bordering on manic.“Don’t be scared, Lily. We’re taking you to Reverend Hawthorne for an exorcism. We’ve already spoken to him. He has a reputation for helping people like you. He said he can cure you.”I was terrified, my entire body frozen

When I got home, I nervously twisted the hem of my shirt and asked in a barely audible voice,“Mom, do you still want me?”Grace’s eyes immediately reddened. She pulled me into her arms and cried.“Yes. I promised I’d never abandon you.”I pouted miserably as tears streamed down my cheeks.I’d managed to hold back my tears when I was standing up to my biological parents at the police station. But now that Grace was holding me and comforting me, I couldn’t stop crying.Thank goodness.Mom wasn’t going to abandon me.Grace gently wiped away my tears.“Don’t cry, Emma. How did your aunt and uncle save you? Didn’t your biological parents help them?”I shook my head.“There was a flood. I fell into the water, and my aunt and uncle saved me. But they were swept away by the current and never made it back.“My biological parents weren’t in our hometown at the time. They were working in the city.”“How old were you?”“One.”Grace froze.“One? Then how do you know what happened?

Evelyn’s face changed dramatically.“How could that be?! You’re my own flesh and blood! How could I ever deliberately hurt you?”Richard exploded.“You bastards! What the hell have you been filling my daughter’s head with?!”He swung his fist at my adoptive father, but the quick-reacting officers immediately restrained him.Officer Reed slammed his hand on the desk, unable to stand it any longer.“I’ve never seen parents like you! These people saved your daughter and raised her so well, yet instead of being grateful, all you do is curse at them. No wonder this child doesn’t want anything to do with you!”Richard knew he was in the wrong, but he continued glaring furiously at my adoptive parents.A female officer walked over to me and gently asked,“Emma, sweetheart, why did you say they did it on purpose?”I looked at the hypocritical couple. There wasn’t the slightest trace of panic on their faces. They only looked heartbroken, as though their own daughter had falsely accus
