Even after they destroyed my wine cellar, it wasn't over.

The night of the police raid, Luca's most trusted right-hand man, Matteo Bianchi, was killed.

Because Luca had named me as the suspect, his crew naturally blamed me.

I stayed home, waiting for them to clear my name. But even by the day of Matteo's funeral, Luca hadn't contacted me once.

I went to the church anyway, because Matteo had helped me so much.

Whenever Luca was busy, Matteo ran errands to the winery for me and went with me to the church to finalize the wedding arrangements.

Not long ago, he'd stood in front of me laughing. He'd said that on my wedding day, he would sit as far from the wine as possible so Luca couldn't make him drink for him again. Now he lay cold in a coffin.

I'd barely reached the top of the steps when Matteo's mother recognized me.

She had been so unsteady that others were holding her up. The moment she saw me, she tore free, rushed over, snatched the flowers from my arms, and threw them to the ground. "How dare you show up here! Yesterday I dressed him for burial, and his chest was covered in blood... Just the other day, he was still telling me about your wedding. He was so young..."

Before I could react, she slapped me across the face.

She sobbed so hard she could barely breathe, her grip tightening around my hand. "They all say you're the one who leaked it! He's dead because of you! Why weren't you the one who died?!"

Matteo's younger brother, Dino Bianchi, blocked the church doors. His eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, and he made no attempt to hide his hatred. "You're not welcome here!"

People inside the church turned to stare, and muttered curses rippled through the church.

I didn't pull away from Matteo's mother. She had just lost her son. I couldn't blame her.

But Luca was inside. He knew I hadn't leaked the address. All he had to do was come out and say they hadn't identified the person responsible yet and that the search of my farm had turned up nothing. At least then, everyone would know there was no proof that I'd gotten Matteo killed.

But Sofia came out first. "Showing up here today is only going to make her feel worse."

I faced all those familiar faces in the church and defended myself. "They've already searched my farm, and they've checked my phone and my books. If you don't want me to come in today, I'll leave, but I had nothing to do with the leak."

Sofia frowned. "Do you really need to bring this up today?"

Then Luca came out of the church and stepped between us.

He gently told someone to help Matteo's mother back inside. Then he turned to me and ordered me home. "Matteo just died. Seeing you will only upset them more. I'll keep investigating, but don't confront them today."

I looked at him for a few seconds.

While everyone called me a murderer, I'd waited for him to come out.

But when he finally stood before me, his first words were still an order to leave.

I finally understood that waiting for him to defend me was pointless. I had to clear my own name.

I bent down, picked up the flowers, and placed them on the stone wall outside the church. "These are for Matteo."

Then I walked down the steps without looking back at Luca.

The phone rang soon after I got home. It was Luca.

"I've called off the wedding for now." He tried to sound soothing, but his voice grated on me. "Everyone's watching you right now. Going ahead with the wedding would only make things worse. Once we get to the bottom of the leak, we'll set a new date."

His words sounded just like what he'd told me a few days earlier—that it was just a routine investigation.

Whenever something went wrong, he made every decision for me, then promised it would all be over soon.

The wedding was no different. He'd canceled the church booking and the reception without even asking me first.

Luca kept making promises on the other end of the line. "Once this blows over, I'll give you the perfect wedding."

The whole thing suddenly seemed ridiculous.

He was still convinced that once this trouble passed and he chose a new date, I would marry him as if nothing had happened.

I stopped listening. "Got it."

After hanging up, I scrolled through my contacts and found a number I hadn't called or texted in years.

The year I turned 18, when my adoptive father told me the truth about where I came from, he also gave me this number.

He said my birth parents had always known where I was and had kept a way out of Sicily open for me.

But their identities made it impossible to acknowledge our relationship publicly, and I'd never wanted anything from them anyway.

I sent a text. "Can you arrange for me to leave Sicily?"

The reply came almost immediately. "Anytime."

I stared at that single word for a long time and began seriously imagining what my life might look like outside Sicily.

