Chapter 2

Author: Seeky
"All right, baby! I know you want to see me."

Matteo smiled as he answered her, completely ignoring me.

"I need to get the wedding to Elena over with first. Everyone from both Families is waiting at the church."

Then he finally hung up.

He turned to me and asked, "We left early this morning. There's a place on the way to the church that sells the lemon cake you like. Want me to stop and get you a slice?"

I thought I had misheard.

Minutes earlier, he had been joking with Ilaria about my miscarriage and my marriage.

Now he was acting like nothing had happened, casually asking if I wanted cake.

"How can you act like nothing happened?"

My hands were still shaking.

"You slept with her last night and now you expect to marry me today? Matteo, you swore on your honor that you'd never hurt me the way Luca did!"

When the tears came, I did not wipe them away.

Matteo used to reach for a tissue before my tears even fell. He would tell me that no matter what happened, he would fix it.

This time, he only looked at me.

"If you'd chosen me when our Families first proposed the marriage, maybe none of this would have happened.

"You gave Luca the best years of your life. You only came back to me after he betrayed you and cast you aside.

"Why should I still treat you like you're the love of my life? Don't be so naive, Elena!"

Matteo picked up the box of tissues and set it on my lap.

"Elena, you can't have it both ways."

That was when I realized he'd only made me look like an even bigger fool.

We met through our Families' business. Years ago, when our Families first proposed a marriage between us, both Rossi brothers told me they loved me. I chose Luca, the warm, outgoing one.

Matteo came to our wedding. Afterward, we made sure to keep our distance.

That changed after Luca cheated, I lost the baby, and I fell into severe depression.

Matteo found me a doctor and removed anything from the house I could use to hurt myself.

He drove me to every appointment and back.

When my Family ran into trouble, he stepped up and helped my parents through one crisis after another.

So, I let myself believe he truly loved me.

"If you resented me for choosing Luca, why did you pursue me at all? Why spend three years making me believe you would never hurt me?"

Matteo was silent for a few seconds.

"Because I thought I could get over it. Then we started planning the wedding.

"You remembered every detail from your first wedding. Every clause in the contract. Every part of the ceremony. Even the seating arrangements. You knew exactly what we needed to bring today without checking once.

"Every time you handled something without even thinking about it, all I could think was that you'd done this with Luca before. I love you, Elena. But I can't pretend your past doesn't bother me."

His voice grew more agitated with every word.

"Give me a year. Just one year to do whatever I want. I decide who I sleep with and how I live. When the year is over, I'll cut every other woman off. Then you'll be my Donna. After everything I went through because of you, that's only fair."

Tears blurred my vision. One landed on the back of Matteo's hand.

"That is not fair!

"You had every right to have a problem with my past. You could have told me before we signed the marriage contract! But you don't get to spend three years protecting me, wait until I'm finally ready to marry again, then cheat on me and call it your right!"

I took off the wedding ring and set it on the armrest.

My chest hurt so much I could barely breathe.

"Matteo, I'm not marrying you!"

His eyes dropped to the ring, and his face went cold.

"The priest and both Families are waiting at the church. You don't get to call off this wedding by yourself.

"You want to call off the wedding? Not happening. If you don't want to be my Donna, then you can be my lover. Either way, Elena, you're mine. You're not leaving me."

I stared at him and refused to back down.

Matteo's face darkened. He signaled for the car to pull over.

He unlocked the door and unbuckled my seat belt.

He shoved the door open and pushed me out.

"I'll tell everyone the wedding's postponed. Then I'm going to see Ilaria. You can decide whether you want to be my Donna or my lover. Those are your only choices."

