Chapter 2

Author: E. L. Knox
"Everyone." My voice carried through the speakers across the entire ballroom.

The room fell silent.

"I'm very sorry to announce that tonight's engagement ceremony is canceled."

There was dead silence before chaos erupted.

"What?"

"Canceled?"

"What happened?"

I continued in a steady voice, "Marcus just left to pick up his ex-girlfriend, Lily, from the airport. So I've decided to call off our engagement."

The murmurs grew louder.

"Ex-girlfriend?"

"During the engagement party?"

"Is he insane?"

"Thank you all for coming tonight. Please enjoy the dinner and drinks."

I handed the microphone back to the stunned DJ and walked off the stage through the uproar.

I leaned against the elevator wall, staring at my reflection in the metal doors. I was wearing a black Valentino cocktail dress, Cartier diamond earrings, and a ten-carat engagement ring on my left ring finger.

With a bitter, self-mocking smile, I slipped the ring off and dropped it into my clutch. I pushed through the hotel's revolving doors. The cool night air hit my face, and a chill spread through my chest.

The valet recognized me, his eyes flickering. "Ms. White, do you need your car?"

"No, I'll walk."

I walked two blocks before stopping. Leaning against a building's wall, I finally pulled out my phone.

There were 22 missed calls, from my mom, Diana, a few friends, and Marcus. He'd sent five texts.

"Claire, I'm at the airport."

"Lily's in bad shape. The doctor says she needs to be hospitalized for observation."

"I'll be back as soon as I can."

"We'll talk properly when I get back."

"Claire, call me back."

I turned off my phone, suddenly feeling both ridiculous and pathetic.

The next morning, a phone call woke me up. It was my assistant, Emily Johnson.

"Claire, have you seen the news?" Her voice was urgent.

I rubbed my eyes and opened my phone.

The highlight "Claire White Calls Off Engagement" was already trending.

I clicked on it, and videos and photos from last night flooded the screen. There were pictures of my expression on stage, Marcus's retreating figure, and one blurry photo of Marcus at the airport, holding Lily Bardot.

The comments kept multiplying.

"Did you see that airport photo? He's holding her so tight!"

"So he really abandoned his fiancee for his ex?"

"Claire did the right thing. You can't keep a man like that!"

There were people criticizing me too.

"Isn't that too impulsive? He went to help someone, and she just flipped out?"

"I think Claire's quite calculating. She deliberately made a scene in public."

"Claire?" Emily was still on the line. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I said. "What's on the schedule today?"

"There's a video conference at 10:00 am." She paused. "And Marcus wants to see you."

I frowned. "Tell him I'm busy."

"I did," Emily said. "But he said Ms. Bardot wants to apologize to you in person."

I laughed coldly. "Apologize?"

"They're downstairs right now. They've been waiting for an hour."

I glanced at the time. It was only 9:00 am. "Send them to the conference room."

Marcus looked terrible. His eyes were bloodshot, stubble covered his jaw, and his suit was wrinkled. He clearly hadn't slept.

Lily sat beside him. She wore a beige dress, her hair falling softly over her shoulders. Her face was pale, and her eyes were red and swollen. She looked fragile and pitiful.

"Claire." Marcus stood up the moment he saw me. "We need to talk."

I sat down across from them. "You have ten minutes."

"Last night was a misunderstanding, Claire. Lily really did collapse. The doctor said her blood pressure was dangerously low and her pulse was unstable. If I hadn't gone..."

"Marcus," Lily interrupted weakly, her voice soft. "Stop. This is all my fault."

She turned to me, tears pooling in her eyes. "Ms. White, I'm so sorry. I had no idea last night was your engagement party. If I'd known, I never would have called Marcus."

Her voice trembled. "I suddenly felt sick at the airport. I was dizzy and couldn't breathe. I didn't know who else to call.

"Marcus is the only person I know in this city. I really didn't mean to cause trouble."

Tears streamed down her cheeks. Marcus immediately handed her a tissue. "Lily, don't get worked up. The doctor said you need to rest."

"No." Lily shook her head, tears flowing freely.

"I need to apologize to Ms. White. This is all my fault. If I hadn't called, Marcus wouldn't have left, and you two wouldn't have..."

She couldn't even finish and buried her face in her hands as she sobbed.

