Chapter 5

Autor: Pigmy Bean
Tim's words left me speechless. For a moment, I wondered if this was some kind of scam.

I had personally picked up the deed from the county clerk's office when I bought the house. How could Jude possibly be the owner?

Tim seemed to realize I didn't believe him. With an awkward laugh, he sent me a digital copy of the transfer agreement through WhatsApp.

I opened the file. There was so much fine print that my eyes started to blur, but one thing immediately caught my attention—the signature.

I froze. I searched my memory, but I couldn't remember ever signing anything like this. Then, I saw the date on the agreement, and suddenly, everything came rushing back.

It was the day before Jude's birthday. Gillian had suddenly handed me a stack of papers. "Thomas, I need you to sign this. Don't forget."

I was busy editing a video, so I didn't read them carefully. I just assumed that it was the purchase agreement for the new car she wanted.

Since I'd promised to buy it for her, I signed the papers without a second thought. I never imagined that the trust I'd placed in her would be repaid with such a betrayal.

The next day was Jude's birthday. Given how devoted Gillian was to her brother, I was surprised she hadn't prepared anything for him.

When I asked her about it, she just replied, "I've already given him a gift. What's yours is mine, and what's mine is yours, right?"

Back then, I thought she was finally being considerate of me and trying to keep her distance from Jude, so I assumed my gift counted as hers, too.

I forgot that Gillian would never change.

In her heart, Jude mattered more than anyone else. When she said she had already given him a gift, she meant she had simply given him something that belonged to me.

I stared blankly at the transfer agreement, feeling as if all the strength had drained out of me.

I had always admired Gillian's way with words at work. I'd never imagined she'd use that same skill to play games with me.

Over the phone, Tim continued explaining exactly what Gillian had done that day, trying to reassure me that he wasn't making it up.

Every word he said felt like a needle piercing my heart. I swallowed hard, forcing down the lump in my throat. "Okay. I understand. I'll get the owner's approval."

After hanging up, I immediately took a cab to Gillian's office.

I ignored the strange looks from her employees and kicked open the door to her office. I didn't expect the first thing I'd see to be the two of them locked in a tight embrace.

Gillian immediately let go of Jude and stepped in front of him, shielding him with her body.

Seeing her instinctively step in to protect him, with that guarded look in her eyes, made my heart ache.

How terrible of a person did she think I was? Just seeing me made her assume that I was there to cause trouble, so she immediately shielded Jude from me.

I gave a cold laugh and looked away. I had no desire to question her about it. I just opened the digital agreement and tossed my phone onto her desk. "Gillian, explain this."

She clearly hadn't expected my reaction. A flicker of surprise crossed her face as she picked up my phone.

The moment she saw the agreement, her expression relaxed. She said nonchalantly, "Is this what you're upset about? He's my brother, and we're the only family he has left. What does it matter whose name is on the house?

"And I talked to you about it back then, didn't I? You signed the papers yourself. Jude's 30th birthday is a big deal, and he's going to get married someday. He needs a place of his own. It's been two months already. Why are you suddenly throwing a fit about it now?"

Gillian looked at me in confusion, just as she had every other time we'd argued over Jude during the past eight years.

She never understood why I was so upset over those "little things" or where all my anger came from. She couldn't even see how blatantly she sided with Jude, let alone how much it hurt me.

My hands clenched tightly at my sides. My fingernails dug into my palms until they drew blood, but I felt no pain.

In Gillian's mind, Jude needed a house because he would get married someday. But had she forgotten that I'd bought that house for us—that it was supposed to be our home after we got married?

I struggled to breathe as I stared at Gillian. The longer I looked at her, the more of a stranger she became.

Things weren't like this in the beginning. Jude was around back then too, but Gillian wasn't like this.

She did think of Jude first in everything. When we went shopping, she'd give him the ice cream first. When it rained, she'd make sure he was under the umbrella first. Whenever her legs got tired, she'd turn to him and act cute.

But back then, she still knew where to draw the line. She'd wait in line with me for our favorite drinks. After handing the umbrella to Jude, she'd slip under mine. And whenever her feet hurt, she'd only climb onto my back.

I don't know when that changed, but somewhere along the way, Jude became the only person who mattered to her.

And because I was younger, I was expected to respect him in everything, even if that meant giving up my girlfriend and my house for him.

I let out a bitter laugh. I didn't want to argue with her about the house anymore. I just wanted to get away from their sick excuse for a sibling relationship.

"Gillian, I'm not throwing a fit. If you think Jude needs a house, then fine. He can have it. I don't want it anymore. Just pay me back what I spent on it. Please wire 1.96 million dollars to my account as soon as possible," I said drily.

