Chapter 2

Author: Kitty Purr
When Sophie regained consciousness, she found herself tied up in the back seat of a car. The air inside was suffocating, and the cramped space around her felt like a prison.

The drug still hadn't worn off, leaving her too weak to fight back. Her arms had been twisted behind her, and the ropes binding her wrists dug into her skin like tiny saw blades.

"Please, just let me go! You're going to regret this!" Sophie begged.

Turning toward Yale in the driver's seat, she pleaded, "I'll give you anything you want. Please, Yale, just let me go. We used to be a couple. Doesn't that mean anything to you? I'm begging you. You'll regret it!"

There was no trace of the affection Yale had once shown her. His expression was cold and resolute, his eyes as empty and unforgiving as a bottomless pit of ice.

"Regret it?" Yvette scoffed, turning around with a smug, malicious smile. "Have you lost your mind? What could we possibly regret? Once you're dead, everything your family owns will belong to Yale, and the two of us can finally run away together!"

Her smile widened.

"And you? You can rot in that hellhole until you're a disgusting, half-dead wreck. There won't be a shred of humanity left in you!"

Sophie sighed and curled up in the back seat.

The farther they drove, the more familiar the scenery outside became. Despair washed over her in relentless waves as painful memories came flooding back.

The man who haunted those memories was a demon straight from the depths of hell.

His hands were stained with the blood of countless victims, every death another testament to his cruelty. Killing came as naturally to him as breathing, and innocent lives meant no more to him than insects.

Sophie had spent five years by his side. Throughout that time, his eyes had remained as cold as ever, utterly devoid of feeling despite all the death he had witnessed.

Every fireworks display in northern Manchernius had been paid for with human lives. Behind the dazzling bursts of color lay countless deaths, shattered families, and endless grief.

Whenever the fireworks lit up the sky, Gavin Lawson would hold Sophie in his arms and admire his handiwork with her.

Even now, she could hear his voice in her head, whispering like a demon.

"Soph, don't ever be like those foolish little 'piglets' who don't know what's good for them."

"You're such a delicate little thing. It would break my heart if you got hurt."

"Be good, Soph. A girl doesn't look pretty when she's all bruised and battered."

Curled up in the back seat, Sophie looked at the two people in front who were planning to sell her and couldn't help worrying about what would happen to them.

If Gavin found out how they'd treated her, would they end up being thrown to the dogs like Sam?

"Please, let me go," she tried again. "The man who runs that compound is my childhood friend. If you take me there tied up like this, he'll kill you!"

Neither of them believed a word.

Yvette looked Sophie up and down before rolling her eyes in disgust.

"Are you insane? You expect us to believe such a ridiculous lie? The compound boss is your childhood friend? Well, I might as well tell you he's my distant cousin!"

"You're just an orphan. What childhood friend could you possibly have?" Yale added. "If you really grew up with the guy, why hasn't he come looking for you? You're obviously scared out of your mind and making things up."

Seeing that neither of them would listen to reason, Sophie wisely kept her mouth shut.

There was no saving people who were determined to get themselves killed.

In the corner of the narcotics unit office, a baby's cradle now stood where the weapons rack used to be.Three-month-old Nestor lay inside it, his wide clear eyes fixed on the police-badge mobile spinning overhead. The captain awkwardly held a bottle for him while the deputy captain stood nearby, nervously taking notes."Thirty milliliters... temperature thirty-six point eight..."When an alarm suddenly went off, both men lunged at the same time to cover Nestor's ears.A policewoman hurried in with a newly knitted sweater."Try this on him. Does it fit?"A mango branch was stitched across the front. The head of the tech team adjusted the surveillance angle to keep the cradle centered on the monitor."This little guy's going to make a great spotter one day. Look at the way he watches the cameras."Nestor suddenly let out a babbling little sound, and the whole office fell quiet. Everyone held their breath, watching him wave his tiny hands in the air. Only after he yawned and drifted back