After my identity became public, my relationship with my parents slowly improved.Of course I'd resented them. For more than 20 years, one had run the Moretti family while the other had run the Vincenti family, yet they left me on a farm where I couldn't tell anyone who I was.Even after we acknowledged our relationship, things were awkward. Still, we began having dinner together now and then.Sometimes, as I watched them bicker over the past, I thought maybe taking the time to get to know each other wouldn't be so bad after all.I thought we had plenty of time. But then something went wrong at the peace talks up north. The Moretti and Vincenti families were preparing to renegotiate control of several routes they'd fought over for years when a group determined to keep the two families at war bombed the meeting. The fire burned for hours. Neither my father nor my mother made it out.Enzo returned with the ring my father always wore, and Carlo brought me my mother's watch.Looking at tho

After the leak case closed, more merchants began doing business with me.At first, only a few small wineries used my routes. Soon, merchants were using my network to ship olive oil and dried fruit too. When the farm ran out of space, both Enzo and Carlo came to see me.Lorenzo gave me an old warehouse on the city's south side, while Isabella gave me use of an unused dock on the east side.I accepted both, but my relationship with them remained distant. As my business expanded, the gossip grew uglier. Some claimed I was only a farm girl who'd entered this world because of Luca. After I acquired the warehouse and the dock, rumors spread that I'd slept with someone even more powerful. At a wine merchants' gathering, I heard someone laugh. "What takes everyone else decades to build, she got by sleeping her way to the top."Others joined in. "Being pretty sure pays. If she keeps sleeping around while she's young, she'll never have to worry about money again."Luca's expression darkened, and

After reopening the winery, I changed drivers and ports and established my own shipping route off the island. The first wine shipment reached the buyers without trouble, and the orders that had been on hold began pouring in.Luca came by the winery now and then. He'd haul crates, fix the warehouse door, or ride into town with the workers. On the night the second shipment left, I planned to oversee the loading at the port myself.Things around the winery still weren't completely safe. When Luca heard about the trip, he offered to come along. He promised he'd only handle security on the road and stay out of my convoy and route planning.I didn't say no.The lead trucks had just entered the loading area when the last truck suddenly accelerated, crashed through the barrier, and sped off.Luca reacted instantly. He drew his gun, sprinted after the truck, and fired two shots at its rear tires. The truck swerved out of the loading area. Before it reached the port exit, a row of headlights fla

I barely slept my first night back at the farm. I kept dreaming I was being hunted down and shot.Early the next morning, Carlo Ricci, one of Isabella's men, arrived. He brought me a plane ticket to France. Everything was already arranged—a place to stay and someone to meet me when I arrived. All that was left was for me to leave Sicily.Soon afterward, Enzo Galli, Lorenzo's right-hand man, arrived with another set of papers and a ticket for a boat leaving that night. The two men usually couldn't stand each other, but for once, they agreed: I should leave immediately.I considered it, then pushed both envelopes back across the table. "I'm not leaving."Carlo tried to change my mind, but I was already on my feet and heading out to the yard. The broken gate still leaned against the wall. The upstairs windows still hadn't been fixed, and the wine cellar was still a mess after the search. This was the home my adoptive parents had left me, the place I'd lived for more than 20 years. Then it

At those words, the shouting in the hall died down for a moment. If someone else had known the meeting place in advance, then they hadn't actually identified the person behind the leak. But the man with the gun wasn't listening. His son had died in the ambush, and he was convinced I was the one who killed him. He suddenly broke free from the men holding him and lunged at me again. The chain was still locked around my waist, and the crowd had closed in behind me. There was nowhere to dodge. He had barely raised his gun when Isabella fired. The bullet struck his leg. He screamed and dropped to his knees as his gun skidded away. The other side of the hall erupted.Several Moretti men drew their guns, and the Vincenti men rose too. The two sides faced off across the long table, and the tension in the room spiked. The wounded man clutched his leg and called out to Lorenzo, "Don!"Every eye turned to Lorenzo.Everyone expected Lorenzo, a man known for protecting his own, to demand justice fo

While I was trying to find evidence and clear my name, Matteo's fiancée, Elena Ferri, came to the farm and set his phone in front of me."We only got his things back yesterday. When I was going through his phone, I found a voice message he never sent."She opened Matteo's chat with Luca. The final message was a voice note marked "failed to send," timestamped the night before the address leaked.I played the voice note again. "Sofia came by for the new address. She said you told her to pick it up. But you told me yourself she wasn't involved in any of this. Something's not right. You should look into it when you get back."So Sofia had entered the records room and taken the new address the night before the leak, without Luca's knowledge.I had barely saved the recording when Joint Council officers arrived to take me in for more questioning.I played the recording for them immediately. Then Luca and Sofia arrived. The moment Sofia heard the voice message, her expression changed. The coun
