Chapter 4

Autor: Pigmy Bean
Just as I finished speaking, I heard Jude calling from farther down the hall. "Gill, Brenda wants you back inside!"

Gillian immediately turned and headed toward him without thinking.

After taking a few steps, she seemed to remember I was still standing there. She stopped and turned back. "Thomas, what were you saying?"

Before I could answer, she gave a casual smile. "Whatever it was, you can decide. You're going to be the one calling the shots at home anyway."

She took my hand, speaking faster than usual. "I know you're not a fan of these kinds of gatherings. Why don't you head home first? Just text me when you get there so I know you're safe. I won't walk you out, okay?"

She phrased it like a question, but she clearly didn't expect an answer. The moment she finished, she turned and walked away without looking back.

I watched her from behind, my heart sinking with every step.

That half-hearted attempt to soothe me wasn't about me at all. Gillian just wanted to wrap things up as quickly as possible so she could rush back to Jude.

She didn't care about me at all. My words, my safety—none of it mattered. She was just going through the motions, saying the things a good girlfriend was expected to say.

Even if I did text Gillian when I got home, she wouldn't reply. She never checked her phone when she was with Jude.

Fortunately, I was done embarrassing myself. I had said everything I needed to say. Whatever happened next had nothing to do with her anymore.

Neither of them came home that night. Gillian didn't even bother to check in.

Just as I expected, she didn't care whether I got home safely. And as for where the two of them went, I couldn't care less either.

I spent the next day packing up my things and had the non-essentials shipped out. Only then did I realize how little of my stuff actually was in the house.

When Gillian and I rented the place, she gave the master bedroom to Jude right away. He had an entire wall of closet space for his clothes, along with his own high-end gaming setup.

In the room Gillian and I shared, the already cramped closet was packed with her dresses, leaving my clothes neatly folded in a small corner. I had to squeeze my workspace right next to the bed, without even enough room for a chair.

I never thought much of it back then. I just figured Jude was making serious money.

Whenever I mentioned it, Gillian would always brush it off. "He doesn't earn that much. He just likes wasting money on useless stuff. I'll throw it all out one of these days."

Only later did I find out that the expensive suits filling Jude's closet and his six-figure gaming setup had all been gifts from Gillian. She had never put that kind of thought into anything for me.

My eyes suddenly stung when I thought about it. I quickly tilted my head up and blinked away the tears. If something was never meant to be mine, I didn't want it anymore.

After checking that I hadn't left anything behind, I scheduled a courier pickup. Just as the delivery guy took my packages, my phone rang.

"Is this Mr. Sawyer? This is Tim Larson from Briarwood Realty. You asked me to help you find an interior designer, and I…"

As the real estate agent eagerly explained everything, my mind wandered for a moment.

So much had happened lately that I'd completely forgotten about the house. It was still waiting to be renovated.

I had bought it for Gillian and me to live in after the wedding, and we agreed it would be my wedding gift to her.

It was the first time I'd spent that much money without worrying about the cost. I was simply too happy to care.

Now, the more excited I had been when I bought it, the more bitter I felt now. There was no point keeping the house if there was no wedding.

"I'm sorry, but I won't be needing the designer anymore. As for the house… List it for sale instead. I want to sell it as soon as possible," I said.

Tim went quiet. I thought he'd been caught off guard by my request, but then he asked hesitantly, "Mr. Sawyer, is this what the owner wants?"

I was completely confused. Wasn't I the owner?

When I bought the house, I didn't even put Gillian's name on the deed because she insisted we wait until after we were married to combine our assets.

Before I could ask Tim what he meant, I heard him typing on his keyboard.

A moment later, he added, "Mr. Sawyer, the property was transferred to Mr. Jude Chadwick last month. If you want to sell it, we'll need the owner's consent."

