Chapter 4

Author: Luna D
The night before I left, I went back to the Moretti estate.

I'd come for the jewelry and photo albums my mother had left me, along with my passport and personal papers.

But the moment I pushed open my bedroom door, I stopped dead on the threshold.

The first thing I saw was a strip of fabric sticking out from under the shoe cabinet, my mother's crooked stitches caked with mud from people's shoes. When I looked up, I realized my graduation photos, my trophies, and every sign that I'd ever lived there were gone.

My chest tightened, and my breath caught. It took me two seconds to step inside.

Sophia came out of the bathroom in my silk pajamas.

When she saw me, she immediately covered her mouth.

"Emilia, why didn't you tell us you were coming? It's such a mess in here. I don't want you to get the wrong idea."

"This is my room."

Sophia bit her lip.

"Marco said that since you're marrying into the Romano family, you shouldn't keep the master bedroom here. I have so many clothes, so he let me move in."

She added softly, "You wouldn't begrudge me one empty room, would you?"

I walked over to the vanity.

The emerald bangle my mother had left me was on Sophia's wrist.

"Take it off."

Sophia clutched her wrist at once, and tears spilled down her face.

"Dante told me to wear it. He said if Mom were still here, she'd treat me like her own daughter too. Emilia, you already had all of Mom's love. Can't you spare me one thing she left behind?"

As she finished, she let go.

The bangle hit the floor and broke in two.

"Emilia, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. If it hurts you that much, hit me."

Sophia grabbed my hand and slapped it hard across her own face.

Just then, Marco and Dante pushed the door open.

There was a sharp crack.

Sophia clutched her face and crumpled to the floor.

Marco rushed over and shoved me away.

My lower back slammed into the vanity, and the pain drained every bit of strength out of me.

"Emilia, how dare you hit her?"

"She did it herself—"

"Shut up!"

Dante scooped Sophia up and shouted at me, "You hit her this hard, and now you're trying to blame her?"

Sophia shook her head, crying. "It's not Emilia's fault. I broke Mom's bangle. It's only right that she hates me."

Marco looked at the broken bangle on the floor and sneered. "It's just some dead woman's old bangle. Sophia did it a favor by wearing it. You'd hit someone over this? How are you any different from a rabid dog in a back alley?"

Dante stepped right on the pieces. The stone ground softly under his shoe. My lower back still throbbed, and a coppery taste rose in my throat.

"If Mom knew she'd given birth to something like you, she'd never rest in peace."

Sophia pleaded with them, her eyes red, "Stop it. If Emilia hears you talk about Mom like that, she'll be hurt."

The more she pleaded, the worse they cursed me.

"She doesn't get to be hurt. If we weren't the ones keeping trouble off her back, she'd have ended up dead in some alley a long time ago."

I didn't bother explaining. I just picked up the papers and photo albums my mother had left me.

Marco saw the passport in my hand, and his face darkened.

"Where do you think you're going?"

"Palermo."

"Who said you could leave?"

"I've given Daniel the family crest and my statement ending the marriage alliance. As of today, I'm not marrying anyone for the Moretti family, and I'm done working for either of you for free."

Marco was so angry he laughed. "You think once you walk away from this name, anyone will take you seriously?"

"That's not your problem."

Dante pointed at the door.

"Get out! Walk out that door today, and even if Luca dumps you and you kneel outside until you die, we won't take you back."

Sophia ran after me and pressed an umbrella into my hand.

"Emilia, it's raining out."

Then, in a voice only I could hear, she said softly, "See? They still love me more."

With that, she took two steps back and cried out, "Take the umbrella, Emilia. I don't mind getting rained on. Nobody cares about me anyway."

My two brothers immediately crowded around her.

I left my key to the estate in the entryway.

Right before the front door closed behind me, I heard Marco sneer, "Three days, tops. She'll come crawling back like a dog."

At one in the morning, I dragged my luggage out of the apartment.

At dawn, I took a car to the airport. My flight was headed for Palermo, Sicily.

It wasn't until 9:30 that Luca showed up at the church.

My two brothers were with him.

Sophia was wearing my bridal robe, with the diamond brooch Luca had given her pinned to her chest.

She looked around the empty church and asked timidly, "Is Emilia still mad at me? Maybe I should wait until after she says her vows to come out."

Luca put his arm around her shoulders.

"Why should you hide? No matter what scene she makes, it won't change the fact that you matter more than she does."

Marco checked the time, his face grim.

"Emilia's still not here?"

Dante sneered, "That's the only trick that woman has, and it's a cheap one."

Claire hurried in through a side door.

"Mr. Romano, what are you all doing here?"

Luca frowned.

"We're redoing the wedding at ten. Did you forget?"

Claire looked at Luca, then at the empty altar.

"But Ms. Moretti canceled the wedding three days ago. The priest and all the guests were notified, and yesterday we even took down both families' crests."