I unzipped the tent, grabbed the hand reaching in, and pulled myself up before taking off.The sound of our footsteps drew the wolves back. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of us.Ivy's hand tightened around mine, and her pace quickened."Don't be afraid. Just stay with me," she said.I nodded, speeding up as I pulled her along with me. Then, I stumbled over a rock and fell. Just as I tried to get back up, a wolf lunged at me.Ivy pulled me forward just in time. She climbed the tree and shouted for me to hurry up. But more and more pairs of green eyes closed in around me, and I couldn't find a way up.I backed away carefully. When my hand touched a tree trunk, a flicker of hope rose in my chest.Just as I turned to climb, I heard a rush of air behind me. Before I could turn around, two hands grabbed my ankles."Thomas, climb!" Gillian said.I froze for a second. Then, I stopped thinking and pulled myself up with all my strength. One of the crew members reached

Gillian flinched at my harsh words. Her lips trembled, and there were tears clinging to her lashes."Thomas, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I didn't understand the boundaries between a brother and sister before, but I get it now. Please, just give me one more chance."I've already finished renovating the house," she added, hurriedly pulling out her phone and holding it in front of my face, swiping through photo after photo. "Look, I even have a golden-shaded cat now. I know how much you love them."I didn't even bother looking. I just swatted her hand away. "I don't care. I'm not interested. I don't even like cats anymore."The phone fell to the ground. For a moment, Gillian looked like she could barely breathe, but she forced herself to smile as she crouched down to pick it up."Okay. When you come back, we can—"I impatiently cut her off, "Do you not understand what I'm saying? I'm not going back. And even if I did, I wouldn't get back together with you. So just leave me alone, okay?"

"Mr. Sawyer, let's take a break. We probably won't see the lions today. After the break, we should head back to camp," one of the crew said. I waved him off and kept my eyes fixed on the monitor.I'd been filming this documentary in Bovaca for over a year, and it had been brutal. We barely had any usable footage, and a few crew members had nearly been attacked by animals.A lot of people had quit and headed home because of that. Fewer than 20 of us were still here, which was painfully small for a proper production crew. But none of us gave up. We were determined to see our work through.Just then, a cup of water was held out to me. "Have some water. I'll watch the monitor for you." Her familiar scent made my ears grow warm.I nodded and moved aside to let her take over. When I was about to leave, she caught me by the hem of my shirt. "Thomas, I'm just an amateur. I can't handle this on my own without you."There was a playful note in her crisp voice. I suddenly felt a little

Dr. Olsen explained indifferently, "Don't worry. These are just standard treatments. They won't hurt him. Our facility always prioritizes the patient's well-being."Hearing that, Gillian felt reassured. She reached out and lightly patted Jude's hand, just as she used to."Jude, cooperate with your treatment and get better. I'll come back for you once you're well. I'm still keeping the place we're renting for you. Thomas and I will be moving into our new home after we get married. You don't mind, do you?"Jude would have protested in the past. But now, he wasn't in any position to say no.He nodded repeatedly. "Gill, I don't mind. I can move out. I won't get in the way of you and Thomas. Please take me home with you, okay?"Gillian's expression remained calm. She gently pushed him back. "I'm not saying you can't come home. Don't forget. This is what you promised me."Gillian looked as gentle as she always had, but to Jude, she seemed to have completely lost her mind.He tried to

Jude lunged to kiss Gillian like a madman. When she tried to pull back, he just pressed closer.Gillian had never known he could be that strong. In her eyes, Jude had always been gentle, considerate, and soft-spoken.But now, his breath was hot against her neck. She realized he was completely losing control, so she shoved him away with all her strength."Enough, Jude! I'm your sister!" Her voice was raw and strained, but even that failed to bring Jude back to his senses.Tears streamed down his face, yet the disturbing smile never left his lips."Gillian, don't you find that ridiculous coming from you? We're not related by blood. How can you even call yourself my sister? My sweetheart, maybe?"Drop your act. You have feelings for me too, don't you? Otherwise, why would you let me kiss you? Why would you marry me, give me a ring, show me your wedding dress, and even give me your house with Thomas?"You were the one who led me on. How dare you give me that look of disgust?"Gilli

A loud bang seemed to go off in Gillian's head, leaving her ears ringing.A horrifying realization dawned on her. Without another word, she hung up and called me.Just one day later, instead of the usual ringing followed by voicemail, a cold automated voice cut in. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Gillian's chest tightened. Her eyes went blank as the color drained from her face. She immediately called Leon, but every attempt went straight to voicemail until he blocked her. Her previous messages to me sat unread in our chat.Panic rose inside her. She realized she had lost me.The thought terrified her, and she shook her head violently."Thomas is just angry. He isn't leaving me. The wedding could be rescheduled. If he's upset, I can still make it up to him."Gillian clung to those thoughts, refusing to believe that I would end their eight-year relationship just like that. Then, she noticed a piece of paper on the floor. It had been tucked underneath the dia