I unzipped the tent, grabbed the hand reaching in, and pulled myself up before taking off.The sound of our footsteps drew the wolves back. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of us.Ivy's hand tightened around mine, and her pace quickened."Don't be afraid. Just stay with me," she said.I nodded, speeding up as I pulled her along with me. Then, I stumbled over a rock and fell. Just as I tried to get back up, a wolf lunged at me.Ivy pulled me forward just in time. She climbed the tree and shouted for me to hurry up. But more and more pairs of green eyes closed in around me, and I couldn't find a way up.I backed away carefully. When my hand touched a tree trunk, a flicker of hope rose in my chest.Just as I turned to climb, I heard a rush of air behind me. Before I could turn around, two hands grabbed my ankles."Thomas, climb!" Gillian said.I froze for a second. Then, I stopped thinking and pulled myself up with all my strength. One of the crew members reached

Gillian flinched at my harsh words. Her lips trembled, and there were tears clinging to her lashes."Thomas, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I didn't understand the boundaries between a brother and sister before, but I get it now. Please, just give me one more chance."I've already finished renovating the house," she added, hurriedly pulling out her phone and holding it in front of my face, swiping through photo after photo. "Look, I even have a golden-shaded cat now. I know how much you love them."I didn't even bother looking. I just swatted her hand away. "I don't care. I'm not interested. I don't even like cats anymore."The phone fell to the ground. For a moment, Gillian looked like she could barely breathe, but she forced herself to smile as she crouched down to pick it up."Okay. When you come back, we can—"I impatiently cut her off, "Do you not understand what I'm saying? I'm not going back. And even if I did, I wouldn't get back together with you. So just leave me alone, okay?"

"Mr. Sawyer, let's take a break. We probably won't see the lions today. After the break, we should head back to camp," one of the crew said. I waved him off and kept my eyes fixed on the monitor.I'd been filming this documentary in Bovaca for over a year, and it had been brutal. We barely had any usable footage, and a few crew members had nearly been attacked by animals.A lot of people had quit and headed home because of that. Fewer than 20 of us were still here, which was painfully small for a proper production crew. But none of us gave up. We were determined to see our work through.Just then, a cup of water was held out to me. "Have some water. I'll watch the monitor for you." Her familiar scent made my ears grow warm.I nodded and moved aside to let her take over. When I was about to leave, she caught me by the hem of my shirt. "Thomas, I'm just an amateur. I can't handle this on my own without you."There was a playful note in her crisp voice. I suddenly felt a little

Dr. Olsen explained indifferently, "Don't worry. These are just standard treatments. They won't hurt him. Our facility always prioritizes the patient's well-being."Hearing that, Gillian felt reassured. She reached out and lightly patted Jude's hand, just as she used to."Jude, cooperate with your treatment and get better. I'll come back for you once you're well. I'm still keeping the place we're renting for you. Thomas and I will be moving into our new home after we get married. You don't mind, do you?"Jude would have protested in the past. But now, he wasn't in any position to say no.He nodded repeatedly. "Gill, I don't mind. I can move out. I won't get in the way of you and Thomas. Please take me home with you, okay?"Gillian's expression remained calm. She gently pushed him back. "I'm not saying you can't come home. Don't forget. This is what you promised me."Gillian looked as gentle as she always had, but to Jude, she seemed to have completely lost her mind.He tried to

Jude lunged to kiss Gillian like a madman. When she tried to pull back, he just pressed closer.Gillian had never known he could be that strong. In her eyes, Jude had always been gentle, considerate, and soft-spoken.But now, his breath was hot against her neck. She realized he was completely losing control, so she shoved him away with all her strength."Enough, Jude! I'm your sister!" Her voice was raw and strained, but even that failed to bring Jude back to his senses.Tears streamed down his face, yet the disturbing smile never left his lips."Gillian, don't you find that ridiculous coming from you? We're not related by blood. How can you even call yourself my sister? My sweetheart, maybe?"Drop your act. You have feelings for me too, don't you? Otherwise, why would you let me kiss you? Why would you marry me, give me a ring, show me your wedding dress, and even give me your house with Thomas?"You were the one who led me on. How dare you give me that look of disgust?"Gilli

A loud bang seemed to go off in Gillian's head, leaving her ears ringing.A horrifying realization dawned on her. Without another word, she hung up and called me.Just one day later, instead of the usual ringing followed by voicemail, a cold automated voice cut in. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Gillian's chest tightened. Her eyes went blank as the color drained from her face. She immediately called Leon, but every attempt went straight to voicemail until he blocked her. Her previous messages to me sat unread in our chat.Panic rose inside her. She realized she had lost me.The thought terrified her, and she shook her head violently."Thomas is just angry. He isn't leaving me. The wedding could be rescheduled. If he's upset, I can still make it up to him."Gillian clung to those thoughts, refusing to believe that I would end their eight-year relationship just like that. Then, she noticed a piece of paper on the floor. It had been tucked underneath the dia