Six months later, Bellini Shipping's new route to New York officially launched.I was standing backstage at the launch event in Palermo.A coworker straightened my cuff and noticed the repaired emerald bangle on my wrist. A thread of gold traced the crack that remained. The inside of the bangle rested against my pulse, warm from my skin. It wasn't perfect, but it felt more like mine than it ever had."Emilia, you're up."I nodded. The stage lights came up.Every representative was there, and my name was on the big screen.Head of European Markets at Bellini Shipping, New York Route Project Lead.Emilia Moretti. The partners in the audience stood and applauded. The livestream camera panned across the seats. Luca was in the last row, and my two brothers sat on the other side. When I saw them, my breathing only stumbled for half a beat before I turned back to the camera. They didn't contact me, and they didn't force their way backstage. After the event, a reporter asked, "Ms. Moretti, whe

Before I went back to New York, I had my lawyer formally sue Sophia. She would cover the cost of repairing the emerald bangle and its loss in value. The Moretti family would replenish the education fund Marco had diverted to open her gallery, and everything bought with that money would be recovered. After that, Sophia was taken back to New York for an internal review by the family council. She'd faked a death threat, used my phone behind my back, and nearly wrecked a marriage alliance. The council revoked her right to use the Moretti name and to call on the family's guards, and barred her from coming near my home or my workplace. But they didn't abandon her.Marco arranged an ordinary place for her to live and gave her only a basic allowance. Bruno would keep an eye on her, and she was no longer allowed at any family event."She did wrong, and she has to answer for it. But the Moretti family took her in. We can't just throw her out on the street to die."I didn't comment. That clarity

Sophia followed me all the way to Sicily. She stopped me in the hotel lobby. The moment she saw me, she dropped to her knees.A crowd gathered around us in seconds."Emilia, I was wrong. Please don't give up on Marco and Dante. They haven't been able to eat or sleep for days. If you come back to New York, I'll leave the Moretti family right away."Luca and my two brothers arrived just then.Sophia cried even harder. "I'm the one who took Emilia's place. I'd give her my life if that's what it takes."As she said it, she suddenly threw herself at the corner of a nearby table.Dante caught her.Sophia let herself fall into his arms, but Dante only steadied her and let go right away."Stand up straight."Sophia's crying faltered.I had my coworker open the laptop."Since everyone's here, let's settle all of it once and for all."The first clip was the security footage from the garage on the wedding day.The so-called death mark was just where a utility truck had scraped off the paint and e

The next day, my two brothers asked to meet me.They chose my mother's favorite restaurant in Palermo.By the time I got there, they'd already been waiting for two hours.Marco pushed a document box across to me."These are letters Mom left. They were locked in the safe at the New York estate all this time."I didn't take it.They both went quiet."Get to the point."Dante's voice was hoarse. "We know we were wrong. Before Mom died, she asked us to look after you, and we didn't."Marco went on, "But we're still family. Come back to New York with us. There will always be a place for you in the Moretti family."I looked at them."My place?"Half of Sophia's walk-in closet?"Marco avoided my eyes."Your room's been put back the way it was. We found your trophies and photos too.""And the bedspread?"Neither of them could answer right away. The bedspread my mother had sewn by hand had been shoved under the shoe cabinet.Dante lowered his head."It got ruined in the wash, so we couldn't sav

That night, Luca submitted a meeting request through his lawyer and waited for me in the lobby of my hotel. The moment I stepped off the elevator, he came toward me."Let's talk. Ten minutes."I checked the time."Fine."He visibly relaxed. We sat down in a corner of the café.Luca set the wedding ring on the table."We'll redo the wedding. This time we do everything your way. Sophia won't be there."The ring clinked against the saucer. My stomach dropped with it, as if my body still remembered all those nights I'd spent wearing it and waiting for him."What else?""I can buy the apartment. You can choose whether we marry in New York or Sicily. Emilia, I've done this much. Isn't it enough?"I laughed at the question. "You think I left because the wedding wasn't good enough?""Isn't that it?""Then listen carefully."I pushed the ring back."On the anniversary of my mother's death, you promised to go to church with me."Sophia said she was feeling down, and you took her to the opera."L

Three months later, the European Ports Alliance held its final summit.Outside the venue in Palermo, the press, shipping companies, and representatives of the families' legitimate businesses crowded the entrance. After we'd made it through the previous round, Bellini Shipping put me in charge of the New York market team. I was leading the final presentation myself.Luca and my two brothers flew over overnight, but venue security stopped them at the entrance."The three of you aren't on the guest list."Luca held out a Romano family business card. The guard glanced at it."Business visitors need to submit a meeting request in advance."Marco said in a low voice, "We're Emilia's family."A staffer checked the list."None of you are listed as her family."All they could do was stand outside the glass doors.I walked onstage in a black suit. When I saw the three of them outside the glass doors, my palm went damp around the clicker. But as the route map lit up behind me, my breathing steadi
