Chapter 2

Author: Pigmy Bean
The teasing remark sent the already noisy private room into an uproar, and countless eyes turned toward me.

I glanced at Gillian instinctively, but she didn't even look at me. Instead, she was staring at Jude as if begging him for help.

My chest clenched. My lashes fluttered as I looked away in embarrassment.

How could I have forgotten? Gillian had married Jude, not me.

Seeing how excited everyone was, I killed the mood in an instant. "Why look at me? I'm not the groom. Jude is."

A heavy silence fell over the room. Everyone knew what was going on between Gillian and Jude.

Gillian's expression darkened. "Thomas, why would you say that? I already told you. Jude and I are just trying this out for you. He's my brother. Are you seriously getting jealous of him?"

There was nothing but annoyance in her eyes, as if I were the one making a scene for no reason. But after all these years, was I really the one being unreasonable?

She always said Jude was just her brother, so sleeping in the same bed with him even as adults was apparently nothing unusual.

She would hold his hand in public, let people mistake them for a couple, and never even bother to correct them. That was fine, too. So was giving him her engagement ring, wearing her wedding dress for him, and marrying him.

What was left that wasn't okay then?

Was it wrong for me to hold a grudge? Was it wrong to feel hurt or angry? Obviously, I wasn't even allowed to tell the truth anymore. How ridiculous.

My eyes stung, so I quickly turned away, blinking back the tears.

I was about to say something when Jude spoke up, "Gill, I was only trying to help. I didn't mean to upset Thomas."

He kept his eyes down, a strained smile on his face. "I really didn't mean anything by it. I just didn't want you to regret it later. If Thomas isn't comfortable with it, we can just get a—"

"No, Jude," Gillian immediately cut him off. "You didn't do anything wrong. We agreed to do it for three days, so three days it is."

She sighed and looked at me. "Thomas, you agreed to let my brother try this for you. So why are you taking shots at him now? Show him some respect and apologize. Then, we can put this behind us."

She made it sound like I was doing myself a favor by letting me apologize to Jude. I couldn't help but laugh. This wasn't the first time she'd expected me to back down.

In the past, I would have argued with her for hours to make her understand that I deserved to be defended too.

Every time, she'd end up hugging me, crying with guilt, promising she'd never take Jude's side again. But every time, she broke that promise all the same.

After eight years of arguing over this, I didn't want to do it anymore.

I pressed my lips together, took a deep breath, and stood up. "Fine. I was wrong."

I was wrong for not seeing sooner how much she favored Jude. I was wrong for believing, time and time again, that she would change.

Fortunately, I'd come to my senses before it was too late.

Gillian froze. She'd gotten the apology she'd asked for, but for some reason, it left a bad taste in her mouth.

While she was still standing there, dazed, I grabbed my phone and headed for the door. She quickly snapped out of it and tried to follow, but Jude caught her by the wrist. "Gillian, everyone's waiting for…"

I didn't catch the rest of what he said. When I turned around, I saw him cup the back of Gillian's head and pull her close. She didn't push him away.

My hand froze in my pocket. A sudden ringing filled my ears, and for a moment, my mind went blank.

A hollow ache had settled in my chest, making it hard to breathe.

Gillian suddenly stepped back. The confusion in her eyes vanished the instant she saw me. She rushed over.

"Thomas…"

I stepped back, dodging her hand. Just hearing her voice made my stomach turn. I tossed a bank card onto the table, cutting her off before she could say anything. "Consider this a wedding gift for you and Jude."

The card contained the money Gillian had set aside for our wedding. Now, I was returning it to her, untouched.

Without waiting for a response, I walked out of the room like I couldn't wait to get away. The moment I stepped outside, tears spilled over.

Behind me, frantic footsteps came rushing down the hall. "Thomas Sawyer!"

