Chapter 3

Author: Eira Winters
Adrian's POV

Just then, Ethan stepped beside her. "Mr. Bennett, please don't take this out on Claire. It's all my fault.

"I shouldn't have come here in the first place. I never should've bothered you two."

Tears filled his eyes as he spoke. "I'll just go."

"Ethan, I told you. I'll take care of everything."

Claire's heart practically broke at the sight of his tears. She gently wiped them away before turning back to me.

Whatever sympathy she'd shown me moments ago was gone. All that remained in her eyes was disgust.

"Adrian, can you please stop clinging to me and just…"

I cut her off. "Fine. We can call off the engagement. Just give me back what's mine."

Claire froze. "What are you talking about?"

I took up the necklace around my neck, which held an antique pendant Claire's mother had given me when our parents arranged our engagement.

Mom had given Claire something far more valuable in return—an antique gold bracelet that had once belonged to royalty and was said to have been blessed by a revered priest centuries ago.

"Here's your pendant. I want my mom's bracelet back."

Claire's expression slowly turned icy as her gaze fell on the pendant in my hand.

I'd worn it every day since I was 15 years old. Everyone knew how much I treasured it.

"Not everyone is as pathetic as you." Claire snatched the pendant out of my hand. "I can't believe you've been wearing this worthless thing around your neck all these years."

She shot me one last cold look. "I'll look for your bracelet when I get home. After that, we're done. For good."

When I got home, my older sister, Vanessa Bennett, was waiting for me in the living room. "Adrian, there's something I need to tell you."

She handed me a few hefty stacks of paperwork. "I'm putting this office building in Ethan's name. That way, he can collect the rent and have a steady income.

"He's been through so much already. Now that he's part of our family, it's time he finally got to enjoy a better life."

I glanced at the paperwork.

The building was part of Mom's estate. It had belonged to her family long before she married Dad, and she'd left it to us when she died.

Without a word, I picked up the documents and tore them in half.

"Adrian!" Vanessa stared at me, clearly displeased.

"What the hell was that for? I already cleaned up the mess you made when you pushed Ethan down the stairs. After everything you've put him through, giving him one building is hardly too much to ask."

"Have you forgotten what Mom said before she died?"

Vanessa fell silent.

On her deathbed, Mom had held Vanessa's hand and refused to let go until she'd made her a promise.

She'd made Vanessa swear to protect me, take care of me, and love me for the rest of her life. She'd made her promise that she'd never let anyone mistreat me or take away anything that rightfully belonged to me.

And Mom had asked me to do the same for Vanessa—to stand up for her and always be someone she could count on.

"I haven't forgotten," Vanessa finally said. "But Adrian, Ethan is also my brother now. Is it really too much to ask that I give him half the love I've always given you?"

She let out a sigh. "Adrian, you're spoiled, entitled, and used to getting your way. Why can't you be more like Ethan?"

Adrian's POVOnce I got back to work, I threw myself into it.After winning such a prestigious award, my salary increased considerably, and my workload grew heavier than before. On my second day back at work, Vanessa moved out of the apartment next door and returned to Jinton. The apartment remained vacant for a while.A year later, a young woman moved in. Her name was Yvette Langdon, and she was a cheerful, outgoing girl who came from the same hometown as me.As I got to know her better, I learned that she worked in the area too. Our companies weren't far apart, and we kept similar working hours, so we often ran into each other.A few months later, she made it clear that she admired me. I thought it over for two days before officially asking her to be my girlfriend. She was easy to get along with, and we had plenty in common. I genuinely enjoyed spending time with her.…Another two years passed. During Thanksgiving, I learned from Vanessa that Karen had passed away the pr

