The school didn't provide housing, so the three of us rented a place nearby together.

It wasn't until I got back to the apartment, hollowed-out, that I remembered I didn't have a key.

A month earlier, Elias and I had picked the place together.

The agent gave us two keys, and Elias took both.

He said Giulietta would feel unsafe without a key, so she should have one.

He also said I was always losing things, so he would keep the other one, and since he would always be with me, I had nothing to worry about.

But he broke that promise. I was locked out with nowhere to go.

I called Elias ten times. He rejected every call.

In the end he blocked me outright.

I crouched by the door and watched the sky darken outside.

They didn't come back, laughing and talking, until half past eight.

Giulietta had her arm through Elias's. His hands were empty. There was no strawberry cake.

The gentle smile on his face froze the instant he saw me.

"Liliana, what are you doing here?"

The question sent a sharp pain through my chest.

I did not know how to answer the werewolf who was supposed to become my fated mate.

Why was I standing outside the apartment we had rented together?

I stood up and spoke quietly.

"You didn't give me a key, and you wouldn't take my calls.

"I had nowhere else to go."

Elias seemed to realize how wrong his question was. Guilt flickered in his eyes, and he hurried over to put his arms around me.

"That's not what I meant, Liliana.

"Come inside. You're freezing."

Once I was through the door, I noticed a cot in the living room.

When we rented the place, the agreement had been that Elias and I would take the master bedroom and Giulietta would have the second bedroom to herself.

That cot shouldn't have existed.

Holding the hot water Elias had poured for me, I looked up at him.

"What is that bed for?"

He looked away, unable to meet my eyes.

"Giulietta doesn't want us sleeping together. She says if we're too close, she'll feel lonely on her own."

"Since I'm a man, it'd be awkward for Giulietta if I slept in the living room. I'm afraid you'll have to make do."

So that was it.

Whenever Giulietta had a whim, my parents would leave me out when they bought clothes, fill the table with food I disliked, or suddenly decide to travel without me.

Now Elias was the same as them.

Because Giulietta didn't want something, he could make me suffer for it as though it were only natural.

My feelings and my life had stopped mattering next to Giulietta a long time ago.

"I'm not sleeping on a cot. We agreed we would share the master bedroom. If you want to sleep out here, you can."

Giulietta's eyes went red.

"Are you angry with me, Liliana?

"But I really do feel lonely. The two of you are going to be mates, and I'm all by myself.

"If neither of you wants me, how am I supposed to get through school alone?

"Please, Liliana. Take pity on me."

She looked fragile and innocent as she cried, and the hesitation on Elias's face hardened into certainty.

"She's only afraid of being alone, Liliana. You're her older sister. Can't you be reasonable and let her have this?

"You're a werewolf. You can't handle something as small as sleeping in the living room?

"If you won't agree, then move out yourself!"

I stared at him in disbelief. The heart I had thought was numb twisted so painfully that I could not breathe.

From the very beginning, the one who was alone had been me.

Elias and I had agreed to apply to a different university for grad school together.

But as the deadline approached, he suddenly changed his mind.

I only found out later that he had planned all along to apply here with Giulietta and simply hadn't told me.

I was so in love with him then that I switched schools without hesitation, just to be with him.

None of it meant anything.

Because from the start, they had intended to leave me behind.

I was only too foolish and too stubborn, chasing after two people who had deliberately walked away.

My love went cold along with my heart, until I didn't even have the energy to raise my voice.

"Elias, let's break up."

He only frowned at my words.

"I know you're upset, Liliana, but I don't want to hear that a second time.

"Sleep on the cot for now. I'll buy you a new bed later. Stop making a scene."

In his eyes, all my hurt and humiliation amounted to nothing more than a tantrum he could dismiss.

I drew a deep breath and spoke softly.

"Fine. I won't make a fuss anymore."

