Chapter 2

Author: One Grain
I still remembered an incident after a basketball game ended.

I was sitting in the audience when I saw Diana carrying a bag of drinks. She was rushing toward Adam, who had just stepped off the court.

“Adam, you’re seriously amazing at basketball. I got all these drinks just for you. They’re all your favorite!”

I watched them with a calm expression. I had always trusted Adam.

Adam pushed Diana away and walked toward me with an annoyed expression.

“Grace, you see another woman fawning over me like that, and you’re just sitting here? Do you even love me anymore?”

He held my hand and raised it up for Diana to see. “Diana, I know we’ve known each other our whole lives, but I love Grace. So, from now on, stop doing things that make my girlfriend uncomfortable.”

At our graduation prom, she came up with an even more meticulous plan.

When the spotlights focused on the center of the venue, Diana stood in the middle of the dance floor with a microphone in her hand.

“Adam, I’ve had a crush on you since we were kids. Break up with Grace and attend the after-party with me tonight.”

Adam looked at her with displeasure.

“I’ve told you before. I have a girlfriend. Quit being so annoying.”

With that, he held me in his arms and gave me a deep, passionate kiss in front of everyone.

He used the most direct way to tell the crowd that I was the one he loved.

Someone took a picture of us and posted it in the school forum. Many people wished us well.

We were known as the perfect couple on campus. I thought so too at the time.

However, I finally understood that those passionate promises from back then did not last forever.

People changed.

Diana posted another series of photos in her feed.

The two of them drank and sang by the seaside, watched the sunrise, and spent a wild night in an ocean-view room.

Adam closed his eyes and lay quietly on the pillow.

I looked at his face. It was so familiar yet so foreign. I remembered the way he had knelt on one knee amid swirling ribbons and slipped the ring onto my finger.

He had said, “Grace, you’re the girl I fell for in my youth, and you’re the one I want for the rest of my days. I’ll love you through every season of my life.”

I felt a dull ache in my chest. At this point, I had to accept the fact that he had betrayed me.

That young man who only had eyes for me had already forgotten my name. He was lost in the warmth of someone else’s smile.

I wiped away my tears and took screenshots of the evidence. Then, I drove to the wedding planning office.

“Ms. Atwood, this venue is very hard to book. Are you sure you want to cancel?” my wedding planner, Felicity, asked me with a puzzled look.

“All the preparations are done. If you cancel now, you’ll be charged a fifty-percent cancellation fee.

“And Mr. Wayman personally designed the whole reception setup. He confirmed every single detail in person. Are you sure about this?”

I recalled one evening after the proposal. Adam had proudly produced a roll of blueprints and waved it in front of me.

“Grace, guess what this is?”

I thought it was a photo of the two of us.

He raised his index finger and shook it before spreading the blueprints out on the table.

“I booked the ballroom at the Grand Plaza Hotel today and went to a wedding design studio. I worked with the lead designer to draw up this whole layout.

“It’s all based on your favorite color, purple. We’ll have deep purple velvet tablecloths with gold-rimmed flatware. At the entrance, there’s a flower arch made of violets and hydrangeas.

“There will be crystal candelabras lining both sides of the aisle, and strings of purple orchids will be hanging from chandeliers on the ceiling.”

He pointed at a small detail in the corner of the blueprint.

“I added a mirrored flower wall behind the head table. When the light hits it, the whole ballroom will glow purple.”

I threw myself into his arms and looked up at him with adoration.

“Adam, I love you so much.”

The Grand Plaza Hotel was one of the most popular wedding venues in the world.

During peak season, it had to be booked at least a year in advance, and its minimum spending requirement was absurdly high.

He had been busy with his project lately, yet he still managed to make time to arrange everything on his own.

He held me gently in his arms.

“You’re the one I chose to spend the rest of my life with. Of course I’m going to give you the very best I possibly can.”

However, not even half a year later, I was no longer the one he loved.

He had worked so hard on every little detail because he genuinely wanted to marry me.

Yet, somewhere along the way, Diana’s charm had won him over.

It was a shame he would never get to see the wedding he had orchestrated so thoughtfully.