In a daze, Sophie felt herself slipping back to a summer afternoon beneath the mango tree when they were eighteen. Gavin was clumsily wiping ice cream from the corner of her mouth."Slow down. It's melting all over your hands."When his fingers brushed her skin, they both blushed."Soph..." His final whisper was as faint as a feather brushing against her skin. "I'm... cold..."She suddenly remembered the night he'd taken off his school uniform jacket and wrapped it around her."Can't have my Sophie getting cold."Now, at last, his bloodstained suit jacket was wrapped around him instead.Sophie gripped the bloody dagger tightly, her eyes hollow but filled with grim resolve. The undercover officer realized what she was about to do and sprinted toward her, shouting, "Don't!"Yet everything seemed to move in slow motion.A faint, bitter smile touched Sophie's lips, filled with a strange sense of release. Slowly, she raised the dagger, then drove it into her own chest without hesitation. He

Sophie struggled free of Gavin's arms, her voice cold as ice."Not the monster you became, crawling out of the drug trade."As the police slowly tightened their perimeter, Gavin gave a quiet, disbelieving laugh."So sleeping with me... making me happy... Was all of that fake?""Every second of it." Sophie looked straight into his bloodshot eyes. "All I could think about was how to send you straight to hell."Gavin seized her wrist, refusing to let go."You're lying to me, aren't you?"Sophie coldly pulled her hand free."I haven't sunk so low that I'd fall in love with a drug lord."He staggered and dropped to his knees."But you told me you loved me...""I lied. I faked my death and escaped so I could gather evidence against you." She looked down at him without a trace of warmth. "I just never expected someone would sell me right back into your hands."Gavin suddenly threw back his head and let out an anguished roar."And our baby? Was he part of your plan too?""You kept me locked up

"We're almost there..."Gavin was breathing heavily as he adjusted Sophie's weight on his back, trying to keep her from slipping. Blood and sweat dripped from his body into the stagnant water flooding the tunnel.Sophie stared at the wound on the back of his neck, where flying debris had torn through his skin."Gavin... Do you regret it?"He paused for a moment before giving a quiet laugh that rumbled through his chest."I regret not taking you away sooner..."He turned his head, wanting to kiss her, but stopped when he remembered the blood and dirt covering his face."Sorry. I'm filthy."The tracking device was growing warm in Sophie's palm.By now, the police should have surrounded the entire area. They could move in at any moment. She instinctively tightened her arms around his neck, and the gesture delighted Gavin enough that he slowed his pace."That's my girl. We'll be able to rest soon.""What about the baby?" Sophie asked weakly.Gavin shifted her higher on his back, struggling

The day Sophie went into labor, police forces suddenly surrounded the compound.Gunfire was closing in on the delivery wing when a bloodied guard stumbled into the corridor."Mr. Lawson! The cops are about to break through our last line of defense! We have to get out of here!"Gavin kicked him aside."Get the fuck out of my way!"Bracing himself against the delivery room door, he roared at his bloodied men, "Listen up! I don't care what it takes. You hold this hallway!"He grabbed his radio and began barking orders."Team A, hold the stairs! Team B, seal off the elevators! Team C, pin every last one of those bastards down in the hallway!"Snatching a shotgun from one of his men, he shoved it into a trembling guard's hands."You! Cover the left side! If even one person gets through, I'll chop up your entire family and feed them to the dogs!"He seized the guard by the hair and slammed his head against the wall."Am I fucking clear?"Then he kicked open a ventilation shaft and fired seve

Gavin looked down at the can of cat food and gave a cold laugh."You'd better be telling the truth."Then he seized Margaret's hand, examining the calloused fingers she'd used to massage Sophie."Where did you get these calluses?""I've been delivering babies... for over forty years..." Margaret held out her trembling hands. "I've helped with more than a hundred difficult births..."Gavin shoved her away and was about to order his men to drag her out when a guard came rushing in."Mr. Lawson! Miss Ward's back is hurting so badly she can't sleep!"Gavin immediately turned toward him. "Have you called a doctor?""Y-yes, but she's still in terrible pain..."By the time Gavin reached Sophie's room, a new massage therapist was working on her. The woman's technique was clearly inexperienced, and Sophie kept wincing in discomfort.Gavin impatiently waved her away and knelt beside the bed to massage Sophie's lower back himself."Does it still hurt?"Sophie bit her lip and nodded, cold sweat da