  • My Fated Mate Chose My Sister, So I Left   第9章

I rented a small, nicely finished place near campus, and finally had my own bed and my own room. The day after I moved, I organized all my data and reported Giulietta to the school for plagiarizing my paper. Her advisor thought highly of the paper and told her to refine it and submit it to a journal. But Giulietta lacked the ability to finish it, and without my complete dataset, she could not make any progress. That had already made her advisor suspicious. Once I filed my report, the truth was easy to uncover.Giulietta tried to argue her way out of it, but she couldn't even say where the data had come from. No one was going to believe her.In the end the school expelled her.The day after Giulietta was expelled, my mother came to campus looking for me.Seeing how much older her face looked and how her hair had turned almost completely white, I softened a little after all and agreed to hear her out.I expected her to plead for Giulietta. She didn't."Was the trip abroad hard on you? Di

After I got back, I stayed at a hotel near campus while I looked for a place of my own.But Elias found me after my first class. He looked haggard, with dark circles under his eyes, unshaven stubble on his jaw, and one button fastened into the wrong buttonhole. When he saw me, his eyes lit up with joy."You're back, Liliana. I thought you were really going to stay abroad."I took a step back, putting distance between us."I still have school. But my coming back has nothing to do with you. We've broken up."Plenty of students nearby were watching. A few who knew the truth explained it to the rest, and the looks they gave Elias grew more contemptuous.Elias seemed not to notice any of it and kept gazing at me longingly."Can we talk, Liliana?"For the sake of what we had, at least give me a chance to explain."He brought up what we had, and my chest only tightened further. Our feelings had been so real that his betrayal was that much harder to accept. When we first got together, I though

After two weeks abroad, the fieldwork officially came to an end.Professor Reed said my fundamentals were solid and that I had done well during the fieldwork. He gave me a day off to explore the area.I filled the table with local specialties at a nearby restaurant, took a photo, and posted it. Elias and my mother both liked it immediately.Ever since I left, they had all been unusually attentive. It was as if overnight, everyone had started loving me again. After dinner, back at the hotel, Giulietta called. Her voice carried a deliberate, cloying sweetness over the phone."Aren't you over it yet, Liliana? Elias already bought you a new twin bed and the best mattress they had."I answered flatly."Use it yourselves. I'm not coming back."Giulietta spoke with the condescending magnanimity of someone bestowing a favour."Stop sulking, Liliana. If you come back now, I'll even let you share the master bedroom with Elias."She sounded so entitled that it struck me as almost funny."Giuliett

My days abroad doing fieldwork were busy and fulfilling. Working beside Professor Reed, I learned a great deal.Elias kept trying to win me back. I never replied again.Three days after I left, my mother contacted me out of nowhere."Liliana, are you throwing another tantrum? Are you dropping out of school now?"If you keep acting up like this, I'm not paying your tuition!"I was quiet for a while before slowly typing a reply."You've forgotten. I've been paying my own tuition all along."When I first said I wanted to go to grad school, my mother was strongly against it.She said that after raising me for so many years, I should be working, earning money, and paying the family back instead of staying in school.Luckily I had worked through college and won a scholarship, and my savings were enough to cover grad school.Only after she heard she wouldn't have to pay did my mother grudgingly agree to let me keep studying.Throughout the application process, I searched online for affordable

Elias had called sixteen times and sent fifty-three texts."Where did you go?"Why are all your things gone?"Liliana, why did you leave the bracelet I gave you in the entryway?"Please. Please don't shut me out."Twenty hours had passed since I left, and he hadn't rested for a moment, still trying to reach me.Holding my phone, I read through his messages one by one.His tone grew more and more urgent, until by the end there was nothing left but pleading."Liliana, at least tell me why you left. Can you please not ignore me?"I looked at his last message, my fingers tightening slightly around the phone. His question left me with no idea how to answer.Where was I supposed to start? With the university he had switched to without telling me, or with the twenty-four-hour bus ride?In the end I sent him one line."I already told you we were breaking up. You just didn't believe me. I meant it."After I sent it, I turned off my screen and took a car to meet my advisor. On the way I got a ca

The video never stopped circulating. In the end, I lost my chance to join Professor Cole's research group and was assigned to another advisor, Professor Nathaniel Reed.Professor Reed spent most of each year doing fieldwork abroad, so few students wanted to work with him.But when he invited me to join an overseas fieldwork project, I accepted.I had planned to go back and pack. But the moment I walked in, I heard Elias and Giulietta laughing together. They were half-reclined on the large bed in the master bedroom, the one that should have been half mine, leaning intimately against each other as they played a game.My suffering had left no trace on either of them."What are you two doing?"Elias glanced up at me once and went back to his game."You're back."I bit my lip, my voice hoarse."Why are you sitting so close together?"Giulietta laughed and leaned into his arms. He didn't move away."We're only playing a game, Liliana. Don't read into it."Elias pinched her cheek, still press