I unzipped the tent, grabbed the hand reaching in, and pulled myself up before taking off.The sound of our footsteps drew the wolves back. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of us.Ivy's hand tightened around mine, and her pace quickened."Don't be afraid. Just stay with me," she said.I nodded, speeding up as I pulled her along with me. Then, I stumbled over a rock and fell. Just as I tried to get back up, a wolf lunged at me.Ivy pulled me forward just in time. She climbed the tree and shouted for me to hurry up. But more and more pairs of green eyes closed in around me, and I couldn't find a way up.I backed away carefully. When my hand touched a tree trunk, a flicker of hope rose in my chest.Just as I turned to climb, I heard a rush of air behind me. Before I could turn around, two hands grabbed my ankles."Thomas, climb!" Gillian said.I froze for a second. Then, I stopped thinking and pulled myself up with all my strength. One of the crew members reached

Gillian flinched at my harsh words. Her lips trembled, and there were tears clinging to her lashes."Thomas, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I didn't understand the boundaries between a brother and sister before, but I get it now. Please, just give me one more chance."I've already finished renovating the house," she added, hurriedly pulling out her phone and holding it in front of my face, swiping through photo after photo. "Look, I even have a golden-shaded cat now. I know how much you love them."I didn't even bother looking. I just swatted her hand away. "I don't care. I'm not interested. I don't even like cats anymore."The phone fell to the ground. For a moment, Gillian looked like she could barely breathe, but she forced herself to smile as she crouched down to pick it up."Okay. When you come back, we can—"I impatiently cut her off, "Do you not understand what I'm saying? I'm not going back. And even if I did, I wouldn't get back together with you. So just leave me alone, okay?"

"Mr. Sawyer, let's take a break. We probably won't see the lions today. After the break, we should head back to camp," one of the crew said. I waved him off and kept my eyes fixed on the monitor.I'd been filming this documentary in Bovaca for over a year, and it had been brutal. We barely had any usable footage, and a few crew members had nearly been attacked by animals.A lot of people had quit and headed home because of that. Fewer than 20 of us were still here, which was painfully small for a proper production crew. But none of us gave up. We were determined to see our work through.Just then, a cup of water was held out to me. "Have some water. I'll watch the monitor for you." Her familiar scent made my ears grow warm.I nodded and moved aside to let her take over. When I was about to leave, she caught me by the hem of my shirt. "Thomas, I'm just an amateur. I can't handle this on my own without you."There was a playful note in her crisp voice. I suddenly felt a little

Dr. Olsen explained indifferently, "Don't worry. These are just standard treatments. They won't hurt him. Our facility always prioritizes the patient's well-being."Hearing that, Gillian felt reassured. She reached out and lightly patted Jude's hand, just as she used to."Jude, cooperate with your treatment and get better. I'll come back for you once you're well. I'm still keeping the place we're renting for you. Thomas and I will be moving into our new home after we get married. You don't mind, do you?"Jude would have protested in the past. But now, he wasn't in any position to say no.He nodded repeatedly. "Gill, I don't mind. I can move out. I won't get in the way of you and Thomas. Please take me home with you, okay?"Gillian's expression remained calm. She gently pushed him back. "I'm not saying you can't come home. Don't forget. This is what you promised me."Gillian looked as gentle as she always had, but to Jude, she seemed to have completely lost her mind.He tried to

Jude lunged to kiss Gillian like a madman. When she tried to pull back, he just pressed closer.Gillian had never known he could be that strong. In her eyes, Jude had always been gentle, considerate, and soft-spoken.But now, his breath was hot against her neck. She realized he was completely losing control, so she shoved him away with all her strength."Enough, Jude! I'm your sister!" Her voice was raw and strained, but even that failed to bring Jude back to his senses.Tears streamed down his face, yet the disturbing smile never left his lips."Gillian, don't you find that ridiculous coming from you? We're not related by blood. How can you even call yourself my sister? My sweetheart, maybe?"Drop your act. You have feelings for me too, don't you? Otherwise, why would you let me kiss you? Why would you marry me, give me a ring, show me your wedding dress, and even give me your house with Thomas?"You were the one who led me on. How dare you give me that look of disgust?"Gilli

A loud bang seemed to go off in Gillian's head, leaving her ears ringing.A horrifying realization dawned on her. Without another word, she hung up and called me.Just one day later, instead of the usual ringing followed by voicemail, a cold automated voice cut in. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Gillian's chest tightened. Her eyes went blank as the color drained from her face. She immediately called Leon, but every attempt went straight to voicemail until he blocked her. Her previous messages to me sat unread in our chat.Panic rose inside her. She realized she had lost me.The thought terrified her, and she shook her head violently."Thomas is just angry. He isn't leaving me. The wedding could be rescheduled. If he's upset, I can still make it up to him."Gillian clung to those thoughts, refusing to believe that I would end their eight-year relationship just like that. Then, she noticed a piece of paper on the floor. It had been tucked underneath the dia