Dylan opened the car door for me and softly asked, “All done talking?”“Yeah, all done.”It was autumn. Dylan instinctively shielded me from the cold wind and guided me into the car.“What do you feel like eating? I’ll take you somewhere.”I took out my phone and browsed through nearby restaurants.“There’s a good pizza place around here. Want to give it a try?”“Wherever you want.”He drove steadily and looked totally composed. When we arrived at our destination, I prepared to unbuckle my seatbelt and get out. Just then, Dylan grabbed my arm.He looked at me with uncharacteristic intensity.“Grace.”“Hmm?”His gaze held a depth of emotion that I could not quite read.“Some people get bored with the same old stability and throw you away for something new and exciting. But to me, love isn’t about dramatic thrills. It’s about showing up every day and never leaving.“Grace, I’ve waited for you for five years. Are you willing to give me a chance?”I stared at him, and I wa

Two months passed. I had just stepped out of the research institute with Dylan when I saw Adam rush toward me. He had a delighted look on his face. When he noticed Dylan beside me, his expression darkened. He walked straight up to us and said to him, “Why are you hanging around Grace?”Before Adam could get any closer, I stepped forward and positioned myself in front of Dylan.“Adam, how dare you show your face here?”His expression dimmed, and he looked at me with a pitiful gaze.“Grace, can you just give me a moment and hear me out? We need to talk.”After two months apart, he had become quite haggard.“There’s nothing for us to talk about.”“Grace, please.”I turned to Dylan.“Wait for me in the car.”Dylan hesitated.“Are you sure you’ll be okay on your own?”“Yeah. Don’t worry.”I gave him a reassuring smile and added, “I promised you we would have dinner together tonight. I won’t go back on my word.”He nodded and turned to leave.Once Dylan was completely out of

The ability to throw myself fully into work put my mind at ease.At lunchtime, my former college roommate, Naomi Reeves, sent me a screenshot of the chat from the alumni group.[Grace, is Diana talking about you in these messages?]I opened the alumni group chat, and Diana was calling me out by name in the group.[Grace is so petty. She canceled her wedding over a normal trip. She made Adam think it was my fault that she called it off.][If she didn’t want to get married, she should’ve just said so. Why frame me?]I scrolled through the entire chat.Originally, a classmate had simply asked in the group whether anyone knew why Adam and I had called off our wedding.Diana was the one who replied to the message. [It’s all because she’s so immature. She got ridiculously jealous over nothing, and now, she’s turned this into a public spectacle.]Right after that, she sent me a private message.[You two are over. Adam is mine now. You’ve already embarrassed him in front of his fam

“Grace, forget whatever Diana told you. Just come home first, okay?”Adam panicked and instinctively shifted the blame onto Diana.“She’s just jealous of you. She can’t stand to see you happy, so she’s trying to stir up trouble and ruin our wedding.”I sent him the screenshots I took, one by one.“You can’t fool me. You’re the figure in all those photos.”The other end of the line became dead silent. His lies had been completely exposed, and he could no longer make any excuses.“Grace, I’m sorry. I just got carried away for a moment. “A lot of guys make this kind of mistake. It only happened once. Please just forgive—”Before he could finish his sentence, I hung up.Tomorrow was my first official day of work. I had to get myself into the right state of mind, and no one was worth the distraction.Perhaps it was because of jet lag and heartbreak, but I did not sleep well at first.I could only rely on melatonin to fall asleep. My dreams brought me back to the time Adam too

After landing in Pinnacle City, I pulled my luggage to the arrivals gate and immediately spotted Harriet waiting in the crowd. The moment our gazes met, I could tell she was overjoyed to have me back.On the way to the apartment, she earnestly said, “Grace, I honestly didn’t think you’d actually come.“Back then, you were the brightest and most promising student in your entire graduating class.“When I got that overseas research opportunity, you were the first person I asked. When you turned it down, I was truly disappointed.”She sighed softly and added, “But I’m so glad to see you’re still a clear-headed, independent woman.“Rest well tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the lab.”The apartment Harriet had arranged for me was simple yet cozy. It was fully equipped with all the daily necessities.I was about to unpack when I spotted a graduation photo of me and Harriet sitting on the table. It instantly brought back memories. By the time I finally returned home, it was night. Feeling utterly exhausted, I looked around the room. Every corner bore traces of our life together. After five years together, I could still remember Adam’s warmth and affection. He had made me feel so safe that I truly believed he would be my rock for life. However, feelings changed, and people changed. The love we shared was real, but so was his betrayal.I threw out everything that reminded me of us. I tore down every photo from the wall and shredded every love letter I had kept for years. Then, I slipped the matching ring he had designed off my finger. I dropped it in the trash without hesitation. Just then, he sent me a message. [Grace, I bought a ticket home for tomorrow. I’ll see you soon. I can’t wait for our wedding the day after tomorrow. We’re finally going to be husband and wife.][I miss you so much!]I did not want to reply to him.Just as I was about to turn off my phone, I received another notification.
