Chapter 2

مؤلف: Noisy Whispers
Everyone was shocked to see my mother suddenly open her eyes. I was stunned as well, but my heart still sank over what was happening, because I knew that this was a sign that my mother was about to die.

I quickly pulled the doctor over to her, "My mother won't make it. Please give her first aid…" Before I could finish, Rina stopped me.

Rina's face fell. "That's enough! Your mother is fine.

"Let's go, Eugene." She turned to leave without looking back again.

I wanted to run after her, but my mother tugged at me with difficulty. A tear fell from the corner of her eye as she stuttered, "Don't hold it against Rina, Micah. It was my fault for not being able to swim a short distance of a few hundred meters.

"Just explain things nicely to her, and don't hurt her, all right? I can pull through. I still want to attend your wedding…"

However, her eyes slowly widened, and her hand fell limply to the ground right after saying this. It did not matter how hysterical I was, calling out to my mother, but she never woke up again. It felt like my heart had stopped beating as I numbly closed my mother's eyes.

Rina and I had been together for three years, and I could not understand how we ended up this way. I still remember how loving we were the first year we were together, but everything changed when her childhood crush returned from overseas.

She kept her distance from me for no reason and would constantly test my love for her. Rina even said that I had to pass 99 tests of true love before I could marry her.

The last time I had to go through one of her tests, she told me to attend a welcome party for Eugene in the middle of the night, but when I got to the door, a full bucket of flour was poured all over me. Eugene was holding the bucket of flour while saying in a pitiful manner, "I poured the flour on you, Micah. You aren't mad at me, are you? I just wanted to make this a fun party for everyone."

Even though I was angry, I did not lose my temper as I spotted Rina watching me thoughtfully. So, I shook my head and told him I was not mad. However, Eugene winked at Rina, and he congratulated me for passing the test. "Not bad. Your boyfriend passed the test. It looks like he has a good temper. That means you don't need to worry about domestic violence."

Rina's expression relaxed, but she did not do anything to comfort me despite the humiliation I faced. All she did was get me to clean myself up in the kitchen indifferently and get me to make supper for everyone with the remaining ingredients.

I could not understand why Rina was adamant about the tests, but I said nothing as I was in love with her. I told myself that everything would return to normal after Eugene left the country, but I never imagined the situation would escalate like this.

It took me a long time to finally stand up from where I was sitting limply. After taking care of my mother's body, I went in search of Rina, who was still having fun at the party. All I wanted to do was leave the island to give my mother a proper burial so that she may rest in peace.

However, many people kept pointing their phone cameras at me while I was on my way to find Rina. They were taking pictures of me and whispering amongst themselves. I was initially unperturbed until one of them suddenly stepped forward to stop me. That person pushed his phone to my face.

"Hey, how much was your mother paid for her life? I'd like to make some money from Rina Shaker like how your mother did."

I was taken aback, and I grabbed the phone from that man, only to see Eugene's friends had posted a video of what happened online.

The comments were filled with angry and vulgar words.

[Isn't that old hag a swimming champion? Why can't she even handle swimming several meters in the sea?]

[Makes one wonder how she cheated during her glory days, doesn't it?]

[I'd cry my heart out if I were Rina Shaker. She's pretty unlucky to have a mother-in-law who's penniless and difficult to handle. Even her fiancé is leeching off her money. They're afraid they can't handle a rich daughter-in-law, so they're putting on a show to put her in her place.]

Rina was so enraged that she could not utter a single word. She turned away and suddenly saw me, and her anger subsided right away. Rina's expression softened as she came over to me gingerly with tears in her eyes. "You're finally willing to see me, Micah. It's been days since I've slept. I can't stop thinking about you, but I can't figure out the perfect way to compensate you."I glanced at Rina and smiled. "Compensate me? I've figured out what you can do for me. It just depends on whether you can accept my suggestion."Rina was overjoyed, and she kept nodding in agreement. "I'll do anything as long as you can forgive me.I replied with a smile, "I'll report this to the police, and I hope you can pay the price for what you did."Rina turned pale. She tried to say something, but nothing came out of her mouth.Eugene burst out laughing when he heard what I said. "Do you have any evidence before spouting your nonsense here, Micah? Rina's parents aren't people you can afford to offen