Elena's POV:Matteo did not catch me.He missed me by mere seconds. I had just gotten into the car when he came running out after me.He chased my car for as long as he could, finally stopping when his legs gave out.He called me over and over. I did not answer. He had already signed the divorce papers, and the divorce had been finalized the day before.I told him we would register our marriage again after the wedding that day, and he was foolish enough to believe me.I had fooled him, but I felt no satisfaction.Lying on the operating table with my mind set on dying, I heard my therapist urging me to hold on.In our earlier sessions, she had noticed how heavily I depended on Matteo. She had tried to warn me gently, but I had not listened.Only on that operating table did her words finally mean something different to me.In that moment, I didn't want to survive for the sake of living. I wanted to survive because only then could I take revenge. That desire for revenge kept me alive. The

While preparations for the coronation continued, Elena used her ongoing recovery as an excuse to sleep in a separate room from Matteo. Then one day, she approached him while he was working with a bright smile."Honey, I think I've remembered something."Matteo froze, his expression unreadable."I remember a cross-shaped scar on your shoulder from when you took a knife for me. Will you let me see it?"The words hit him like a bucket of ice water. He knew that scar. It was proof that Luca had once beaten him in a fight. What she had remembered was Luca, not him. When Matteo remained silent, suspicion crept across Elena's face."You don't have it? Did I remember it wrong? But I'm sure my husband had that scar. Or are you not my husband at all?""Of course I have it. I just happened to injure that shoulder a few days ago. Wait here. I'll clean the wound and show you."With that, Matteo went into the bathroom and used a dagger to slash his shoulder until it was covered in blood. Only then d

Elena was never going to accept a ruined ring. For some reason, Elena had become moody and unpredictable since losing her memory. She threw anything she could get her hands on at him and screamed and cried hysterically."You let the ring get ruined like this! You don't love me at all. I want a divorce!"At the word "divorce," Matteo panicked. He immediately promised, "Don't cry, Elena. It's all my fault. I'll have it repaired, and once it's fixed, I'll keep it safe. I swear. Please trust me, okay?"At last, after Matteo apologized over and over and signed an agreement giving her three of the Family's core cross-border shipping routes, Elena grudgingly stopped crying. On the day she was discharged, she refused to get into his car."It's windy out here. Sweetheart, get in the car." Matteo tried to coax her, forcing a smile.Elena gave him a cold look. "This car reeks of cheap perfume. It makes me sick."Matteo's face stiffened. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and he swallowed hard. Complet

Five days after the surgery, Elena slowly opened her eyes in the hospital.Matteo, who had not slept in days, rushed to her bedside, his voice shaking. "Elena, you're awake! Are you in pain?"Elena paused for a moment. Under the blanket, her fingers quietly curled into a fist. She stayed silent for a while, then slowly shook her head and asked curiously, "Who are you?"Matteo froze, but then a flicker of joy stirred inside him.During the days he had spent beside her, he had rehearsed his apology and explanation countless times and prepared himself to win her heart all over again. He had never expected her to forget everything.Maybe this was his chance to start over.Matteo struggled to hide his excitement."I'm your husband. We registered our marriage last week. Our wedding is scheduled for the end of this month."He paused."But a few days ago, you were looking at the stars and accidentally fell from an upper floor. You've just had surgery. We'll hold the wedding once you've recover

That thought set his jealousy ablaze. After that, everything Elena did irritated him. Every little thing she said or reminded him about felt like another provocation. The more he loved her, the more it hurt, and the more it hurt, the more he loved her.Worse, Ilaria kept feeding his jealousy with stories about Elena and Luca, reminding him how much Elena had once depended on Luca."Matteo, do you really think it's fair? You loved her all that time, and she only chose you after she lost Luca. If I were you, I'd make her pay for that."Ilaria stripped in front of him and offered herself to him.Driven by jealousy toward a rival who existed only in his mind, Matteo made the ridiculous decision to sleep with her. When he returned to the villa and saw Elena sleeping peacefully, breathing in the calming aroma he'd prepared for her, his jealousy only grew worse. Why should he be tortured by jealousy while Elena slept so peacefully? So, on the day they registered their marriage, he told her th

Matteo raced toward the hospital with Elena bleeding beside him.As he drove, memories of their time together flooded his mind.He had first seen Elena in the middle of an assassination attempt against the Family. He only knew that he'd fallen for her the moment he saw her. So he pursued her.By the time he learned the truth, Elena had already chosen Luca. The day he heard they were getting married, Matteo cried all night. On the wedding day, he followed their car the entire way. When Luca finally kissed her, Matteo looked away, his eyes red. That night, he drank until he could barely stand. Even then, he prayed Luca wouldn't appreciate her, so he might still have a chance. Then Luca cheated. Elena lost their baby. And Matteo got the chance he'd once wished for.