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 23

Adrian's POVI was already back in the country before Mom's death anniversary. On the day of the anniversary, Vanessa was waiting for me in the hotel lobby to take me to the cemetery. We parked outside the cemetery, then walked to Mom's grave together. Vanessa had brought a large bouquet of flowers, as though she were trying to make up for everything she'd missed two years ago.Mom's smile on the headstone was as warm and gentle as ever. The breeze stirred the loose strands of hair across my forehead. Holding my trophy, I chatted with Mom about this and that, telling her everything that had happened.Vanessa stood off to the side, silent throughout. When it was time to leave, I still couldn't stop my eyes from welling up with tears."Adrian," Vanessa began, her eyes red. "Will you never forgive Claire and me, no matter what we do?"I wiped away the tears before they could spill over. "I can forgive you both," I said evenly. "Just don't ever come into my life again."I woul

Adrian's POVAfter that day, Claire stopped showing up, and I relished the peace and quiet. I spent most of my time preparing for the design competition and worked on my design drafts whenever I was free. After the second round, I submitted my design for the semifinals as well.Five days flew by, and I received word that I'd qualified for the finals. To celebrate, I invited Linda and a few of my colleagues over for dinner. While I was preparing food in the kitchen, Vanessa rang the doorbell. The moment I opened the door, she handed me a box. "I bought this from an upscale restaurant," she said. "They're all your favorite dishes—""I've told you before. I don't need any of this," I cut her off. "Stop wasting your time."Vanessa's smile faded. "Adrian, does that mean you will never forgive me, no matter what I do?""I'm moving on," I said. "I hope you can do the same."Vanessa fell silent for a moment before speaking again. "Are you going back next month for Mom's deat

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 21

Adrian's POVWhen Claire's men brought Ethan and his mother to me, I could hardly recognize the woman standing in front of me as Karen. She wore dark clothes and no makeup. Fine lines creased the corners of her eyes, and gray streaked her temples, making her look like she was in her 60s or even her 70s. Ethan looked just as haggard, his youthful energy and vitality long gone. They'd been reduced to this in less than two years. Clearly, they'd been through a great deal.I had to admit, seeing them in such a state gave me a sense of satisfaction. Yet even as I savored that satisfaction, a deep sadness crept in.Claire and Vanessa had once treated Ethan so well. Vanessa had shown Karen such respect, too. Back then, I'd suffered one injustice after another because the two of them always defended Ethan and took his side. Yet after I left, they had quickly turned their anger on him and Karen instead.Their affections and resentments had always been so fickle.I admitted that I loathe

Adrian's POVJust before boarding, something went wrong with my ticket, and I couldn't get on the flight.I wasn't surprised. I knew Claire well enough to know she wouldn't just let me leave without putting up a fight.I told Linda and the other two coworkers to go on without me while I stayed behind to deal with it.I wheeled my suitcase through the terminal, looked around, and spotted Claire almost immediately. There was still a chill in the early spring air. She wore a camel-colored coat, her long, wavy hair falling loosely over her shoulders. With her striking features and curvy figure, she was hard to miss in the crowd. She was watching me expectantly. I beckoned her over with a finger. Her face lit up, and she hurried toward me. "Adrian.""You had something to do with my ticket." It was a statement, not a question.Claire didn't bother denying it. "I did. I couldn't just let you leave."I stared at her coldly. "Do you know why I left? Because you and Vanessa Bennett are

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 19

Adrian's POVI called the police. It had been a long time since I'd last seen Claire. Gone was the confident, lively woman I remembered. Now, she looked completely worn down.I'd figured that once I was out of the picture, she'd be upset for a few days before going back to enjoying her life with Ethan.Apparently, I'd meant more to her than I'd realized. Not that it mattered to me anymore. The police arrived shortly after."This woman keeps insisting I'm someone else, and she won't leave me alone," I explained.I gave them a helpless look and showed them my ID. "My name is Ryan Foster. It always has been.""No, you're Adrian! You're not Ryan or whatever you're calling yourself. We grew up together. I'd know you anywhere!" Even after looking at my ID, Claire refused to believe me."Do you have any proof?" I asked.Claire had no answer.I knew she didn't have a single photo of me. I'd even gone to her mother's house myself to get back all our childhood photos. Before I left, I