Lily's face went completely white. She looked at Marcus, then at me, suddenly realizing everything was over. Her expression shifted from panic to despair, finally twisting into something manic."Fine!" She stood up, her voice hoarse and frantic. "Since it's all out in the open, I'm done pretending! Yes, I lied to you! I only got close to you for the money!"She pointed at me. "Claire, you think you're so noble? You just got lucky latching onto Ethan. Without him, what are you? Just another pathetic woman who got dumped!"At least I'm honest about wanting money. What about you? You're still pretending to be so devoted and hurt. It's disgusting!"She laughed hysterically. "Marcus, stop pretending too! You were only interested in Claire because of her investment banking connections. You think you loved her? You only loved what she could bring you."You people are all hypocrites!"Marcus stood frozen, his face ashen.…Three months later, I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling

The next afternoon, Marcus appeared at the law office looking haggard. Lily held his arm, completely different from her previous fragile act.She wore designer clothes, her hair was professionally styled, and her makeup was flawless. More importantly, her eyes held a superior look, gleaming with triumph. When she saw me, a mocking smile curved at the corners of her mouth."Well, Claire, long time no see." Her voice dripped with sarcasm."I heard you've been doing well?" She looked me over."Latching onto Ethan Roberts must feel pretty great. But…"She leaned in closer, lowering her voice. "You know what? Marcus still chose me. Even when he had to marry someone else, he kept me by his side."And you?" She laughed. "You were so proud back then, but didn't you still get dumped?"Marcus tugged at her sleeve. "Lily...""What?" Lily shook off his hand. "Am I wrong?"She looked at me again, her eyes full of challenge. "Claire, you called us here. Don't tell me you want Marcus back?

A month later, Marcus's wedding took place as scheduled. The bride was Annie, the senator's only daughter. Beautiful, elegant, and well-educated.The wedding was held at the most luxurious church in the city center. The guests were all high society elites.I received an invitation but didn't go. Ethan stayed home with me, and we watched the live broadcast on TV."Do you regret it?" he asked."No. I just feel sad.""For him?""For Annie," I said. "She has no idea what kind of man she's marrying."Ethan squeezed my hand but said nothing. On TV, Marcus and Annie exchanged rings and kissed. Everything looked perfect, but I knew it was just superficial.Sure enough, something happened on their wedding night. That night, Annie waited for her husband in carefully chosen lingerie. But Marcus just said coldly, "I'm heading out for a bit. You should sleep.""Where are you going?" Annie froze."To handle something.""But tonight is our wedding night.""I know, but it's important,"

Three days later, I received the private investigator's report on Lily. The more I read, the worse my expression became.Meanwhile, the Harrison family was in trouble. After the public opinion storm, the Harrison family business plummeted. Diana was so upset that she ended up hospitalized."Marcus," she said weakly, "I reached out to the Rollins family.""The Rollins family?" Marcus paused."Yes, the senator's family," Diana said. "They have a daughter, Annie. She's 26 years old and graduated from a prestigious university."She's gentle and virtuous. Most importantly, their political influence can help us get through this crisis.""Mom, you want me to..." Marcus's expression changed."Marry her," Diana said bluntly. "It's our only way out. The Rollins family is willing to help us, but the condition is a marriage alliance.""Mom, I don't agree," Marcus said. "The only one in my heart is Claire.""Marcus, wake up!" Diana's voice suddenly turned harsh. "Claire is already with Eth

After the article was published, it sparked a huge reaction. In just two hours, it was shared over 10,000 times.More importantly, the comments section shifted."After reading this article, I take back what I said before. Claire isn't a gold digger. She's exceptional on her own.""This is what true female independence looks like! Not depending on anyone!""Marcus must have been blind to let go of a woman like this."Soon after, my clients and business partners started speaking up on social media.John York posted a tweet. "It's an honor to work with Claire. She's the most professional investment advisor I've ever met—a true visionary. For those questioning her abilities, I suggest you look at her track record first."Another client, the CEO of a tech company, posted an image of the financing plan I created for them. It showed how I helped them successfully raise 50 million dollars. The caption read, "Claire helped us through our most difficult period. Without her, we wouldn't b

Walking out of the boutique, I couldn't help but laugh. "You were ruthless just now.""Not ruthless enough," Ethan said. "She thinks all men are as easy to fool as Marcus."I suddenly asked, "What do you think she'll do next?""Come after you," Ethan said without hesitation. "Women like that can't stand being ignored."He was right.A week later, I was in my office handling documents when Emily suddenly knocked and came in, her expression troubled."Claire, you should probably see this." She handed me a tablet. On the screen was a trending post on a popular gossip forum. "Exposing a Certain Investment Banker's Rise to the Top."The post contained paparazzi photos of Ethan and me on dates, old pictures of Marcus and me together, and a flood of so-called revelations."This woman came from an ordinary family and used Marcus to climb into high society."Marcus treated her so well, but she broke up with him over something trivial and immediately latched onto the wealthier Ethan Ro