I wiped away my tears and turned to leave. Rina followed behind me, and soon caught up to me. She wanted to reach out to touch me, but she lacked the courage to do so. Rina called out timidly to me, "Micah…" However, I kept my mouth shut and did not respond.Rina sounded like she was about to cry, and she got a little anxious. "Please talk to me, Micah." She pulled on my hand to beg me not to leave. "Don't blame yourself for this. This is all my fault. I was the one who killed your mother. I'll make amends to her right now. I'll get her the best urn and a cemetery plot with the best view."I flung away her hand, tugging on my sleeve, but she grabbed on tightly. I no longer cared if I hurt her, and I pushed her away with more force. Rina stumbled and fell to the ground, grunting with pain. Despite always being dainty, she did not complain at all about her fall this time. She quickly got up off the ground, afraid that she would lose sight of me. Rina sobbed, "Please talk to me, Mic

"We went to the boat at the harbor after receiving the surveillance footage from you, but we found out that the woman isn't Mr. Sanders' mother. They just looked similar because that woman imitated how Mr. Sanders' mother dressed."Also, the footage was not taken on the alleged day, but was recorded two days later, with the timestamp edited with some sort of software. According to the real footage, the woman did not move at all after you left. "We hired experts to analyze it, and it does seem that she had died."Rina held her breath at this. "What do you mean? Are you telling me she died at sea?" "Yes, Miss Shaker."Rina laughed bleakly at the reply. "I don't believe you. You're pretty sub-par for a private investigator, doing such a shabby job. You can't even find out the truth, so you’re making things up by creating ridiculous stories.""Miss Shaker, we never lie to our clients…"Before the private investigator could finish, Rina hung up on him right away. She tried to stand

I could not stop trembling as I tried my best to cover my ears to stop myself from hearing the strays tearing up my mother's corpse, but the sounds were imprinted into my brain and refused to go away. I knelt and kept banging my head against the ground while I begged, "Please! Let my mom go!"Just come after me if you hate me. Stop torturing her! She's dead! Let me bury her and give her peace. Please!"Rina stopped playing with her nails when she saw how I was acting. "When did you take acting lessons, Micah? I almost feel touched by your performance. People might really be convinced that I killed your mother."If you insist on continuing this act, then fine, I'll play along to the very end. Do you think there aren't any surveillance cameras at the harbors? I'll get my men to retrieve the surveillance footage right now and show you the evidence of your mother being still alive."She took out her phone and made a few calls. "Hello, get me the surveillance footage of the day I was at

I ran over to the coffin in great distress, and I was close to breaking down with what I saw. All Rina did was glance down at the coffin and smile with disdain as she said, "It does look real, doesn't it? That fake body is pretty realistic."The coffin was smashed open, and my mother's body fell out of it. As her body was dressed up, one could only vaguely see her gray hair, her face with her tightly shut eyes. Fortunately, the weather was cold, and even though she was not cremated, her body did not rot as rapidly.I pushed the bodyguards aside without hesitation and ran downstairs. There was only one thought on my mind, which was hoping that my mother's body was in one piece. My mother always had a low tolerance for pain, and I kept thinking about how much she must be hurting from falling from such a high building. It did not matter to me that everyone threw me strange glances when I hugged my mother's body and pushed her hair away from her face. I kept muttering, "I'm so sorry,

I pushed the man in front of me away and went around madly, trying to find Eugene."Why did you let your friends slander my mother like that online, Eugene? It's fine if you target me, but what did my mother do to deserve such defamation after her death?"Eugene slammed his legs on the table haughtily and replied with indifference, "Well, it was your dirty scheme, wasn't it? Don't you have the guts to admit to what you're attempting to do? "You should count yourself lucky that Rina loves you. We're her friends, and it's our duty to help her make sure she finds the right man. You're just a penniless loser, after all. How can we be sure that you don't have an ulterior motive in being with her?"The glass in my hand cracked, and blood seeped through my fingers, but I could not feel the pain. I wanted to say more, but Rina stopped me. "That's enough, Micah. Stop making a fuss over this. Eugene is just concerned for my well-being."We'll be getting married anyway, and I'm just postpon
