That afternoon, Beatrice came to my office.

Jasper personally escorted her in.

Her white hair was carefully styled.

She was old, yet her face was completely free of wrinkles.

Every gesture spoke of a woman who had lived a life of luxury and never been denied anything.

"So, you are Judge Veyra."

She sat down across from me and looked me over.

She no longer recognized me.

"At least you're pretty."

I had seen that look once, years ago.

The first time she came to our house, she looked at my mother in exactly the same way.

The next day, she ran my grandparents down with her car.

"Seraphina is outstanding, but you turned her down. Why?"

She looked at me with open mockery.

"Women understand women. Tell me. What do you want?"

I looked at her calmly.

"And you are?"

Her flawless expression froze for a second.

Then her contempt deepened.

"Don't play games with me. Money, power—I can give you anything you want. Seraphina wants this position, she will get it."

I looked down at the file in my hands.

"A better candidate has been chosen and the results have been announced. Please leave."

A crack appeared in Beatrice's composure.

"I have seen plenty of girls like you. You think sleeping with a few men means you have someone powerful protecting you? You can't take on the Hales just by sleeping with a few more men! And this profession has no room for a woman as corrupt as you!"

The more she spoke, the angrier she became. She slammed her hand on the desk.

The sound pulled my attention away from the case file I was reading.

Thirty years ago, she had pounded the table and used her unborn child to beg Arthur to acquit her.

Thirty years later, she slammed her hand on my desk and lectured me about justice.

The file crumpled in my hand. I looked up at her and smiled.

"Mrs. Hale, you seem to know a lot about sleeping your way to the top. Is that how you got here?"

Beatrice stared at me, then stood up.

"Judge Veyra, I'm just a mother who loves her daughter. How dare you slander me like this? You are not fit to call yourself a woman."

The commotion drew the attention of everyone outside my office.

A mother who loved her child.

Not fit to call myself a woman.

I thought about those words, leaned back in my chair and looked straight at her.

"Mrs. Hale, stop causing a scene and leave my office."

She was too angry to speak. Before she could leave, the office door suddenly opened.

"Elowen, you have disappointed me deeply!"

Hugo stood in the doorway and brought his cane down hard on the floor.

"Mrs. Hale is Judge Hale's wife. How could you speak to her like that? What will everyone in the legal profession think of us?"

Beatrice scoffed, folded her arms, and looked at me contemptuously.

Hugo came over and looked at me in disappointment.

"Apologize to Mrs. Hale."

I looked at that small, aging man.

He had defended the dignity of the law his whole life.

Yet he had no idea what the people he revered were really like.

I lowered my head and defied him for the first time.

"I will not apologize to her."

"Hire Seraphina for that position!"

I raised my head.

"That's impossible."

No sooner had I spoken than a voice came from the doorway. "Is that so?"

I will not forget that voice as long as I live.

The next day, my mother and I went to my grandparents' graves.More than thirty years had passed, but their graves were still carefully maintained. My mother laid a bouquet of flowers before them. Her mind had grown much clearer lately, and she had become quieter too.But that day, she seemed to have endless things she wanted to tell them. She sat there from sunrise until sunset. The wind rustled the fallen leaves around us.Only when the sun began to set did she finally say she was tired.I walked her home slowly. That night, we slept in the same bed, in the house I had recently bought for us.The room was safe and warm.We would never be cold again. We would never go hungry again. And no one would ever mock her again.Life gradually returned to normal.Jasper resigned soon after the hearing. No one asked him to stay. Before he left, he apologized to me and Hugo.He said Arthur had forced him to testify against me.Neither of us answered. He left the courthouse without a shred of dign

A month later, the court handed down its judgment.Beatrice was found guilty of aggravated murder and sentenced to death.Arthur was convicted of perverting the course of justice and protecting a murderer. He was sentenced to life in prison. The day after the judgment was announced, Seraphina posted a statement online. She admitted that she had used her family's influence to falsify parts of her academic record. The next day, her law school revoked her degree.Everything changed overnight. My Facebook account and email inbox were flooded with messages. Some came from people I knew. Most came from complete strangers. Many apologized. Others offered words of support. Some simply thanked me.They said I had shown them that there was another way forward. One message came from Lily, whose academic competition award Seraphina had stolen years ago.Her email address seemed strangely familiar.I followed that faint memory and searched through the recent graduate applications.I realized that L

Three days earlier, I had told my mother that I would take her to hear Arthur apologize to her in person. She could barely recognize anyone anymore, but she still burst into tears. She kept murmuring, "Justice. I want justice."I combed her hair and helped her change into clean clothes. Now, I brought her before Arthur. The man who had betrayed her thirty years ago.The man who had destroyed her life, only to tear open those wounds again thirty years later.Arthur looked at her. His lips moved, but no words came out.My mother studied his face for a long time, as if struggling to remember who he was.Everyone watched in silence. Then my mother raised her hand and slapped him with all her strength. Not one person moved to stop her.Beatrice gasped and sank to the floor. The blow sent Arthur stumbling sideways. He grabbed the table to steady himself."Arthur, you are a beast."For one brief moment, my mother's mind seemed completely clear. Her eyes burned with anger, but her voice was fr

"Elowen!"Arthur realized what I intended to do, and his carefully maintained composure finally shattered. He dropped the gavel and pointed at me."You never filed a request for a retrial! You can't do this. It's against procedure and against the law!"I laughed and dropped a stack of appeal documents in front of him.He picked them up and flipped through them one by one.The first was from 15 years ago, the year I entered the legal profession.Appeal dismissed by: Arthur Hale. The second was from 12 years ago, the year I officially became a judge.Appeal dismissed by: Arthur Hale. The third was from 10 years ago.Every single appeal had been dismissed by him. Then he reached the final document. It had been filed three days earlier.Granted by: Elowen Veyra. After thirty years, I had finally granted the retrial myself.I raised my head and looked at him.For the first time, I watched panic spread across that once-commanding face."So it really is you. Lowe..."He called me by my childh

The whole room fell silent.Arthur froze and stared at me in disbelief."You are...?"Beatrice jerked her head up and stared at me as well.Seraphina frowned, clearly confused. The courtroom was dead silent.Arthur looked at the screen again, and his lips began to tremble.I looked at him and continued calmly, "Who am I? You don't need to know. You only need to know that the woman in that video is my mother, Maren Veyra. The same woman you claimed could never have raised a real lawyer."My hand curled into a fist as I gave him a mocking smile."So let me ask you this, Judge Hale.""If my family isn't good enough to produce a real lawyer, what about the family you started with your lover after abandoning your wife and daughter? Was that family somehow good enough?"The courtroom erupted.Hugo went completely still.Jasper stood frozen on the witness stand.Camera shutters clicked nonstop.Even the livestream comments changed direction.[Holy shit—what does that mean? What a twist!!!][L

Three days later, the courtroom gallery was packed with reporters.Cameras were everywhere, recording the proceedings without permission. One camera had even been set up in the best spot in the room to livestream the hearing.I glanced at the screen. The title read, “Judge Hale Returns to Correct a Miscarriage of Justice and Root Out Corruption in the Legal Profession.”Even after all these years, Arthur still had enormous influence.Arthur sat in the center of the bench, dressed in his judicial robes with a gavel before him.Seraphina and Beatrice stood together to one side, arm in arm.Their eyes were slightly red, and both looked quite emotional.I walked slowly to the defendant's table and waited for the show to begin."Today, on behalf of the Department of Justice, I am bringing charges against Elowen Veyra. I will now present the evidence against her."His voice was firm and authoritative, his expression solemn and impartial.Seraphina's résumé appeared on the screen first. At ei
